I played hookie (OK, I really used a 1/2 day of vacation) and went to watch the 2 PM draw this afternoon.

The US men were looking good to blank the 7th and start the 8th down by one with the hammer but Heath's hammer must've stuck around (I didn't see the shot but noticed Plys slamming his broom down on the ice after the end). The Chinese skip made a nice double with the hammer in the 8th to score 2 and win.

The US women were in trouble in the 6th but the Chinese skip was heavy on her draw to sit 3 with her first stone and it was swept out the back. Nina then made a nice double and the end was then blanked. US made some nice freezes in the 7th to force China to 1 but just couldn't make the draws in the 8th to give them a chance for 2 to tie.

Hi Gonzo-glad you were able to attend-who are the commentators?

BTW-looking at the Continental Cup rosters, not only should the Americans be pissed (if you look at the new format, it's hardly a rink vs rink competition), but the folks in China, Japan and Korea (especially the Koreans who have been screwed six-ways-to-Sunday in this year's Worlds) are probably not feeling all that "warm & cuddly" right now!

Canada gets the last laugh.....Season of Champions will be showcased on ESPN3 (live streaming and short term archiving)

USCA...taking notes or does NBC have an iron grip?

Uh... I didn't check. But I wouldn't be surprised if one was John Benton since he is the director of curling operations at Four Seasons CC and was the curling analyst for NBC Sports for the 2014 Olympics.

NBC has an iron grip on anything organized or run by the USCA that is any sort of "Championship" or "Olympic Trial" which, courtesy of the fact that Olympics is a points gathering exercise now, could be argued to be any spiel in the US that has sufficient quality that we'd be interested in seeing it on TV...

This would be good, *IF* the folks at NBCSN would realize the gold mine they're sitting on...but...they don't seem to.

As good as Canadian curling is, when was the last time an American network dedicated all of it's resources to a sport in a foreign country when it's own version of the same sport was, maybe not struggling but trying to get better?

You're not going to see Heath, Pete, Craig, Alison, Erica or Debbie at that many Canadian spiels and even if they are entered, they probably won't get much TV time unless they make the finals...unless there's a clause in the agreement that stipulates "x" number of US games are broadcast.

BTW, ten points for the first NON-AMERICAN person who can fill in the last names of the folks I listed above.

I'll give it a go. Heath McCormack, Pete Fenson, Alison Pottinger, Erica Brown. Debbie McCormack. Don't recognize the name Craig at all.

If you are talking about the new ESPN agreement, you will never see American teams since it is the CCA Season of Champions. Last I checked, America is not a province of Canada.

if not the ESPN thing then nevermind

I can't imagine a curling event I would want to watch less, except maybe if they made the "Spirit of Curling" calendar into a tournament and televised it.

Well, I'm pretty sure that NBC is airing the English Premiere League these days... Isn't that rather analogous?

Something to point out...

ESPN3 isn't a "broadcast" presentation of anything, it's just a webstream under the ESPN logo and accessible off of the ESPN website.

ESPN doesn't produce the material, they use the feed from the broadcaster producing the event and shove it out onto the intrawebs. That's all. There's no ESPN personnel involvement beyond the web geeks that make sure the stream hits the app.

Some sports currently available on the ESPN3 feed, as of this moment, include Cricket (a hotbed of American interest...no...really...honest...), Cheerleading, rock climbing, Rugby, and wrestling.

This isn't "ESPN throwing it's resources behind the sport", it's ESPN telling TSN (who they already have a programming agreement with) "Sure, we'll throw this up on the net"
