Ponder the thought that a fast start often leads to decline. Where do you go when you curl 90% in the first game and leave a bunch of mean girls layin'?

Anyways, the 3 worst showings on opening day were: Homan, Jones & Sweeting - pretty much the consensus Top3 - although many have made a case for CC Carey.

Of the 3 it appears Rachel Homan might actually have been the best of a bad lot of favourites. Jones may have edged by Valerie but Val & Co. were truly putrid after JJ spotted them a three in the 1st end.

If those supposed Top3 teams continue like they showed Saturday - McCarville The Carver will make short work of them.

I'm starting to become a McCarville Believer - she's a rock on the tee - and she delivers as good a rock as I've seen from the best throwers in recent history (ie. Homan, Jones, Sweeting, Lori O,

Jones managed to finagle herself a 72% by making some closing shots to eliminate Val. At times JJ looked lost and confused. Only Kaitlyn's superior shot-making skills kept Team Jones in the game and prevented Val from putting them away!

For the poster who claimed that Cathy O dissected Emma Miskew - a quick look at curling.ca percentages tell a different story. Homan's charges out-curled (or tied) their opponents at all positions excepting skip. . . . . and that was the difference. CC out-scored Rachel by 15 pts (91 to 76) and that was all she wrote.

Right now just based on the opening day draw - I'd have to rate Carey & McCarville as early favourites to face off in the playoffs.

Still can't write off either Jones (unbeaten) or Homan (1 loss). Jones has the indomitable quality of looking out of sorts in 1 game and then supergirl the next. Homan tends to have tougher time shedding the out-of-sorts tag.

huge win for epping last night. that'll help the confidence

jones escapes again. she's not playing well on the whole but making the big shots. however, lets be honest sweeting let her off the hook like 5 or 6 times last night. this is ridiculous. eventually teams will start punishing her for her mistakes..you'd think

So disappointed for Sweeting. She had that game well in hand and let Jones off the hook. Something must happen to her or her team and it affects their confidence.

Apparently Epping controlled Gushue like nobody's business. I'm sure Goo had marked this one down as a gimmee game - but John was still trying to help Goo win to the end - with some key guard misplacements late in the game. Epping was happy for the win, I'm sure but will have to be better down the pike. Gushue and Mark sure looked out of sorts last nite - wonder why?

Englot now has her chance to keep her team in the thing vs. Jones this a.m. Jones is obviously very vulnerable with the amount of mistakes she's conceding. She was doing everything she could to buoy Sweeting last nite - but Val turned the tables on JJ and donated the game back to Jones. Kaitlyn Lawes was the all-star 3rd from Day 1 (which means nothing). Chelsea Carey & Krista McCarville tied for best skip.

Sweeting and Jones were awful. Rachel Homan was actually better than both in her loss to Carey - but amazingly couldn't stand up to Chelsea Carey's remorseless shot-pelting (91 to 76 for Carey)

I didn't bother to check back and verify who exactly made that 'impossible' statement but I should have guessed, M.L., it must be you.

After all, there is no other poster who has endless opinions on just about everything, and who tends to go ONANDONANDONANDON.

looks like the ice is not consistent and the rocks arent matched

getting testy - ben and brent getting snarly

id turn in my mike before the fbi starts investigating

not sure why top two teams think its smart to play first end with 16 rocks in play - virtually eliminating the value of last rocks , depending on a triple raise in off fluke to decide game ..

new rule - call shot

too bad announcers only deal with fluff and dont talk about the interesting stuff

Exclamation

Commercials are already on mute. I realize that the advertisers pay the bills but does anyone really believe that JJ, a lawyer was so uneducated about financial planning. For an organization with so many staffers, the CC should be able to find more sponsors for this event, Bring back Johnny Chow!
Fun watching Koe managing the clock so poorly.

I'm in South America so depending on this site for an honest review...is the quality of play good enough for Olympic gold? Or should Sweden & Great Britain be ready for curling gold?

Which country are you planning to overthrow curlerbroad? lol
Anyways, Team Homan, after an opening nite loss to CC Carey starting to see their percentages creep close to the 90s - now on ice vs. the cautious and deliberate Krista McCarville. On paper its a mis-match but neither team wants to take in an early 2nd loss.

Jones was let off the hook in G1 by the woeful Val Sweeting, who probably needs to win out to qualify for playoffs. But even Jones is starting to power up after shooting poorly vs. Sweeting and mediocre/average vs. Englot.

