Rocking the Stack!!!! WHAT???

I must admit that the concept of "Rocking the Stack" is new to me. I heard of it yesterday when listening to Randy "Satch" Dutiaume being interviewed on the sudden passing of former teammate Dave Elias the day before.
The interview with Dutiaume is worth listening to. He pays great tribute to Elias but opens the door to some aspects of curling even I was not aware of.

I'll pass the link on here for CJOB's audio vault - the interview with Satch starts at approx. 6:14pm on June 6, the interviewer is Jim Toth.

Somewhere in the interview, perhaps towards the middle or just further Dutiaume talks about the concept of Rocking the Stack and how Elias spotted it. Essentially, Randy accuses Jeff Stoughton's player of cheating. Listen for yourselves.

I think it was meant to be more of an intimidation tactic vs. out and out cheating. Perhaps more like poor sportsmanship, and in violation of the "gentleman" nature of curling.

Certainly not surprising, but would one of you explain what rocking the stack actually is?

During pre-game practice Dutiaume alleges that Stoughton's man, Garry Vanderberghe was either tossing heavyweight takeouts or allowing heavily tossed rocks to hit the other teams stack of 8 rocks which are parked in their normal position. Evidently, as alleged by Dutiaume, by "Rocking the Stack" can cause some form of damage that disables the rocks from performing at their optimum. Thats how I read it, maybe Randy can come on to explain further.

Talking

So its curlings equivalent of waiting for the other team to leave the ice and then shoot pucks into their net?

Wouldn't damage the stones but it is rude. The obvious solution would be to stay on the ice and protect your stack. Thus standing up to an idiots attempt to intimidate.

That's a very good analogy.

I think there's a belief (or myth perhaps) that rocking the stack can cause minor damage, irregularities or somesuch to the opponents rocks, or at least the perception of such could possibly affect performance......

So even if no damage is done, still a rude gesture.

There are some who would call it 'gamesmanship' and part of sport.

However, I'm inclined to agree with your comment. It's a bullying tactic used by cowards insecure about their own ability to play better and beat their opponents fairly.

So having rocks hit each other will cause damage to them? How do they protect the rocks during the game? You do realize that rocks hit each other throughout practice and games all the time right? What an asinine thing to say that it would damage the rocks.

Show some respect.

If anyone ever did that on my ice would kick them out of my rink. Period. Would do more damage to the ice than the rocks.

Yup. I would have punted Stoughtons team in a heartbeat. They would have never done that, so its a moot point.
