Given the USCA athlete contract spells out how Olympian and World team members and medalists are selected for various events and then paid on a sliding scale based on their past competitive success resulting in income through appearance fees, hospitality gifts, and the like, why USCA would hide the ball on who is selected for what income perk is interesting.

I don't begrudge any world or Olympic team members from cashing in, but when a nonprofit like USCA is involved there should be better transparency.

The curling demonstration at the 49ers Foundation event was put on by RockSolid Productions, not the USCA. That makes any USCA disclosure in this instance a moot point.

The athlete contract does not address athlete compensation other than reimbursement for travel and training expenses and tax withholding thereon. Thus, "appearance fees, hospitality gifts, and the like" are outside the USCA's purview except where there might be a sponsorship conflict.

If there was a "ball to hide" (don't think there is), the USCA "hiding the ball" on who gets what "income perk" is no different than your boss not telling Bob down the hall what your salary is.

C'mon Chief! How does that play into a conspiracy or comparing the mighty USCA with FIFA! No fun!

The USCA was probably a go between. They sent them some names and the organization contacted the athletes to see who was available. Very similar to when Disney needed someone to teach curling for a tv show and USCA had them contact me since I lived in Southern California.

Wait? Did I just admit to being part of cover-up?

49rs

Alice,

I was fortunate enough to be invited and attended Winterfest as an Olympian guest of the 49rs foundation for three years. Not a single dime of USCA funding was spent on any of these trips and the only involvement on the USCA's behalf was to connect the foundation with myself and Tracy.

This event is a very special thing that is done for inner city kids by the 49rs. I was humbled and honored to be invited and to teach players ave guests how to curl.

I am asking you kindly to please check your facts before making assertions and implying things that you cannot substantiate.

Thanks

Air, hotel, transport, food, and travel costs reimbursed or comp'd for an interstate event at a luxury resort is different from local curlers covering a local media event of a few hours, especially when filing tax returns. For the latter, a curler might take a tax deduction for their unreimbursed travel costs if their club is a nonprofit, while the former could have a reportable income event. Gifting and pass-through organizations - those sports media marketers - are what got FIFA in trouble. But, I expect the fine folks at USCA and USOC are making sure their employees and elite athletes are on the right side of the IRS at all times and that in the Spirit of Curling all our Olympians and World team members have equal access to working vacations at Squaw Valley, Hawaii, and other tourist destinations.

Alice it is 100% not the responsibility of an employer to watch over their employees IRS responsibilities for things that are outside of their employment contract.

I would bet this is how the 49ers event occurs. The 49ers reached out to USCA, and said, we need to hire a couple of Olympic Curling ambassadors to help with our event. Do you know anyone who would be qualified and willing to help us out. USCA then volunteered a few names, and then the 49ers and reached out and made arrangements.

I'm sure that the 49ers needed Olympic names to make their function successful, whereas hiring local curler John or Jane Doe would be far less attractive to people paying money to attend the event.

This situation in no way even remotely resembles the gifting and bribes that lead to the FIFA arrests.

I wasn't suggesting USCA or USOC was legally responsible for providing even bare-bones advice to their sport associations or elite athletes. But, seriously, if USOC or USCA isn't providing general advice about federal taxable "fringe benefits" and some basic info about the loopholes in tax law on such casual income to our USCA staffers, nonprofit clubs and elite athletes even just once every four years at a seminar by USOC in Colorado Springs for one USCA staffer, after the events in Zurich and Miami this week I bet they will soon. Maybe at the upcoming curling biz meeting in Oregon? Curling has entered a brave new world of sports business and while it is teeny tiny potatoes compared to sports like football or soccer, our sponsors and supporters (and many dues paying members, too) will demand transparency and top ethics.

I'm sure they will still knock heads. There's no way the three skips are anyone but Brown, Fenson, and Shuster.

Brown, Plys, and Shuster for the men's teams. Roth and Sinclair for the women's teams.

Looks like Fenson is playing vice for Brown.

Shuster's entire team invited. Wow.

Wonder if Grace Gabower tried out again after what happened last year.

Bottom line: USA has many great curlers on its team. hope they play well and achieve the dream.

Didn't they have alternates last year? This year the men's teams don't have any alternates and the women's only has one. (and I vaguely remember the juniors having 6-person teams?) That would help with the per-person money.

Anyway, they seem to have eliminated everyone from the east coast on the adult squads anyway. I'm not suprised by some of the changes though, and it's pretty hard for them not to bring Schuster's entire team, unchanged, into the fold after their success last season.

It will be VERY strange to see Fenson throwing vice for Brown.
