World Cup III

I just want to call out to Kadriana Sahaidak and Colton Lott who are representing Canada (and Manitoba) In Mixed Doubles in Sweden on this leg of the World Cup of Curling.

Sahadaik and Lott were runners up in the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championships last April (Lost to Walker/Myers) and were runners up in the CanadInns Mixed Doubles Classic last November (lost to Lawes/Morris). They are young, and students of the game. Their win in the first round was NOT a shocker! These two could win it all.

Further to this event - which I'm not sure of how it all compiles - but I was surprised to see that Darcy Robertson team is representing Canada. That is a very quick turnaround from the Manitoba Scotties where they got the Bronze. I wonder if this trip was on their mind when they played Einarson in the semi on Sunday morning.

Dunstone is the Men's rep. Again, some MB curlers there. Is that planned?

Sahaidak/Lott just downed Noreen/Noreen and are bound toward qualifying in their division. Toppling. They won't be in the lesser-known column for very long.

Is Darcy really the best team Curl Canada could have selected for this event? Let's start sending our younger teams not a senior team that has never really won anything.

I have to agree...not the best selection. What about Sarah Daniels? Or on the Senior side, Sherry Anderson?

Darcy Robertson is a three time provincial champion and Canadian junior champion. This year they also took the Icebreaker at The Granite and Colonial Square Ladies Classic. The last Canadian women's team sent for the was a younger team (Fleury) that I believe didn't go too far. Plus, Robertson went into this with little to no layoff since their last time out in the provincials.

Robertson would have been a good pick if it was better timing. Can you imagine how hard it was to fight all week at the provincials only to lose in the semis, then have to travel halfway around the world about 7 time zones away and expect to perform. It would have been better to pick a team farther down the CTRS list with more rest. For example team Birt had won their provincials 3 weeks ago. Great experience if they went.

The South Korean women’s team, all of whom are only 19 years old, have just romped through the whole field and then beaten Anna Hasselborg in the gold medal match.

Depth of field

Not sure what this event says about the depth of curling talent in each country. Sweden sent Edin and Hasselborg to all three events (winning none). Korea sent the same womens team (winning the last one). Switzerland sent Perret and Rios to all three mixed doubles (winning none). The other countries managed to vary it up a bit I believe.

After Edin the next ranked Swedish team is 86th. After Hasselborg its Wrana in 17th (surprised they wouldn't have been allowed a try).

So Homan gets to play Korea, Japan and China in the finals (wonder if she will still be playing in early May when the event is in China).

I get that this is a world cup kind of thing, like football or tennis. So, does the WCF decide who plays, and if not, and it is the countries' sports governing bodies who decide, is that the same as other sports who stage world cup events?

EDIT: here is what the Curling World Cup says about qualification. Fine: "Qualification
For the first three legs of the Curling World Cup, the host Member Association for each event will receive places. Then, the world rankings will be used to qualify the highest ranked Member Associations from each of the Americas, European and Pacific-Asia zones.
Another two teams, for each discipline, will be selected by the World Curling Federation Board, based on broadcast interest, marketing potential and/or promotional opportunities.
This process decides the teams for all three legs and Member Associations can choose to send the same athletes to each event, or have different athletes compete."
How does this compare to Football World Cup, or Tennis World Cup, or Athletics World Cup?

world cup football

Kind of hard to compare. The Club world cup is probably closer. For that the champions of Europe and South America (the strongest) get a bye to the semi-finals. The other four confederations get to quarter finals. The teams are based on where they play so that although a team like Man Utd. may be in the final they probably have only a couple of English payers on the field.

At the base level for example in Europe, there will be four English, Spanish, German and Italian teams in the play downs based on the previous seasons results. Less from other countries leagues based on a points system.

The world cup is one team per nation and is put together from the best players from any team who qualify under residency rules. Any country can enter (in fact more countries enter the world cup than the Olympics, sometimes because the FIFA definition of a country is a little relaxed). They qualify out of a playoff that is different in each part of the world to get to the 32 team finals every four years.

Finals

Just read the rules about qualification. Apparently apart from the three winners plus host China there will also be included the current world champion (I presume from 2019) and one special invite team (like the current olympic champion).

Looks like Hasselborg will get to the finals despite having tried three times and failed to qualify. Not sure about Edin but with Shuster already there he may get an invite anyway.

They need to amend this rule so that one team can go to one event only. It's an unfair advantage for Sweden to have their top teams reaping points in multiple events, where Canada sends 3 different teams. Hasselborg got almost 90 points for 3 kicks at the can. Edin over 100. This has a direct affect on them getting invites to the slams based on their world ranking. And now a 4th!!!

FYI without the padded points, Edin would be borderline top 10.

Just did the math. If you count only his first world cup event in China he earned 25.2282. Now if he's not eligible to play the extra 2 events he forfeits 83.2525.

This lowers his ytd from 354.921 to 271.6685

So instead of ytd 3rd in the world he drops to 11th. HUGE difference for slams that only invite top 10.

OMG @Gerry, the horizontal scrolling photo on the home page banner series has a text bar obliterating Kadriana Sahaidak's face. It is horrible! Please scale the photo and re post it to the scroll. These are sometimes up for weeks. She deserves more as a 19 year old World Cup Champion. Please. Thanks.
THANKS Gerry and/or team. U Rock.

If Sweden is dependent on only two teams to represent them for curling, that does not bode well for the future of the sport in that country. The world cup was a good opportunity to send their other teams to compete.

We are lucky in Canada that we have a number of teams we can choose. Great opportunity for Dunstone. I don't think Darcy Robertson's selection was very well thought out. Of course the timing for this event wasn't the greatest for the women either.
