USOC and NGOs

USOC announced today the entire USA Gymnastics governing board must be replaced given USAG's failure to prevent decades of civil and criminal abuse of athletes. That failure is beyond despicable given for years USAG tried to prevent exposure by fighting in courts to keep its records closed about the many criminal coaches and other members they allowed to continue to have access to gymnasts by not terminating their USAG memberships.

Not to be missed:
http://officialmissval.com/times-up-usag/

Curling as a team sport attracting more adults than children and relying more on smarts than physical skills is less vulnerable to the kind of athlete abuse USA gymnastics has had.

However, I can't help today but remember listening to a former USCA board member about coaches and others who thought patting her butt regularly during games was OK, the many elite curlers who begged her to vote against the current HP system but who dared not complain in public for the very same fears our gymnasts had at the infamous Karolyi Ranch, or what she was told about what happened in Vancouver behind the scenes when the H P system fired up. Nor, can I forget our current HP program enables gender and age bias for Team USA, and hinders self-formed teams thus reducing the number of competitive curlers in our country.

Alice,

You know I hate the current HP system as much as you do, maybe even more. However, that being said...

To even kind of sort of even a little equate the competitive blunders the HPP is making with the deep rooted systemic abuses recently being dealt with in the Gymnastics community is beyond the pale.

It's not just comparing apples and oranges, it's comparing apples and thermonuclear weapons.

Curling is susceptible to a bad acting coach or official or the like, just as much as any other sport. However, our sport isn't built on the backs of prepubescents and adolescents having to constantly injure their bodies and subject themselves to medical intervention in order to impress a selection committee who has unlimited authority to chose "The Team".

Should we learn from this debacle? Yes, we should, and I suspect the USCA will do so in due course. However, this isn't the avenue to attack the HPP...it's not the same thing at all.

A bill working its way through Congress this week will require all sport organizations in the Olympic "family" down to club level to be mandatory reporters for sex abuse of minors. I've worked as a legal advisor to inspector generals at a Congressionally chartered youth & adult organization similar to the USOC. This will mean big changes for USCA. Expect fingerprint cards for all adults working regularly with minors, a few adult members "disappearing" who decline to be fingerprinted, and implementation of strict non-fraternization rules between adults and minors especially involving certified coaches and HPP staff. No more "dating" between certain groups of members.

The only thing I know that happened in Vancouver was that both US teams were going down the drain with last place finishes.

It was THAT bad.....like club curlers getting spanked by the pros. Don't get me wrong, McCormick and Schuster were good teams but they were either overmatched or made critical errors. After a few losses, lineups got changed, morale sank and nothing seemed to work.

It became painfully apparent, especially after the 2010/2014 debacles, that major changes had to be made.

But what stuck in my craw was that Halfway through the 2010 tournament, as the feelings of doom escalated, a certain USCA bigwig (who shall be nameless) through both teams under the bus.

Classic bureaucrat BS. Exonerating the leadership while laying the blame on the teams.

I never forgave that weasely little schmuck. Even today that person comes off as a shifty-eye creep.

Meh, it's not gonna hurt that much.

Coaches and officials already have to pass SafeSport and Background check screenings. Okay, no fingerprints, but I doubt that requirement will come into play anyhow.

Frankly, however, given the explosion of "We gotta screen you in your role of X", for quite legitimate reasons, the US really needs to start figuring out a way to share certifications between organizations.

I've been vetted as a Maryland Foster parent, including a much more intensive mandatory reporting requirement than SafeSport or anything the USCA is going to devise. I have been vetted for a US Security Clearance, again, stricter than anything USCA is going to come up with. I've had to be screened for my job, again including fingerprints, and a process much more detailed than anything the USCA is going to come up.

But each time, they had to start from scratch, and I had to pay a significant fee, for them to access the exact same info (in one case, for the exact same company that had done one of my previous screenings).

There needs to be a more streamlined system for this. I shouldn't have to prove I don't molest children 15 times....once should be enough (with occasional recerts, of course)

Indeed, Alan. The vetting needs to be streamlined and coordinated not just to reduce our costs and time but to prevent abusers from jumping between different clubs and sports. The sad fact is the vast majority of coaches are not abusers but we are stuck in this situation thanks to the tiny handful of abusers who got to powerful positions with enablers' help right up to the USOC, Inc. board level.

A few schumcks are lucky Team Shuster had to sign non-disparagement contracts to be allowed to compete at the Olympic Trials. But, happy thought, the former team mates, former USCA board members, plus spouses, families and friends of that Team did not have to sign such updated adhesion contracts.

So interesting how USOC demands such non-disparagment clauses in its contracts with athletes. Just as US Gymnastics Association made its athlete sex abuse victims sign nondisclosure and non-disparagement settlement agreements such stinky cover-up contracts always backfire gloriously one day.

The Spirit of Curling demands kindly feelings between true curlers. It does not demand enabling truth to be hidden forever about past gross bad acting by NGO leaders and staff.

I look forward to a few fictional "composite" characters to be cast for the future Team Shuster movie. And, a cameo from Gail Munro.
