Mixed Doubles Playdowns

So, it is a big field - four pools of eight and they are past the half-way point. There are familiar names on most of the undefeated teams and a couple of others in contention. Bool D has both Jones and McEwen at 2-1, so despite their loss, they are in the mix in their pool. Lawes also is not undefeated.

This first Olympic medal is a great big incentive. I feel it is a specialist game, and a game of youth, but I will stand corrected if a vet wins Canada. I also think that the Europeans are ahead of us in development but well, as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating... unless you botch your idioms.

i noted in the mens world thread that there's a scheduling conflict with the mixed worlds and champions trophy again so chances are really high that, unless a team involving 2 players without that commitment win the winner wont be going again. i dont get why the events cant be placed so there is no overlap.

I have to agree. It is important that Canada finish well to qualify for the Olympics.

Any reason why the players couldn't be scheduled at another date? Although the schedule is pretty tight.

Looks like Madam Rachel has picked up where she left off - ripping out throats and leaving carcasses strewn over the hiway!

Her & Johnny Mo are formidable competitors. Nobody seems to be able to handle them. Thought Lawes & Fry would be formidable but the wheels have fallen off evidently.

Just hope Fry didn't try pranking Kaitlyn!

Jones & Laing (the husband/wife team) don't seem to be faring all that well.

My prediction - Homan/Morris vs. Courtney/Carruthers in the final. Just don't know if Joanne can stand up to Rachel in the intricacy dept. - PLUS Rachel's machine-like takeout precision!

I think Birchard/Gunner will give Homan/Morris a good run.
Both undefeated. On the ice now.

Anyone know when/Where the Oly Qualifiers for Cdn MxDbls takes place? Are they going for the same place that hosted the Seniors? Seems I saw a story about that - good volunteer base. Remind me someone.

I've been told they're not going to announce a Trials until they know Canada has qualified for the Olympics, so we'll likely know where and dates sometime in May. The dates will also be sometime in mid-January as well.

OIC. So then it will depend on the results of this year's world championships. That makes sense. I wonder how many teams are in the Olys. And I see the 2017 Worlds are in Lethbridge. 40 Teams!!! 5 groups of 8. Almost all of the players have been announced - Canada is one of the last to declare its rep. April 22. That would be good event to attend to get a good feel for the strategy. I kind of liken Mixed Doubles to leg wrestling. If you know the secret, you win 90% of the time. If both teams know the secret it can be a train wreck. A test of wills. I think only a couple of Canadian teams know this secret, but there will be more at the international level.

fyi - here is the WCF link http://www.worldcurling.org/wmdcc2017/teams

whoa! Brazil has a team in it.

Back to our Nationals - Weagle/Epping vs Carey/Hodgson in this draw. among others. Two more draws tomorrow before they start Round of 12 (Top12). Single Knockout?

8 mixed doubles teams in the Olympic tournament next year (top 7 plus South Korea). So it makes it interesting as to where the federations' teams finish at this year's championships.

And as for Brazil... this is their third year sending a mixed doubles team.

Only 7! That puts a big burden on our champion to earn that berth. Wholly Mowly. How can Nationals have 36, Worlds have 40, and Olympics have 8? That seems really out of whack.

It's a question of time available. If they want to have full men's and women's tournaments, there are only a few days for mixed doubles to be squeezed in.

Now, if future hosts had more ice available...

So six teams have to go through a tie-breaker draw of six-end games to see who will secure the final position in the "round of 12" - which begins tonight. 4 teams go straight to the quarter finals, eight play tonight. Clearly the winner of the tiebreakers will be pooched as they enter the playoff games. Better than the alternative though. Neither CZ nor Curling.ca has the head to head for tiebreakers posted (yet). CBC is streaming games tonight and tomorrow. It is great to see the sport taking off.

