Sorry to hear this.

I was at the Canadian Mixed in 1985 when he did his first TSN broadcasts with Don Chevrier.

He was the best!

RIP

Reading the Winnipeg Sun, it is saying a son passed away five or six weeks ago...so sad

This came as a surprise. Ray just lost his oldest son a few weeks back, now this!
Bob Picken the legendary Manitoba curling broadcaster (who's now 84 or 85) was on radio this a.m.
Said Ray excelled in a number of things but graded him differently than I would have.

Ray had impact in 3 different areas.
Broadcasting. Building. Playing.
He was a full service curling rounder.
Picken said his greatest achievement was his 30 yrs of broadcasting on TSN. While Ray was the first great color man on TV I think his biggest impact was in taking an essentially Canadian game - and seeding it like the Johnny Appleseed of curling into virgin curling territories - like Japan, Korea, Australia, Switzerland - just about every area other than Russia!
He trained an enabled an army of eager non-curlers into a force to be reckoned with, at points squashing many Canadian comers with superbly trained, educated and prepared teams.
As a lead he managed to get to 2 Briers - in 1958 he was part of Manitoba's "Young Sheldon" group of youngsters that toppled the famed (locally) Stan Topoloniski in the Manitoba finals - then proceeded to Victoria with 2 x 18 yr olds, a 17 yr old and a 16 yr old. They fought valiantly - in an era where 70% shot completion was actually pretty good. Legendary Matt Baldwin came out of Alberta that year - and while suffering with standing pneumonia, still managed to subdue the eager but out-gunned Children of the Corn.
Moose got back to the Brier in 1965, with legendary Don Duguid replacing Braunstein's brother at 3rd - and they busted up the field to win Canada - and take a silver at worlds, the first Canadian team not to win the worlds.
Moosie was an above average lead - certainly a competent 65 to 75% player. Nowhere near the level of leads we see in the last 10 to 15 years. Strong sweeper - the guy was nearly 6'2" and well over 220 lbs. and really had a skip's mind - just couldn't make skip's shots.

While being one of the foremost individuals to build up international curling, broadcasting in his irascible style and playing in 2 briers and numerous Manitoba championships (6 or 7 minimum would be my estimate) he also opened one of Winnipeg's first all-curling shops with an assistant, Don "Snapper" Stay who was a real beaut. I still remember visiting Ray at his shop on Notre Dame Ave. when I was a hot junior. I should have asked him for more advice - but I was far too arrogant for a snot-nosed kid at 18 or 19. I should also have asked Ken Watson to coach me but was too shy to ask.
Ray also built a substantial financial empire selling insurance. His insurance company is still in business on Winnipeg's Corydon Avenue strip.
A real renaissance man of curling. No other quite like him.
Only ones close immo - legendary player, coach and now broadcaster Kevin Martin - and possible Russ Howard.

RIP MOOSE TURNBULL - YOU WERE ELITE.

Was tough to hear about Ray's passing over the weekend

I grew up listening to him call games with Linda and Vic. He's one of the reasons why I'm so into the sport, his commentary was always informative and fun at the same time.

He was a great curler, builder, broadcaster and a great man above all. He'll be missed.
