Fellow curlers,

I need some help figuring out a format for an upcoming league to make it as fair and balanced as possible.

Basically, we're going to have twelve or so teams play in a eight-week long league. This does not allow for every team to play each other, and (as far as I can tell) it's too many draws for tournament-like structure. (If it's not, let me know.)

So my current thought is to randomly draw team match-ups, making sure no team plays another twice over the course of the league.

My problem now is, when I rank the team based on win-loss standings, how do I deal with ties? I mean, it's highly possible I'll have two teams both go 8-0 by the end of it (our skill levels are rather varied, which is fine - the league is purely social). So what criteria would you recommend I use to distinguish rankings?

Or if you know of another idea that works better than mine, I am all ears.

With 12 teams have 2 pools of 6 and play a full round robin over 5 weeks. Then the top 3 teams from each pool play each other over the last three weeks of the draw, and the bottom 3 teams play each other. Only problem is if you have a tie after week 5 for the 3rd spot in each pool, you can break that tie by using head to head play. This is similar to how the Canadian Junior Championship is now played.

First round: 2 pools of 6. 5 games each.

Second round: Nrs 1 and 2 from each poule then play a round-robin for places 1 to 4. Nrs 3 and 4 of each group play a round-Robin for places 5 to 8. Nrs 5 and 6 of each group play a round Robin for places 9 to 12.
Every team gets 8 games total.

You can also do the 3 groups of 4 first and then have the top 2 teams from each group play a 6 team round-Robin for places 1 to 6 and have the bottom 2 teams of each group play for places 7 to 12

Have two 6 team pools where everyone plays each other once and the top 2 teams that advance in each pool have to play a crossover with the other pool to get to the final. Ex. The team that places 1st in the A pool plays the team that places 2nd in the B pool, and the team that places 2nd in the A pool plays the team that places 1st in the B pool. And the winners of the semifinals advance to the final's and the losers are either eliminated or play in a 3rd place match. PM me if you have any questions about this format.
