As I prefer to give the benefit of doubt, I would assume that someone or some people did not it the first year when the list showed they were cut adn did nto make the team, so the HPP changed their policy after that point, which lead to this years situation. Based upon how they handled it, I guess they still dont have their technique quite ironed out yet.

I don't think they announced the participants last year either, and there are plenty of good reasons not to make it public. Where they've run into problems is walking the line between keeping the community aware and excited and not providing too much information.

One could make the argument that the first year they shouldn't have made the participant list public. It felt like they wanted to give recognition to the full group even if they didn't make the final cut. Once they realized that they aren't going to make public the full reasons for certain players being selected or not, they realized it's probably better to add privacy to the whole process.

Without any message from the USCA about the change in announcements, we are left to speculate, and in the current atmosphere selfish reasons on the part of the HPP are assumed. Of course, a message from the USCA would be viewed skeptically anyway, so it's a lose-lose situation.

Sorry, Grat. I appreciate that you're trying to see both sides of the problem. I've tried. I failed.

How many curlers participate in the combine? Dozens? Dozens and dozens?

Do you know what curlers talk about? Curling. They tend to go on and on.

Keeping the combine participants a secret is a fool's errand. It is far better to be transparent.

For those who offer the weak suggestion that "some players might not want their current team to know they trying out for the HPP"...very weak. Tell your teammates what you are doing. Any possible harm (slight) that will occur is nothing compared to once they find out from others (great). And don't be a teammate that keeps things from the team.

I might be sympathetic to those who believe that Junior curlers who went to the combine and were not selected face a little embarrassment. Still, we curlers face possible embarrassment every time we lace up our shoes. As we trend more and more towards professionalism, such sympathies are things of the past.

So: It's nearly impossible to keep it a secret AND keeping it a secret serves no real purpose. I find it hard to see the other side of the argument.

You're not unreasonable or close minded on this tuck. There is absolutely NO reason for any secrecy in what is a public process. And I call bull crap (cuz I'm certain the censoring software will x-out bull****. See? I was right) on any individual who tries to claim they were 'embarrassed' for not making the cut and thus requested their names not be published. That's the biggest pile of malarkey I think I've ever read here in 15 years-and that's taking Manitoba Legends usual steady stream of doggy-do into account.

And speaking of Legend, Gerry gets tons of complaints about his endless misogynistic and degrading comments about women plus his insulting nicknames. Does Gerry censor his posts? So I can only conclude that, for whatever reason, he turtled to the folks in charge of your HPP instead of telling them to pound sand.

As for your HPP folks, they most likely felt there would be a backlash when you Yanks saw who DIDN'T make the cut and wanted to hide that list rather than face a few tough questions. Classic move by politicians trying to protect their phoney-baloney jobs.
