We don't have great skipping at worlds or olympics. Haven't for years. All the programs in the world won't help unless they are working with great skips. Swapping skips around like we've seen in Jrs and here will not give us any better insights into which skips to back in the next cycle, and will only demoralize the skips we have. Great skipping is something that is only appreciated over time, and you can't determine greatness in a single game or two. You have to observe them within the system of a stable team and series of events to see any greatness that exists.

I hope these kids (Ethan and Aileen) will keep developing and building their teams and their skills for the future rather than worrying about the past. Cream always rises to the top once you stop stirring.

I gotta give it up for 45 exclamation points. That's impressive. Can't argue with those numbers. Only 40 and I might have questioned your sampling method . . . but 45? I'm out.

Now that I know you can count I hope can use that skill to understand who by far the minority is.

They say "I wish I made the HP program, I'll train harder this season" or "I wish I lived in MN so I could try out for the HP program, maybe I should work towards making time in my life" or "I worked my butt off and I'm proud to be in the HP program."

Reality is that competitive people like to compete. Only you ducks like to quack.

You got 1 out of 3 right. Of course the HP players are happy to be there... altho their comments about HP that I have heard are pretty guarded. Fact is most curlers just do not like the process. Does not mean USA curling should not be trying something different. Does not mean curlers do not support team USA. Just do not kid yourself into thinking that it is only those few posters who are not happy with the system.

Tomorrow ends Women's World. It will end without our USA team on the podium.

Our gals did OK. A close loss to Germany and then a weak finish against teams that were also struggling doomed us to finish in the bottom half. I had hopes for much better. With neither China nor Scotland playing particularly well, the field was not overly strong.

I am dying to hear from people that were there. We hear rumblings about illness sweeping through the team. That would help explain some of the seemingly bizarre lineup moves. Perhaps Becca skipping at the end was part of some longterm planning??? It is HARD to keep HPP and coaching discussions out of this thread and in the other (more venomous) thread because it seems to come into play for our nation much more than others.

Illness or healthy. Bad ice or good ice. Good coaching or unwanted interference. Whatever the circumstances may have been, I remain a fan. I hope to get another chance to cheer for these young ladies on the international stage.

I don't know how many saw all of the TSN casts. The ice issue was discussed several times and was more an issue with the building (no insulation) and the time of day (big temperature swings between day and night draws). In many folks' opinions Hans Wuthrich is the best in the business-he's "Manning the Sprinkler" in Sapporo.

As I've mentioned before, many Canadians share the concern about the performance of the U.S. at the international level. A strong U.S. presence is vital for the continued growth of the game-if for no other reason, big corporate $$$ and new sponsors are far more likely to be found on your side of the line.

If, indeed there was a case of "bad sushi" in the curlers' compound you would think that other rinks would have been affected too. The only obvious sickness was Vic Rauter-although Russ didn't sound like himself...he'd make a great coach for some rink/country but he's otherwise occupied.

In any event, let's keep personal references to the players out of this.

I still contend that a regular and serious practise/game schedule with the same personnel is the key to success.

Great finish to womens world. And another Swiss team making its first appearance at worlds wins the title -- 3 championships in 4 years, each with a different skip. They are doing something right in Switzerland. As their skip said after the game, they have lots of good teams in Switzerland and that makes them all better.

It's worth mentioning that the Swiss run a points system to determine their world teams that isn't entirely unlike what's been instituted in the U.S., with a few slight variations....one being that the national champion does go to worlds as long as they meet a minimum baseline of OOM points (35, I think).

How many OOM points do you get for winning the Swiss Curling Championship? 35?

25 Points for their Championships. But you have to have 35 points PRIOR to the Swiss Championships. Only a couple of USA teams accomplished that.

At least in the USA system, teams still have a chance of going to Worlds if the teams with points don't meet a minimum standard of finishing in 3rd place.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I personally have been rejected from the HP program, and what did it do? It lit a fire under my a** to try to make a team to beat them. Sure, it took away resources for me. But it made me do things I never have done before, such as playing in many more spiels than I have in the past, to better myself.

Yes, the program may seem overrated sometimes. Yes, it makes it more difficult for "just anybody" to compete. But if "just anybody" can compete, why would individuals invest countless hours and dollars to better themselves? To me, THAT is what the program is about. Pushing everyone, HP or non-HP, to be the best they possibly can, which is what we need.
