Mixed Doubles

Does anyone know why Ryan Taylor and Joanne Courtney are playing together in the Mixed Doubles? What happened to Reid Carruthers? They were doing so well together and I'm just wondering who Ryan Taylor is and also why Reid isn't listed as playing for Canada.

Eight to two for Canada over Turkey through five ends. A picture from f/b shows that Reid is indeed playing for Canada. Good luck kids.

Why does one group have 7 teams while all the others have 8. Did one team drop out ?

Every member nation is allowed one entry so you get a random number of entries. Don't get me started on how useless the round robin is or how dumb it is to not have some distinction of curling levels. We had a long thread on this last year.

Wink England

Brits appear to have three teams, England, Scotland and Wales.
If they all do well could GB send more than one team to the Olympics? Maybe Canada should send a few teams as well, although really, one should be enough. I'd like to see Joanne add another world championship to her resume`. QR

Its fair that you dont like it. Its fair that you hate it. And its fari that you think it is dumb. But it is just as useful or useless as any other sport, including traditional 4 person teams. There are lots of people who do like it, and again, its completely fair that you disagree.

NO. They can only send one team to the Olympics as Great Britain. This does bring up a great question though as why are they able to send 3 teams to worlds? They have not been 3 separate countries for hundreds of years. Very similar to our provinces under one rule. Just a couple years ago Scotland voted to separate from UK/Britain and lost. Northern Ireland might as well put in a team too. Maybe we could send our top 3 teams too.

Watched the Canada/ check game on utube, which had excellent curling although Canada fell short . The tv production was good and the commentating, while kept simple , was very good. Czechoslovakia curled an excellent game.

Iirc, it's Great Britain's choice whether to send a unified GB team or allow its constituent countries to compete individually at world sports events. They started doing it in the Olympics for London in 2012 so they would net a bigger haul of medals at their home games than England could do by themselves, and have kept doing it for both winter and summer Olympics ever since. I seem to recall Andy Murray's likelihood to medal in tennis as being an example that kept being brought up for 2012. (And they were right.)

Similarly, some of the US overseas territories are allowed to compete separately. That's how Monica Puig won the gold in tennis last year competing for Puerto Rico's team. If she'd competed for the USA she wouldn't even have made the US Olympic team.

as i thought the czech republic were able to not only test but beat canada. that was an excellent game though. both teams curled at a high level.

the schedule really didnt do canada any favors. they got all the bottom teams out of the way and now all the tough teams are coming. they've got to be careful here

Great Britain has always had a united team for the Olympics - it didn't start in 2012. Not sure why, but it's been that way since 1896. On the other hand, the four nations play as separate entities in basically every other sporting competition in the world.

Using the crutch or tuck-support non-broom is a distinct disadvantage in this sport. At this level - maybe those kinds of curlers should be encouraged to use a broom for the slide, so they can sweep. Also observed that better teams are line-calling every shot - house or hack, and have this planned and it is second nature.

I was thinking the exact same thing when watching the CAN-CZE game on Monday. Having one player sweep EVERY stone is a disadvantage no matter how great of a sweeper Joanne is.

On a separate note, what is the qualifying system for the playoffs? I couldn't really find anything on that subject.
