Rate Curl Canada based on their objective

Here are the objectives of Curl Canada right from their website:
Objects of_Curling Canada
(excerpt from the Curling Canada_Constitution and By-Law)
1. to be recognized as the national sport governing body for curling in Canada;
2.to exclusively promote amateur athletics, specific to curling, in Canada on a nation-wide basis._ This will include the development and marketing of the sport of curling at both the Member Association and the club level;
3.to establish and enforce the rules of the sport of curling in Canada as well as a process by which differences and disputes can be settled;
4. to cultivate fraternal relations with other curling associations (national and international);
5.to respect and preserve the traditions of curling;
to promote, arrange, conduct and control Canadian Curling Championships;
6.to liaise with the Curling Hall of Fame and Museum of Canada Inc. which was established to recognize achievements of athletes and builders in the sport of curling in Canada.
7.to play the game for the game’s sake without thought of material reward.

6. and 7. are fluff with little meaning.

2. is the meat of the organization especially development and marketing (note at the club level) Just how would you rate them on this point? It is the main reason for all the grant money......personally I would say...dismal failure! Have they done anything to market or promote curling at the club level?

What do you all say?

3. Well they can establish but they have no power to enforce at the club level.

1. I guess the question is by who? (certainly by themselves)

Well they certainly don't do any advertising in regard to club curling and they spend no money on promoting curling beyond their own events.

The staff seems excessive for sure. They run the brier and little else.

Too bad some of that 4M$$ doesn't get back to the clubs where it is badly needed!

Actually they run every season of championship event, At one point the local committees had a large input into the events that they hosted, Now they simply do what the CC wants, when it wants and how it wants, Ever looked at their staff list?

Curl Canada does run quite a few events when you actually look at it and think about it. All of the national competitions Travelers Club, Mixed, Mixed Doubles, U 18, Junior, Senior, Masters, Canada Cup etc. The whole reason Briers and Scotties have become the big events they are is because they are professionally managed by Curl Canada. They used to be run entirely by sponsors and host committee. Obviously they have a lot of focus and funding around the olympics as well. I'm not positive but I imagine the ads you see on TV that are more "dramatic" with younger kids playing the sport are funded by Curl Canada... I think those are pretty good. Lots of programs, grants and funding in place and a lot of what they do is support provincial organizations as well. I think they are doing all right! Club recruitment is hard to drive from the top down, has to be done on a local level. It is a struggle we all face, established curlers should be asking new or non-curlers to join their teams, getting kids to curl on their adult teams, asking new Canadians to curl etc. (it's hard I know, I like to be competitive). Establishing junior programs are really important.

So what is the real difference between Curl Canada and the CCA? Seems to me it just a way to get more funding and wages for the same people!

Again, how does this help grass roots curling when it sucks money away from the clubs.

There are close to 70 people listed as staff on the CC website . Once upon a time the CCA used to publish a finacial statement that showed profit/loss etc for the year, Now all we get is a balance sheet showing assets. If an organization is not upfront about their finances, should they ever be trusted?

CCA renamed itself Curling Canada.

This is what I've seen, as well.
A few years ago, I was not at all impressed with how they ran the Scotties event. For several days in the days right before the start of the Scotties, tickets were only available onsite or through on-line purchase - not through any of the usual physical ticket selling locations. Not the most intelligent way to get people in the seats...

And, though they were admittedly short of volunteers, they refused offers of help unless people paid them $100 for the 'privilege' of helping them.
Ridiculous.

This is obviously not a recipe for the progress of curling.

Has I see it the system is upside down. The Sport ministry should be giving the grant money to the clubs and the clubs should then support the CCA or whatever they call themselves. That way the CCA would have to justify it's existence.

No way they should be wasting money the way they do. It is plain kingdom building in handshake with CAC.
