I’m watching the first draw on my Apple TV, switching between the two games on offer.

Whoever is on the sound desk on the Japan vs Scotland game is doing something I really like that I’ve not heard before. They’ve got the players mics sound balanced such that I’m hearing them louder on my sound system’s back speakers while the commentary is up front, making it easier to keep the different chats distinguishable. (I know it’s not some quirk on my system because I don’t hear the same on the Switzerland vs Russia match. )

Just checked line scores and there are some surprises. Does anyone know what the ice is like? Not implying it must be bad but sometimes it can get wonky over there to start with.

I watched the last half of swiss-russia. Ice looked fine, no mention from the commentators about ice conditions. Couple lopsided wins though, especially japan-scotland and china-sweden..

The score posted here for the USA vs Denmark game is backwards. USA won 8-6 in 11 ends. The standings need correcting too.

Also, the reason Finland lost to Switzerland is their clock ran out on them.

Edited to add: Score has now been fixed, thanks.

And further detail on the Finland timercide... commentators on the feed I was watching said they had an open hit for the win but couldn’t get the shot off in time.

Women's Worlds

I agree for the first day alot of upsets, Draw 1 China over Sweden (didn't see that one coming), Russia over Switzerland, Japan over Scotland (not so surprising), Draw 2 Korea over Canada.
As in most tournaments the first time teams start first game, reading the ice is all even. By their second games more talented teams are getting a better read of the ice. Cream will rise to the top at the end of round robin play.

today was not good to watch. every single game was really a contest to see who made the least mistakes. no one actually curled well for a full game. this should get better as teams adapt to the ice but..wow

sweden really struggled against china. they just couldnt make shots consistently.

feel bad for finland losing that game. they probably should have won . hoping they bounce back from that quickly

chelsea being unable to hit the paint for 1 was not promising and chelsea is already making excuses for missing shots. but its early and i trust things will get better. germany and latvia tomorrow. if they curl well those are 2 games they shouldnt really be troubled to much in

scotland losing to japan isnt surprising. they just arent that strong

There are only two teams which have a good chance of winning this event, namely: Carey and Hasselborg ( H'B ).

This is easily the best team Carey has ever assembled and after a delayed start this season are just starting to gel. The fact that they curled so well in the Scotties and were able to defeat Homan* in the finals, should be concerning to every other competitor.

But given her lack of "Motivation", it's going to be very difficult for H'B to defeat
Canada. For sure, H'B is not a "magician" by any stretch, and she's certainly not one of the brightest lights on the "T" either. Tirinzoni/Paetz, who are Not on some kind of imaginary "learning curve" after some eight months - that's the least of their problems - will need luck to see bronze.

* Any team which defeated Homan & Co. during the entire 2018/'19 season had to curl extremely well. Having won the World Cup in September, the Grand Slam of Curling in Thunder Bay, the Boost National, the Grand Slam Canadian Open, the provincial Scotties, as well as being a finalist in the Canadian Scotties and the Grand Slam Beef Masters, they have now accumulated $ 160, 000 YTD and rank No.1 on the WCT.

Years ago I predicted Homan & Co. could peak as soon as 2020. Bad news for some Manitobans, especially the Idolizers, but for the rest of Canada particularly Ontario and Alberta..........

PS. If I were Cheryl I'd be mighty peeved. Looks like TSN decided to go with only Vic & Russ for the round-robin and then dispatch Cheryl for the weekend playoffs. Since when does TSN use 2 man crews? Since about never, I'd say - other than morning draws when they tag off to Muddy & Gauthier!

Guess TSN needs to scrimp. Cheryl's hotel room for 6 extra days would have cost a fortune. Same with food and transportation! (sarcasm) [/B]

I could be mistaken (never wrong!!) but wasn't there a worlds a few years back where none of them actually went but called the games from the TSN studios in Toronto watching the monitors? Pretty hard to get a "feel" for the ice or arena conditions from 1000's of kms away.

Yet they have 20 guys, no exaggeration, on hand 24 hours for NHL trade deadline. 10 any other NHL game. And since they lost the major rights to the NHL to Sportsnet, their audiences MIGHT be as high as Scotties or Brier or Worlds audiences. MIGHT.

Where's Statman when you need him. He'd have the numbers.

I wondered about that, too. I only caught the tail end of the draw 2 telecast, but I had the suspicion they were calling it off a monitor. No post-game interview for one thing. Was there a Vic “travelogue” off the top?

Disappointing opener for Canada but only one game. So much discussion before Chelsea’s final shot, including a time-out. Made me wonder about her confidence as she settled into the hack...

i dont know if the ice is tricky but the numbers through the first 2 raws today are still pretty average. i know numbers arent the ball but from what i've seen they're fairly acurate here. no one seems to have a firm handle on the ice. everyone just kind of average right now

Sophie Jackson is apparently injured, and left after the second end of their game against China. Lauren Gray has been playing/skipping since then. No word on what the injury is or how long it may keep her sidelined.

Not exactly the finest curling in the featured match this morning, tons of misses from both the Americans and the Fins.

Watched about five minutes of that Women's Worlds "barn burner" on Sunday between Canada and Latvia. Looked like the attendance, paid or unpaid, was in the 60 - 80 range. I can now understand why Denmark was selected to host this event. Another example why curling outside of Canada is in deep, deep doo-doo.

Spent the remainder of the afternoon watching The Players at Sawgrass . The expected attendance was guesstimated to be around 36,000. The purse: $ 10,000,000. Cost of a ticket: $ 60.00. Parking: $ 35.00. Cost of a hot dog : $ 8.00, (about $ 10.50 Cdn.)

Canada looked pretty average against Latvia they need to be better than that against some of the other teams.

While curling in the USA is healthy as it is in Canada, I have to agree it isn't in the rest of the world. Where are the crowds?

Putting the worlds in an arena that holds 500 people pretty well sums up curling in Europe.
WCF is at least smart enough to put it in a place that holds 10000 ( are you listening Curl Canada)

Looked pretty average again today against Japan. Just not very sharp, with too many half shots.

Chelsea just hates playing Asian teams, lol. Lost to Japan and Korea in 2016 too.

In all seriousness though the team, and Chelsea in particular are looking out of sorts. They need to get it together quick though because 2 losses now with games against Switzerland, China, Sweden, the united states and Russia to come isnt a good spot to he in.

The saving grace for her is that it appears as though, with the exceptions of China and maybe Sweden no one is looking that great either. 5 or 6 losses should again be okay but Chelsea wouldnt want to hit that mark.

On a side note I find it disgusting the vitriol and some of the comments this team and Chelsea in particular are getting online