Carey & Schiedegger still lurk.

Frankly, only Jones & Homan have legit shots at winning Olympic gold. immo

Mens - Gushue powering up after a sluggish start. McEwen showing some powerful percentages, but doesn't he always - before melting down at moment critical?

Koe - Jacobs - Gushue would all medal at Olympics - all would challenge for gold.

keep in mind one of 9 will win here

the one that curls near perfecy, gets hot, and gets the breaks - lucky spins, flukes , ice that doesnt end up with reid looking incredulous because it didnt curl as expected with perfect broom and weight

then in korea there is a system designed for sudden death

loose to sweden , norway , scotland, china in one semi or final and you cry for 4 years

Looks like Raytch (Homan) has quickly rounded into form. She was throwing lazer bombs this morning - wouldn't surprise me if she didn't run the table, finish first and as I predicted several times - book her spot in the golden game!

Krista McCarville put up a valiant fight vs. Rachel but its obvious McCarville's super-power is keeping games close. She rarely (if ever) takes those wild-eyed chances Jennifer Jones too often wades into. She knows how to keep games close - but against a true monster like Homan you have to do more. You have to take chances.

Jones is often accused of walking the high wire without a net - but she wins far more than she loses. Teams like Carey & McCarville will have to up their game, and their level of risk-taking to put one over on Homan.

Final should be Carey vs. Homan or Homan vs. Jones - - - 97.5% probability it will be either of these two options!

Englot should be put out of her misery tonite - there's no way in the world she survives a severe shot-pelting from Rachel Homan, who's rapidly rounding into monster form. Englot will be all but done and down w/ her 4th loss tonite. 4 losses ain't gonna make playoffs - no way.

Jones meanwhile might be in her oft-charitable mood to donate a game - and no better recipient than Julie Tippin, the Ontario smooth operator. Never know with JJ - they rarely go thru events without moderate to severe blips these days!

TSN has a very formulaic way of broadcasting pro curling. 3 likeable and essentially knowledgeable announcers backed by a host who focuses on humour and causing trouble between the commentators (Vic).

Less than likeable characters doing the morning draws and features during the afternoons and evenings. Cathy G & Moody.

Sportsnet rolls from game to game on a consistent basis - sometimes missing early shots in their feature game but covering a ton of final 3 or 4 stones on other more interesting games. I think that's a better model for curling coverage - as curling has become mostly an in-studio production.

Anyways, predictions held again. Jones took out Julie Tippin and Rachel mangled poor little Englot.

Rachel might need the final nite round-robin game to jump over Jones into the final. Can't see anyone other than Carey or Jones standing up to these Ottawa mean girls who are shot-pelting in the 90s again. Neither Carey nor Jones have the firepower to properly battle Homan when she's curling up a storm.

Kerri Einarson must be sitting at home thinking - Why the heck aren't we in the deal vs. mopes like Ali Flaxey & Mickey Englot?

Same could be said for Kelsey Rocque - although Rocque doesn't quite have the power thru her lineup that Einarson does.

Either way - you're always gonna get a couple teams who really aren't in the same league as the Top 3 or 4.

Predict Val Sweeting is gonna pick up her game and start a march to winning out and trying to qualify out of the 3-spot. Only trouble with that, it might be too little too late as Val spent a bit too much time nose-picking and not curling early. The biggest obstacle to Val going 5-3 is Rachel Homan. Val still has a match with Rachel left - and Rachel assumes she needs the match to have a chance to nab 1st - and can also put Val out of her misery.
If Val can't rise up - the battle for the FINAL 3 boils down to Jones, Homan & either Scheidegger or McCarville.
Although not as experienced as Krista Mac - Casey S. takes a few more risks and has a more varied repertoire of strategy than the laconic and mostly defensive McCarville.

Illustrating just how woeful Team Flaxey is - Chelsea Carey curled her worst game of the trials and still managed to slaughter Flaxey this a.m.

Carruthers almost laid a Reid-Burger in his outing vs. Erratic Epping - but managed to draw the pot facing 3 w/ final stone to put Epping out of his misery and keep Team Carruthers in the hunt at 2-2.

Big game this afternoon - Clash of the Unbeatens - Kevin Koe vs. Mike McEwen - could be our first game where every player curls in the 90s (hi 80s at worst)