The whole thing is dumb. You should not be allowed to enter unless you can represent your country should you win. Curling Canada is equally dumb to not allow our mixed Olympic rep (should we qualify) also be a member of the other curling teams. Really dumb. So if Homan wins the Roar...she and Morris can't enter or the mixed tourney next year. What a great advantage it would be to be on the ice playing mixed before the regular curling starts in Korea. It's not like playing a max of nine mixed games over five or six days would tucker anybody out.

From my count, 6 of the pairs in the Round of 12 are entered in the Champions Cup. With this year being vital to get a good enough placing to qualify for Korea, I hope this year isn't the same situation as last year. We need our best team in Lethbridge.

I guess some teams might not need points from the Champions (homan) and others will need the points from that event (morris). Or is there some "rule" that does not let the athletes decide which is more important to them.

im with people who hope the champions who win go but unless its one of these:

kasner/kalthoff
birchard/gunnlaugson
just/deis
virtue/thomas
baxter/dacey

or one of the teams coming through tiebreakers the winner likely wont be going. there's points and money available at the champions trophy

not likely any of the teams with members who will be playing in the champions trophy will skip that event for the mixed double worlds

I've thought about this a lot, off and on... and I think that the first suggestion there should be the whole situation. You should not be allowed to enter a national championship unless you commit to represent your country, should you win.

As to the rest... I don't know if it's just Curling Canada's rule that you can't be on more than one squad at the Olympics or not. (I can't find a rule one way or the other in my searches so far, and US Curling doesn't list a similar rule.)

Well - the final four are all tour vets. High profile curlers. Jones/Laing, Homan/Morris, Carey/Hodgson, and Courtney/Carruthers. Odds are getting slimmer and slimmer that we will be able to send our champion to the Worlds - and that means we might not be able to qualify for the olympics - although the curlers who were defeated today - are strong too. There is some injustice in this whole scenario. But - hopefully over the next couple of years (or olympic cycles) this will get straightened out. Chose your discipline, or let athletes compete in both disciplines. I think the games are being streamed today.

We should the world mixed doubles doesn't start until April 22. And they are in Canada so no long flights from the Player's.

no. the scheduling conflict isnt the players its the champions trophy

the mixed double worlds run from april 22-29

the champions trophy runs from april 25-30

you cant compete in both . odds are really high the champions wont be going

I forgot about that one! Sorry, I think if you qualify for mixed doubles, then you need to go for that one. The top teams have already qualified for the trials, they don't need to go to the Champions Cup.

You are correct with your other points, choose your competition or don't play in it if you can't represent Canada.

yeah but there is also the lure of money. and in morris's case i think (correct me if im wrong) and for all those teams fighting it out for that last trials spot valuable points. if there arent points there's still money and thats a strong lure. and , sadly as much as i hate to say it the champions trophy is a grand slam and i think a lot of teams and even fans would view winning a grand slam more prestigious than winning the mixed double world title. lets face it, this discipline is still struggling to be taken as a serious accomplishment.

i agree, i think if you sign up to a national championship then you should put that first and be prepared to rep your country and if you arent then dont enter. i said the same thing last year when peterman/gallant won and skipped the mixed worlds.

its why i think scheduling needs to be adjusted so nothing overlaps. its not that hard

It is that hard. The Sportsnet people have their own agenda and the WCF has theirs. Two completely different bodies. There could be many reasons why the they set their schedules the way they do, many of which we are not privy to ( Ice in late April/ may, previous contractual obligations , etc). Maybe someday it will be sorted out but if it was easy they would have done it already.

A quick glance at the line-ups for Champions Cup and the personnel on the Round of 12 at the Mixed Doubles Nationals indicates four teams who have no rep at the Champions cup.

Just/Dies is the highest ranked, having made it to the 8's straight out the round robin.
Kasner/Kalthoff also made it to the eights, but had to play in the round of playoffs
Baxter/Dacey (and Birchard/Gunnlaugson) also made the Round of 12 but were eliminated there.

So - Just/Dies from Fox Valley Saskatchewan may be our reps to worlds. They had a 6-1 record in the RR and lost to Carey/Hodgson in the eights.

Powers that be will let us know shortly, hopefully.
