Michelle Englot - Jennifer Jones

By now most realize Rachel Homan's win at the Olympic trials captapaults Michelle Englot to Team Canada status at the 2018 Scott Tournament of Hearts.

Englot is not in a bad position. Not only did Homan abdicate her throne for the Olympic quest - not having a shot-pelter like Homan at in Pentickton (new spelling, ode to Lisa Weagle) will give Englot a punchers chance.

This is a great accomplishment. Englot gave Homan all she could handle at last year's Scotties - tormenting Rachel with shot after shot - forcing Rachel to make a series of doubles, hits 'n rolls, etc. to salvage victory. In a word Englot was GREAT.

Now, she comes off a less than mediocre performance at the trials - where her inadequacies have been exposed for all to see. She's got a very shaky platform delivery - her shots are almost always in doubt and she played in the 65 to 73% percentile most of her games.

Her front end is still very good - although there's a tendency for Leslie or Raunora to take turns being the star while the other flounders. Kate Cameron is still trying to find her way - she's a great hitter - needs to get into the nuance game that Englot is famed for.

I suspect their main competition for gold will come from 3 provinces as usual - either Scheidegger or Sweeting will emerge from Alberta (outside chance for Kelcey Rocque), while in Manitoba the usual suspects = Barb Spencer, Kerri Einarson, Jennifer Jones, Brianne Meilleur, Shannon BIrchard. If Jones continues her spotty play at the Manitobas she'll be hard-pressed to win vs. most of these hungry wolves.

Ontario will feature a wide array of challengers led by Tippin, Harrison, Tracy Fleury, Middaugh. They are all capable teams. Krista McCarville should auto-berth out of Northern Ontario.

Plus some extra points-based teams in the new expanded format.

One suggestion for Englot - if Jennifer Jones doesn't win Manitoba I'd seriously consider bringing her on board as their 5th player - wouldn't expect Westcott or Wilson to go down but JJ could serve as a more than capable fill-in for either Michelle or Kate. If not Jones, certainly Kaitlyn Lawes.

On another matter I'd certainly endorse Rachel Homan loading her team with Jocelyn Peterman as 5th player - I believe the CCA (Curl Canada) has some say in this decision - or perhaps its the Canadian Olympic committee, need some clarification.

I'm one of the good guys now!
