The Scottish team are fulltime curlers paid by their association. No other jobs needed. Commentators made reference to Eve practicing 4 times a day.

I wasnt unaware scotland had gone to that kind of thing. I know china and russia do that but i didnt know they had

The other big difference is sponsorship. It is difficult to get a significant sponsor in the US when the "sponsor" is not shown on TV. Weed Man gets a bunch of coverage on TSN/CBC/Sportsnet that is unavailable in the US for Lawn Doctor.
Just the way of the world. Also, the US has 16,000 curlers nationwide. About 200 of those are at the competitive level. That is probably less than a single province.
So, for US teams to travel to good events in Canada/Europe a lot of that money is coming out of their pockets unless they are one of the 4 teams (men/women) supported by the USCA.
I worry about the future of US curling. Missing the Olympics for the men would be a really "bad" thing. No one wants to see the old days return when the Silver Broom was Canada, Scotland and the US. Could that happen, unknown. It all comes down to dollars and the Olympics. Ask the wrestling foundations. There is a reason golf is in the Olympics and it is not because they are great athletes.

Even if im right and teal Clark doesnt do enough to get the US in directly i really cant see them missing out completely. Every other decent team should get in directly with maybe the exception of switzerland. The biggest challenges in the pre-qualifying event could be switzerland and if they arent there germany, japan and france. Depending on who the US would then send over id favor them to get through that
Definately agree with you that no one wants the sport to go back to a 3 country race. However I think thats what its been for a while now. With the excetpion of 2007 when germany got silver and the US got bronze and then the last 2 years its been all about scotland, norway and canada.

2007 Worlds was extremely boring with a very low level of play from nearly all the times apart from a dominant and outstanding Howard. An old and past their best Kapp brothers team and a journeyman never to be heard from again U.S team there at the very end just tells all about the caliber of event it was. It made the final couple days a foregone conclusion to what would happen. I am sure Howard who was playing fabulously would have taken down anyone who stood before him anyway, but you still would have liked to see a real opponent for him towards the end.
If that is the alternative to a 3 team race, I will take the 3 team race with legitimate teams who play consistently well in Canada and abroad anyday. Anyway I disagree with you on the 3 team race. Sweden and Switzerland have always been major contenders the last 5 years since the forgettable 2007 Worlds.
So I would say there have always been atleast 5 contending teams.

Just went to the WCF site to check to see if the Oly Qualifying countries were listed.
Looks like China and Japan are OUT and Korea will be the sole Pacific Rim country at Sochi.
Is this correct? Are there any more events. If the list they have posted is correct, Germany is also OUT and Denmark is IN. Russia qualified on their own merit, and not just as Host nation.

Basically correct (except for the Russia comment, because technically, they couldn't qualify on their own merrit  ).
It came down to the last RR draw in Riga: Germany lost to Italy, the US won and China lost to Japan. By that, Korea kept ahead of Germany and China dropped out.
There will be an Olympic qualification event in December to determine the final two spots, with Germany, Italy, China, Japan, Czech Rep., Latvia and Norway. I talked to Tan Weidong in Riga, but even he didn't know the actual location or mode of competition of that event, it will be held somewhere in Europe. I heard different guesses from the German, Italian and Chinese teams, including Switzerland, Norway and Italy.

Great rebound for Rachel & crew. Although bronze wasn't the goal, it was a well played game right after the one they gave away. This team has a chance to be one of the all-time greats. They could have multiple Scotties before they hit 30 (except for Weagle). Can't wait for the trials and Sochi.
