According to the wct National team lists, it is Fanset, Allen, Pat , Tim.
No entry liste d for Epping or Kean but only 17 teams listed.

Fanset is curling with Allen at the National. Source says it is probably a short term solution unless they do well at the slam. Fanset, Janssen, and March are expecting to stay together and will find a new Skip/Vice for next season.

This team might need 2 years together before they are serious contenders to get to the Brier.

Nothing, aside from Junior Mixed haha. Played on some talented teams in juniors, but struggled in Regions.

To be honest having a poor junior career just made me put more work into my game. I know it's cliche, but you do really learn more when you lose than when you win.

From the looks of this forum I have something to prove, I'm very competitive so bring it on haha.

Chad came to the guys with sponsorship to go to The National and John would not be allowed as anyone from a team on the invite list cannot play.

Junior success means very little in Men's. Glenn Howard didn't win Ontario Juniors and he's still managed to do 'okay' in Men's as a skip.

As for the rest, I don't think you have anything to prove to someone who hides behind Unregistered posts...

Out of curiosity, does that rule for John only apply to the original invite list? aka top 18 teams in OOM
I know invites went out a while ago, but the current #40 team has accepted an invite (Morozumi), Tuck is #48 and there is still one spot not filled. So if they got to inviting Tuck would that effect Chad's eligibility to play with them?

That's a pretty astute observation, but given that they're that far down the list, I'm not sure they would split hairs over it. They'll likely just be happy to fill the Slam.

Only the original Top 18 are restricted from sparing for other teams.

a new photo surfaced with Epping playing with the rest of Mark Kean's team from this season. Could be another solid contender.

Nothing official as of this yet. Talked to John today and he's considering it, along with some other opportunities. Considering all options, including out of province opportunities.

If Jon moves out of province the number of elite level skips in Ontario gets that much shallower... especially once Glen retires if not this year then very soon.

re Elite skips

Elite skips/teams are by definition a rare commodity.

I would place John Morris in that category so that gives BC one.

Alberta has Martin and Koe and that makes two.

Saskatchewan.......there is the most potential there in many years but if we are talking about elite skips there are none.

Manitoba has McEwen and Stoughton. Then a lot of good teams, e.g. Rob Fowler, but none that have achieved elite status.

Ontario has Glenn and Epping has won a Grand Slam and did qualify in the top six for the Trials and so he just sneaks in to elite status I'd say.

North Ontario has Jacobs.

Quebec has none. Team Menard have shown that they are a very good team, elite no.

Out east there is Gushue and no one else.

So yes if Ontario lost both its elite skips that would make a significant difference. But then so too would it make a major difference to all the other provinces. Imagine NO without Jacobs, Nfld without Gushue or BC without Morris.

Yes Manitoba and Alberta have good teams to move up. But then so too does Ontario. No province had more teams in the pre-trials.

I think Virtue could definitely become an elite skip.

I think this point is very arguable (especially if you're just talking about skips, and especially if you're including Gushue in your list).

Just this past week Mnard went 4-2 against the top 3 teams at the Brier - all teams you've included as elite (and with one of those losses being the meaningless bronze medal game). And he will always have that Brier win from 2006 - which he earned fair and square against the best.

The team itself may be just a step below 'elite', but I believe it's only because they choose not to play as much as the top teams. And I honestly think JM is flat out as good a shooter as any player out there, as an individual. I personally would consider him to be elite, although as I say it is arguable.

It's at least safe to say that JM Mnard is the best skip not playing regularly in the Grand Slam events or travelling regularly for WCT events (only 4 events plus playdowns and pre-trials, and they're still ranked #20 in the world). And even without that full commitment, their team has proven they can step in with the best on a given week and be a factor. Koe only beat them in a extra end in the semis (before destroying Morris in the final), so really they weren't that far from winning the whole thing again.

In any case, just making the argument. I thought he was being dismissed a little too quickly after the week they just had.

I don't know. I think it would be smarter for him to stick with the team he's got now. The team he has now could very well be the next great team from Saskatchewan with really only laycock to challenge them. They didn't even play all that great curing Saskatchewan provincials and they still got to the final

If he goes back to alberta he has to deal with 4 or 5 teams in his way and curl with a kevin martin who has , with the exception of the Olympic trials looked average at best for the last 2 seasons.

re Team Menard

My mother's family came to Quebec in 1652. Both her parents emigrated to Saskatchewan where she was born, then she moved back and raised her family there. Making me a 15th generation Quebecer.

I also learned to read and write in French before doing so in English. And didn't move to Ontario until I was in my late 20's.

All this to say that I have a great deal of affection for Quebec, it's culture, including its athletes. To me it will always be home. And for sure it is arguable to say that any skip who has won a Brier qualifies. I don't think that is enough despite my bias but some would.

As to Gushue he's got an Olympic gold, the biggest prize in curling. He's got a Grand Slam, and he's got a zillion Brier appearances. And then there are his CTRS points and WCT money standing. So while it's still of course arguable, I lump for the 'Yes' side of the question with Team Gushue.

I'm in agreement about the 2010 The National won by Gushue, but Brad Gushue was not the skip of the Olympic Gold Medal winning team. Russ Howard was, and I think that is a very important distinction. I also don't give much weight to his Brier appearances, as he has not faced a major threat during his many years in NFLD.

For this reason I personally lump Gushue in with the other current skips who have won only one Major event (Gushue, Epping, Mnard, [others?]). Perhaps they could all be left out of 'elite', I personally would put them all in elite just barely.

Thanks for your response - very interesting to hear of your heritage!
