Jennifer Jones Loves to Curl - heading to Siberia

Here's a link from Winnipeg Sun's Jason Bell covering this event to start next week in Siberia. Jones is one of 8 rinks (the only Canadian team btw) participating for a $100,000 purse. Note: 1 significant spelling/name error in the article. See if you can spot it.

Reba's Daughter?

Russia was good to Jennifer Jones once before, so a return trip now makes perfect sense.

But this time it’s Siberia, not balmy Sochi.

Indeed, temperatures will be well-below freezing and snow will likely be falling when Jones and her Winnipeg teammates curl on the May long weekend in an eight-team women’s event in Russia.

The reigning Olympic champions, who won gold in 2014 in Sochi, will compete at a brand-new facility in Dudinka, one of the world’s most northerly towns, deep within the Arctic Circle.

Aptly named the Arctic Cup 2017, the bonspiel has US$100,000 in prize money on the line.

"We received an invitation in February and it seemed like a really neat opportunity and a chance to help grow curling in different parts of the world, which is exciting," Jones said Thursday. "It was the lure of the adventure for our team, and the chance to play some of the top teams in the world.

"It's an opportunity to go back to Russia where, obviously, amazing things and dreams did come true for us."

The veteran skip, third Kaitlyn Lawes, second Jill Officer and lead Dawn McIntyre are the only Canadians in the event.

Anna Sidorova of Russia (who lost the world women's final to Canada’s Rachel Homan in late March), Sweden's Margaretha Sigfridsson (who fell to Jones in the Olympic final) and United States' Nina Roth of Blaine, Minn., will be in the hunt. There's also another team from Russia, as well as squads from Denmark, Finland and Norway in the competition.

Jones leaves Monday and, after stops in Toronto and Frankfurt, reaches Moscow late Tuesday. The next day, the team takes a four-hour flight north to frigid, isolated Norilsk and then has a 90-minute drive to Dudinka, a mining town on the banks of the Yenisei River.

"We all thought that heading into an Olympic trials year it would be good to go and do something fun together, practise some things and then take that time off in June and July and get ready for the trials," Jones said.

The team has already qualified for the nine-team Roar of the Rings national women Olympic trials, set for Ottawa in December.

"Playing in a different environment is always a good way to challenge yourself," she said. "When you go to the Olympics, it’s unique and there are obstacles that come up, so the more you go through as a team, the more you’re prepared."

Sochi, set on the Black Sea at the southern-most tip of Russia, had the warmest average climate of any Winter Olympics city in history. The highest temperature recorded during the Games was 20 C.

The Jones quartet could experience full-blown winter next week — and about 21 hours of daylight.

"This is not really a tourist destination, for sure," she said, laughing. "In Sochi, we saw palm trees. It was more of a beach destination for Russians. This is pretty much the opposite, but it will be fascinating, even to just see the landscape and meet the people.

"Then we overnight in Moscow on the way back and they’re going to tour us around the Kremlin and Red Square. We didn’t see Moscow the last time, so it’ll be exciting."

Jones, the 2008 world women’s champion, five-time Canadian champion and seven-time Manitoba Scotties winner, said she and her teammates have toured the planet — all because of curling.

"We’ve been to Korea and Beijing and Thailand and Japan, all of Scandinavia, so many countries in Europe, and the United States. Who’d have thought we’d curl in Las Vegas? We all love to travel, so it’s changed our lives. We’ve really tried to go into each place and appreciate the culture. It’s been great."

That's copyright infringement. You can paste snippets of an article, but it's illegal to post the whole thing.

He did it anyways, but it should be taken down. Any basic forum knows you can't do that.

he can actually take a couple of words out and the one that is spelled wrong "practise" and it would not be an infringement, change the heading, etc.

I have read it - it can be taken down.

Taking two words out and changing the heading does not stop infringement. If you reproduce a substantial portion of the article, it's infringement. Posting the whole article except for two words is substantial. Posting a paragraph, and a link to the original article, is appropriate. Sometimes people want to be paid for their work. I think that's fair. You can't just post an entire book, but change one line and think it's okay. If you can't/don't want to pay for something, that doesn't make it okay to take it for free.

