On the Rocks - Manitoba Curling

A great read from the Winnipeg Free Press on rural curling.

Being involved in a rural club, it is getting tougher & tougher to attract members. Every year we have one bonspiel at the end of the year that we have lots of non curlers enter as we use it as a fundrasier for our curling club.

We have to try & keep coming up with new ways to raise money for our club in order to keep it going.

The competitive curlers now have a huge advantage in the ice conditions that they are almost always playing on. If you were to play the big boys "Soughton, McEwen, & Fowler" on rural club ice like some of the ones that MB Legend quoted then I would guess that you would have a 50/50 or 40/60 chance to beat them. When they are playing on the great ice conditions then you would have about a 5% chance of beating them. Back in the day, the likes of Stoughton & Burtnyk would be seen traveling to the small clubs to play in the cash spiel circuit but nowadays the closest you are getting to some of the "bigger names" would be certain players maybe Carruthers, McNamee team, McEwen, Ramsey Team, maybe a few others. Do I blame them? No If I had the chance to play on practically perfect ice everytime I played then I would be jumping all over it.

I think the what Kaitlyn & Reid are doing with the roadshow is helping to try & get the game back in rural clubs. I have heard nothing but great things about it & we hope to take advantage in the 2013/2014 season.

Most of the decline of curling anywhere is a simple matter of demographics, and you can only fight demographics to an extent.

Rural Canada is in decline and there is nothing that will save curling there aside from smart consolidation to stave off its complete disappearance.

The only growing parts of the country are fueled by immigration, and since very few immigrants curl, that's going to be a problem at some point. It is possible to change this, but perhaps not easy.

Most ideas to grow the grass roots of curling that doesn't deal with demographic reality is probably not very useful, in my opinion.

There couldn't be a worse time to bring in Mixed Doubles.
Half the amount of curlers taking up a 2 hour time slot when clubs are suffering. May work well in Europe, but not here.

The IcePlant and the IceMaker.

Swan River has hosted Martin, Stoughton, Moskowy, Cotter, McEwen, Michel, and on and on... Because we have a great ice maker; a board that puts quality ice FIRST. (maintenance, upgrades), and great ice.

The Whites Classic attracts the best curlers because the ice is consistent, true, and keen. If the ice plant is deteriorating, fix it. Maintain your rocks.

Fans and young curlers are inspired to see the world's best in a smaller community, shooting for the big bux. THAT then, spawns local participation and also the ability to host other events. (Provincial Championships, National Championships).

It's up the the board. In rural Canada, a farmer can also be an icemaker. It is a nice balance of two occupations. It is a model that works.
