Mixed Doubles

Glen Howard still has a shot at a Canadian curling championship, he is playing in the Canadian Mixed Doubles this week with his daughter. He appears to be the biggest name in the event...a few others as well including Adam Casey & Mark Kean.

Why on earth do we have mixed doubles? Do any clubs have mixed doubles leagues?

Mixed doubles is exactly what curling does NOT need. It gives even more arguments to those who say it is not a sport. It removes the only fitness part of the game (sweeping). Little team work or communication specially on take outs as the thrower can barely catch up to his own rock. When it is on TV with non-curlers are watching, you get to see a rock gliding down the sheets for ten seconds with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING happening. How exciting...It will bring ZERO new curlers to your club.

Barefoot curling or the return of the kilt and strawbroom for mens competitions would do more for the game then mixed doubles. And I wonder if I am being sarcastic.

I've always considered Mixed Doubles as a way to get the smaller "Tier 2" nations some international exposure=nothing more.

I felt the same way about mixed doubles until I actually played it: It's fast, it's fun, and remarkably strategic. The whole end changes based on where the opening freeze lands. There's a huge difference between a) 6 inches light, b) frozen, or c) a 6 inch bump.

Bonus: defence is really hard...so anyone who was bored with a few blanks ends to start the Brier final will be relieved. A four point lead is not safe.

Seriously: grab three friends, mixed or otherwise, and go play 6 ends with a round of drinks on the line. You'll change your mind.

I agree with CurlingGeek - my club has hosted a mixed doubles funspiel for the last two years. Can't say it's the most popular event of the season, but it's a blast. Games are fast, both players get the opportunity to call shots, and it's amazing how easily the score can change.

Sure it's different, but I certainly wouldn't say it's a losing proposition...no different from the various golfing formats you see at the Ryder Cup.

Why?

In some parts of the world, mixed doubles is the most popular form of the game. And there's a world championship coming up.

We can't very well let that happen without a Canadian representative, can we? And how do we choose our rep? We play for it.

That's why.

Mixed doubles is fun to play. They just haven't found a way to make it a good television show.

Perhaps remove the requirement for someone to be in the house to hold the broom. That would get sweeping back in the game and reduce the amount of time we all helplessly watch the rock slide down the ice.

Championship Sunday at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials. The format is pretty simple: win three times and go to Sochi, lose once: go home.

The 8 qualifiers are:

Ice 1 : QF 1
Howard & Howard
Abbis-Mills & Bobbie

Ice 2 : QF 2
Kidd & Kidd
Murphy & Murphy

Ice 4 : QF 3
Forward & Jeffrey
Kreviazuk & Mathers

Ice ? : QF 4
Janssen & Grandy
Park & Thomas

Lots of provincial finalists and champions on that list.

First games start at 9:30am eastern. I've been told we've got a volunteer to share the morning games on CurlingGeek, but that has not yet been confirmed. The games will be shown here if at all possible:

So far, the only reasons that were put forward in favor of having mixed doubles is that it is fast and fun. Well then, let's have a barefoot short game World Championships. It is also fun and fast.

The other reason put forward was that it was VERY popular in some part of the world. Like where? Could you supply a link to their popular National Championship?

What's the reason for normal curling? If enough people want to play mixed doubles I don't see why you wouldn't have a world championship for it. My preference is that it not become an Olympic event, but what's the harm in a Worlds? You don't have to watch it.

the world plays mixed doubles

2014 World Mixed Doubles Championship included teams from the following countries:

Australia, Austria, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Latvia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain,
USA, and Wales.

Switzerland beat Sweden in the final. Spain beat Hungary for the bronze. Canada failed to reach the quarterfinals, losing to Austria.

more details here:
http://wmdcc2014.curlingevents.com/

Of course we could always say, "Let those other 33 countries play mixed doubles. We're too good for it. And besides, a couple of guys on an internet forum don't like it."
