Is USCA on the hook for sending teams to the Red Square Classic or is there a sponsor picking up most of the tab? If the former, one has to ask if there isn't a better place to spend these dollars than to send 2 teams to compete with 2 Swiss teams and 4 Russian teams.

i personally dont get why the russian event offers points or why its even considered an offical tour event. its got 8 teams entered. this just seems like it should be a fun recreational thing instead of an official event

misty1 and dbsdbs,

I'm guessing there is new WCT contract with national governing bodies to host these new 8 team matches. The U.S. Curling Grand Prix (aka Curling Night in America) had 8 teams, all "national" teams from US, China, Japan and New Zealand. What is new for Red Square is both a US HP team and a non-HP team, but the latter is a past national champion and both are high on the OOM roster.

I'd love to know how each team is invited or selected, who covers their travel expenses, what appearance fees if any they get, and what about gender parity for these new events. Do the NGOs have total control? Or will any of these events have an open invite to any team on the OOM rosters?

I'll bet New Zealand will have an 8 team event next summer during their winter. (Haka on the ice!) And Canada will start a made-for-TV outdoors series for OOM points.