Doesn't much matter - got the article read. All this other stuff has nothing to do with curling, it has too do with the Free Press being to cheap to let you look at their paper, unlike some other's you can look at free.

Let's hope Team Jones is ready for tricky ice this time, unlike the provincials. Unless the event is bringing in Jamie or Hans.

Is this an official event, cause it says it's on the tour, yet it's not on the actual tour calendar.

Well it really shouldn't matter for Team Jones. The Olympic Trials should be their last stand - and I don't think any tour points would carry over for just 2 members - should Kaitlyn & Dawn decide to forge on after 2018.

It could matter slightly for the Russian teams (2) but since when do the Russians use points to decide who goes where?

Outside shot Jones does not get herself slaughtered (by Homan) in the Trials - wins the spot, does well at the Olympics (medals) and decides to carry on for another cycle - where JJ would be 47/48 at the end of the cycle. If Jones can still muster up a consistent 78 to 84% game she'd still have a 3rd coming into her own at around 33 - might have to replace Jilly at 2nd, perhaps even Dawn at lead but there is a scenario where Jennifer Jones continues to compete at the highest levels post-2018.

1. She wins Olympic Trials
2. She can find replacements for Dawn & Jill
3. Kaitlyn decides to stay with her
4. She does well at the next Olympics
5. No injuries or health concerns

Why do you go off on a tangent about team Jones instead of giving a proper answer.

Because he is deeply in love with JJ - you should have been on this forum the day she won Olympic gold..Gerry had to rent another server.

Tru dat!

But you can't call me a lemming, can u?

Biggest fan? OK

But also her most severe critic, too!

Remember how apoplectic I became when she fed Eve Muirhead that wonderful set-up shot - that wasn't there prior to JJ throwing her 2nd last stone?

As history records - Muirhead immediately performed a precise hit & roll triple to lie shot buried in full 4; remember Joanie McCusker yelping "there's no quit in Eve Muirhead" - and then Jones grimly walked down the ice and put 'er on the button to advance to the gold medal game!

Jones has won her first 2 matches - thus pretty much confirming a playoff position (Top 2 from each group advance)

No problem in either of first two games - Note: Margie Sifridson's squad had Bella Wrana tossing 4th stones; Wrana is either 3rd, 4th or 5th best skip in Sweden. Wonder if Siggy is putting a kaybosh on this year's experiment and who she'll bring in to throw last bricks next season. The top Swedish team is absent from this affair.

Jones, now sailing along will get stiffer resistance with her cross-over opponent; either Smiley Sidorova or Alina "Ladyhawke" Paetz.

Jones should have enough firepower to subdue the moody Russian skip - she'll have her hands full (like she usually does) when Ladyhawke confronts her in the expected final.

JJ Makes Playoffs at Arctic Cup

Managed to squeeze by Victoria Moisseiva, the anti-Sidorova. Mind you, JJ needed to score a deuce on the final end - then steal in the extra to take the duke. Prolly qualified for the playoffs regardless - so the game was just for position - and JJ couldn't certify her spot because the other group had one draw to go.

While its obvious JJ isn't the JJ of old - she's still tenacious & full of NO QUIT. . . . . maybe moreso than when she was arguably the best female curler on the planet!

But teams, even young Moisseva's squad now have the book on toppling Jones. Basically, its using JJ's hyper-aggression against her. Wait for somewhere in the middle ends (ie. 3, 4 or 5) and when it appears Jones is playing aggressive but doesn't have command of ice and weight - THATS THE TIME TO MAKE YOUR PLAY. The Russians know the book - perhaps just can't execute it - YET.

The one team at this event who has the book on Jones down pat - and CAN EXECUTE is Alina "Ladyhawke" Paetz. She did it 3 times at the worlds a few years back (when Jones was at her best) and when Paetz is on her game she is fully capable of toppling Jones.

So unless Jones wants to catch an early flight - and get out of Dodge early she'll probably end up playing Paetz in the final. I'd favour Paetz by around 55% if that game materializes.
