Seriously legend, don't go into 'poor me' mode. You insult more people per year than all the other posts on CZ with your insulting nicknames and continued misogynistic and sexist comments about women curlers. And you often do it in a single post. You're just pissed that I zinged you before you could turn this into another JJ thread. 😎

Suggesting Cohn is a poor choice. Another non-curler who understands nothing about the sport is idiotic. Stemlaw's comments about not understanding curling culture and then making almost no effort to educate himself put him at loggerheads constantly. And with the exception of a few good financial moves he did, IMO, very little for the sport.

The best person is someone who is well rounded, with success on and off the ice. Business acumen mixed with curling experience. It's not rocket science, it's common sense.

And no legend, I have no idea what Stemlaw or Hansen were paid. Nor, frankly, do I care.

Great quote about Bettman. When someone from the NBA was asked about Bettman's knowledge of hockey as he was about to take the NHL Commissioner position:

"If someone handed him a puck, he'd try to open it"

Don't know, never cared ... but WH may have had a bigger paycheque. WH did have a clause in his contract that made him bullet proof. Only WH could out WH. Likely reason why he stayed until now, at 72. Was said to be retiring after 2010 Olympic Winter Games ... didn't happen. Also at one time stated he'd retire after bringing a Brier to Toronto. Never happened on his watch.

Jamie thinks he walked on water. I have reservations. Befriended people when it was expedient for him to do so. Think of him as master puppeteer. Coveted control. Was anti players in 2001. Hands all over death of Brier's provincialism. Point being all legacies have pluses and minuses.

That's a big word legend. Careful you don't hurt yourself try this one out when pondering your next JJ lovefest; sycophant...

Of course Hansen has a bigger legacy. He's been here since the 70's dimwits! Along the way he's made good, mediocre, poor and horrid decisions (werenich at the '87 trials being the most vivid to mind).

Acolyte? No. Fan? No. But I am able to view clearly and without prejudice that he's done more good than bad for the game.

Looking back, he brought professionalism to the organization with his changes to its governance. Importantly, he also oversaw a return to financial stability. And he did not get torpedoed by Warren Hansen or the WCF (... undoubtedly no small feat).

Fresh eyes and a fresh mind going forward can perhaps best affect today's and tomorrow's issues, like ...

i. how can live attendance at major events be revitalized?
ii. how can curling get into everyday conversation and regrow/rekindle its media presence?
iii. how can the sport's participants today/tomorrow be convinced to compete?

It seems that there has become an ever narrowing focus on winning (gold) medals. The structure of funding and restructuring of events reflect this. But is this good for the overall health and underpinning passion of the sport, and its long term growth and development.

I think you raise some good points and could not agree more that Stremlaw did all that he was asked to do and far more; plus he exceeded his mandate - spectacularly.
It seems everyone has an opinion and seem to think holding such a role is easy, but the visionary leadership cannot rest with one person.
It appears the esteemed Board of Directors of the CCA has failed at a number of things as those are the people charged with the visionary aspects from a governance level in my view.

Not sure where that Board goes now, as they will be the ones hiring for Stremlaw, Hansen, and from what I have learned possibly other staff that are leaving sooner than later too.

I think Overandout is spot on that we as curlers underestimate how big a leadership role was provide for the past decade with fulfilling unprecedented results for the organization, which is what the most recent CEO was hired to do.

But, now its time for building the base of the pyramid. Time for grassroots. This must be heavily emphasised or troubles will be much larger than the CCA thinks as I do not have faith in the provincial level to get this done.

I agree 100%. Hansen was all about what he wanted, what he preferred and his way or else. He had a lot of people fooled for a very long time.

But, change can be good. So, let's move off this topic and see what happens with the hires. My guess is this will not be until the fall or winter given the timelines of that type of process.
Could be a good or bad Christmas for curling!

A person with solid business acumen balanced with a well-rounded curling background is what is needed. Someone who understands the curling related challenges to stop the downward trend and get people back in clubs.

The competitive game can take care of itself for a while. Time to start rebuilding the grass roots.

Fair enough jamcan.
I will not belabour this as I see there is a new thread which is far more appropriate to the topic, that being who will be the next CEO of the CCA. I think Over and out started it, so I will move my comments to there.
But, I firmly belive that history will dictate that Stremlaw was by far and away the best CEO the CCA has ever had and might be for some time.
It was not Parkes and it sure was not the gentlemen Parkes replaced, John M way back.

We all have opinions as people within the sport, but I stand by my feelings that the sport community in general and many of the CCA's suppliers and companies they do business with are passionate about how much Stremlaw gave to the CCA and that he forged a new pathway for the organzation through major personal efforts and his contacts.
Most things the guy has touched turn to gold in one form or another. In my province, he was with another organization here and literally built it up from not much and marketed it for kids in sport and persoanlly started porgrams for many young athletes who have gone on to be Olympians after he left here. It is quite impressive.

But, point well taken to move off of this and to focus on the future and who we have coming into curling.
I just learned last week that we have all been talking about grassroots as the priority. I agree.
Well, the news is that Stremlaw landed a large multi million dollar donor for grassroots and a develpment type system for the sport across the nation. I read the release and says the donor is annonymous, but that is awesome to hear and quite the legacy in my view before Stremlaw leaves. It says it is the largest donation ever in the sport, so I for one am really excited to learn how the CCA decides to spend these dollars, and hopefully wisely. They can't afford to squander this as obviously big efforts were made to get this donor or donors (I have no clue how many they are), into the system.
Congrats to the CCA on this one.

I will support any CEO that will stop supporting the Curling Canada Foundation's commercial about the kids and their career aspirations. "I don't know what I want to be!"
