Of course its not a surprise.

But JJ will still have to play the hottest teams at the end of the event.

While in recent years it was thought Manitoba women were only in the nationals if Jones was there - the others were kinda road-kill....

Now, not so much. Jones has helped elevate Manitoba womens curling.

Look what Carey did last year - finishing up nicely in the Top 3 - even with Carey and McDonald openly squabbling.

I really believe McDonald could snatch a playoff spot, perhaps thru tie-breakers but possibly on her own accord. Great front end and their 3rd isn't bad. Thurston, Spencer, Einarson, Montford, etc. would go anywhere from 4-7 to 7-4 - most of them 6-5 teams immo....

Mcdonald could grab a spot for sure and maybe thurston but im not sure about the rest. Spencer is a proven non factor at the scotties. I would be interezted in seeing how the young teams like einarson or montford would do in their first try. W8uld depend on who else is there but i think einarson be safe for a 5-6 at least.Montford would probably go 3-8 or 4-7

You under-estimate Montford. Probably the best pure curler in the field (not including Jones team) but she has far too soft a demeanour and doesn't have the on-ice killer instinct that top squads like Jones, The Mean Girls, Nedohin, Val, etc. have.

Even lesser shooters like Harvey and Spencer (the old vets so to speak) are known as killers - they just don't make enough shots!

Here's a great article on the Manitoba Scott field -

if what you say about her is true then she would have at least made the playoffs by now or maybe a tiebreaker but in 4 appearances she has yet to do that. its not just lack of killer instinct that is the reasoning for that

Imagine what damage Jen coulda done if she hadn't gone to university for 5 years and articled with a local firm?

Chelsea Carey won her first Manitoba title last year (albeit with Jones at the Olympics) at 30, Kristy McDonald, Carey's 3rd is 35.

There exists a doomsday scenario in Winkler where JJ doesn't even make playoffs. How's that? She continues out of sorts and her team can't make the difference. Jones' game usually relies on JJ making her usual celebrity last rocks, unlike Colleen Jones who liked to use her great team to sew up ends before she had to shoot. Jones strategy is kinda the opposite - so if she's out of sorts, it doesn't matter whether Lawes, Officer and McEwen average 90%.....

Yes but you are comparing top teams with an average one at best.what applies for some doesnt for everyone. Even if montford wins this year she has almost no experience against top level teams so predicting a 3-8 or 4-7 record for her seems fair

Also want to remind you that while jen and carey did not win manitoba until they wre 30 the signs were there that they were on the verge of doing it. They had made the playoffs or finals before winning

Talent wise she obviously wouldn't stack up with Homan, Sweeting, even the two Sherrys (Anderson, Middaugh), and might have problems with the new youngsters out of bc - BUT I DO THINK SHE COULD FINISH 6-5.

Lets assume all those teams are there along with galusha, arsenault, birt and horgan. Could easily see her going 3-8.
