Kelly Stearne Passes Away

Posted by his brother on Facebook, two time World Jr. Champion Kelly Stearne has passed away in Australia from injuries suffered in a fall.

Stearne was the long time lead for Paul Gowsell during their heyday in the late 70's to early 80's. It's arguable that he was one the forerunners in bringing the brush to popularity in Canada and his style coined the term snowplowing.

Just this past winter, he traveled to Vancouver for a reunion with his old teammates at the Marpole Sportsman Bonspiel. I had the good fortune to meet him and play against him in the 80's. Like anyone else I always enjoyed his fun approach to the game.

RIP Kelly, you'll be missed.

Our team played against them in their last game in the Marpole bonspiel. It was an honour to be on the ice with them. RIP, Kelly.
