age requirements for Canadian Juniors

From the CCA website :

— Effective as of the 2015-16 curling season, the age-eligible date for juniors to play at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors was shifted six months back to fall in line with the World Curling Federation rules. Previously, Canadian juniors had to be 20 and under as of Dec. 31 of the year prior to a Canadian championship; now they have to be 20 and under as of June 30 of the previous year. Prior to this change, non-Canadian players at the World Junior Championships could be up to six months older than the eldest Canadian player.

Age Requirement

Sounds like we are rolling back six months... Is this correct?

I read this wording in the original announcement and I am confused.

What does "previous year" mean?

At face value, this statement says that now Canadians will be an EXTRA six months YOUNGER, not equal!!

20 as of June 30 instead of December 31????

..

The wording is a little confusing for sure, but this new rule does in fact allow Canadian Junior curlers to be on par with the rest of the World.

here is an example of how the rule works:

Under the old rule, December 31st was the cut-off day. meaning that anyone who turns 21 before December 31st was ineligible to compete at the Junior level. With the new rule change the cut-off date is June 30th. This means that anyone born after June 30th can turn 21 and still be eligible to play Junior curling.

As for "previous year", this is referring to if you are 20 by June 30th 2015 (for example), then you are eligible to play the 2015-2016 Junior curling season even if you turn 21 July 1st.

hopefully this clears a few things up for you!
