GSOC- National Dec. 6-11 2016

It just gets better every event
Check out the Top world curlers at this event.. its like a mini-Olympics/worlds

Asides:
1. Cathy O will be spare for Team Tirinzoni...
Cathy has won four titles in the series including two as a spare. She helped Val Sweeting capture her first career Grand Slam at the Masters in 2014 and assisted Eve Muirhead with her successful title defence at the Playersí Championship this past season.

2.After a three-peat at the European Championships, Swedenís Niklas Edin now looks to make it three in a row this season in the Pintyís Grand Slam of Curling.

Edin edged Norwayís Thomas Ulsrud in the European final this past weekend and now shifts his focus to the Boost National, starting Tuesday at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

Can Edin go for three? He would join an exclusive club with only skips Kevin Martin, Glenn Howard and Rachel Homan having won three (or more) consecutive championships in the series.

Wild cards

The Pintyís Grand Slam of Curling granted sponsorís exemptions for the Boost National to a pair of Northern Ontario teams.

Krista McCarville of Thunder Bay will play in the womenís division. McCarville has only competed in a few events this season following a comeback season last year winning four consecutive tour titles plus a silver medal at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

18-year-old Tanner Horgan of Sudbury makes his series debut on the menís side. Horgan, runner-up at the Canadian juniors, has balanced this year with a handful of menís events alongside his junior schedule.
-----------------
Olympic gold medallist Brad Jacobs would love to win the Boost National in front of his fans
------------------
Brad Gushue looks to make his season debut after missing eight events to start the year due to a hip/groin issue.
Mark Nichols drops back to his regular third position.
Nichols kept the team in first place on the World Curling Tourís Order of Merit by qualifying for the playoffs in all eight tournaments including a runner-up finish at the Canada Cup this past weekend.

Now he hands the wheel back to Gushue as they prepare to defend the Boost National title.

It all start tonight ...

Team Sidorova

- has played in only three events this season, never getting past the quarterfinals
- were upset in the European playdowns with Team Moiseeva going on to win the European Championships.
- the Russian Federation pulled Team Sidorova from the Continental Cup before the European playdowns were even held citing a conflict with the teamís training schedule.
- will be interesting to see if they can regain their form at the Boost National.

Sponsors exemptions? Too bad that they could be taking points away from teams with a legitimate chance of making the trials or pretrials and need every point they can get,

Any streaming available?

The men's looks 4 teams short at 14, two 5 team divisions and a 4 team?

Great field on both sides.

If they are 4 men's teams short, why wouldn't they offer those spots up to the next teams in line willing and available until they filled them? What a waste of a great opportunity for those teams.

Who actually makes the decision who gets invited or qualifies for these events?

There are 15 teams, or three 5 team divisions, Koe is missing on Curling Zone and the site in the standings.

http://www.thegrandslamofcurling.co...onal-standings/

The WCT site said 18 teams, that is where I came up with 4 short.

Qualification for the National

The National features a total of 15 menís teams and 15 womenís teams. Both menís and womenís divisions include the top 14 teams based on the World Curling Tourís Order of Merit total ranking system (as of Oct. 31, 2016) plus 1 sponsorís exemption.

In the event a team declines their invitation, the next team on the OOM rankings will be invited until the field is complete.

The Pintyís Grand Slam of Curling reserves the right to implement a sponsorís exemption in both the menís and womenís fields in which one spot could be filled at their discretion. If the series chooses not to implement the sponsorís exemption, the next-ranked team on the OOM rankings will receive an invite.

Őt was 18 until last year. They probably forgot to edit to put the change in. I'm guessing that Gerry will rectify that by tomorrow.

Question resiliency

Team Hasselborg - their first event following a disappointing finish to the European Championships where they lost the final when Hasselborg wrecked on a guard with her last rock.
A solid performance in the Soo might go a long way in proving the team has the resiliency required of elite teams.
Anna faces the very tough Korean EunJung Kim who won the Pacific-Asia Curling Championship last month to qualify for the Humptyís Champions Cup.

Matches start at 8:30 am ET Today...

Hasselborg was inconsolable when that draw hit the high guard, I think the curl was a little later and they thought that stone was not in the line they threw.

My bet is she comes out confident and does well here.

I'm here

I'm here in person at the arena. My first attendance of a big event.
I caught the last 3 ends of that Carey-Holman match. It looked as one sided in person as it does on the score line.

Is there anything anyone wants to know about that me, a complete amateur observer, could help with?

Time to go settle in for Muirhead-Rocque.

C'mon HR. Cathy O played well - but its not like knocking off Muirhead, Homan, Annette Norberg or Mirjam Ott. They knocked off a group of eager-beaver Manitoba fawns!

Cathy O is a true legend of women's curling but 88% is simply NOT SUSTAINABLE - especially as the going gets rougher!

HotRocks posted that a solid performance by Hasselborg might go a long way in proving the team has the resiliency required of an elite team. Might? Why only might? Why wouldn't that be definitve proof?
And if they don't at least make the SF's, are you inferring that will prove they actually don't have the required resiliency to be an elite team? And if that's the case, how would you explain why they are currently ranked 4th on the WCT money list and are already considered "elite" by many?

We have had some issues with the site being spammed and as the official stats/scoring for the GSOC, we need to focus on making sure that system works so when this happens we have to turn some things off.

We're working on solutions and have identified some of the issues, now it's a matter of finding the best solution so we don't need to turn off parts of the site.

Early returns indicate the Homan group has returned, loaded for bear and bent on vengeance. Some amazingly high percentages - only Courtney in the average category. Bodes well for Homan - not the other teams at this event.

Jones look likes she's powering down after her dominating performance at last weeks major event. Jones has been known to pace herself (and her team) so a dropdown won't be considered a disappointment - just a tuneup!

Carey still appears scattered. Obsess Curler seems to confirm this - as the Homan/Carey affair was a mis-match!

Hopes rise for Russia's Anna Sidorova. We'll also see how Princess Eve fares, armed with Howard's diversified strategy that places the onus on all team members, not just Eve. If Sloan doesn't cut it - I suspect Eve will go back to the old ways!
