The list for mixed doubles nationals has been released and they are on it. Glenn curling with his daughter and Rachel curling with her brother. Other big names include Adam Casey and Mark Kean. Pretty interesting and unexpected. What are your thoughts on this?

Are you able to just sign up and go, be invited, or do you have to qualify? Is this still not a national championship?

18 teams are seeded based on results from last year and the order of merit. Then they add one qualifying team per province. 32 teams total

How is the order of merit determined. I don't know of any mixed double spiels in Canada other than this one. Is it based on your 4 person team results? I sure hope it's hosted in Ontario as almost 3/4 of these pre-determined teams come from there. How is that possible?

Upon further inspection, only 6 of these teams were there last year, so how did the rest qualify?

It has more to do with the fact that the event is hosted in Ontario. The cost for the weekend would add up quickly for out of province competitors. The entry is $400 and hotels and flights are not cheap in Ottawa especially at that time of the year (March Break). If it wasn't for having local connections for a place to stay I can't imagine I would be playing in the Mixed Doubles.

Fair enough... cost for the teams outside of Ontario/Quebec would be prohibitive (Ottawa is a pain to get to for Western (and Maritime) teams as well... the few direct flights are very expensive.)

I do hope that they move the event after this year to another location, hopefully out West. While the Ottawa Hunt and Golf CC do a great job, this event really needs to be hosted around the country if we're going to keep with this format (i.e., invited teams pay for the privilege to participate) so that other parts of the country can afford to participate.
