Curling Speed Traps

Has anyone/club bought a new speed trap recently?

We are looking at getting a new one, and I'd like to hear any feedback if you have.

Or, if your club COULD afford to get one, what would you like to get?

Thanks.

Cyn

You can also obtain units that will display interval times, e.g. back line to hog, for self-training throwing splits. I'd like to get a a system for instructing college and intermediate curlers, as well as for myself. What systems have others configured for split timing. Brower Timing makes something adaptable for curling, but I know there are others from the equestrian sports, etc. Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers.

Thanks! Really good for the quantitative curler analysing their delivery.

try tractronix.com

They have a speed trap which is about a third of the cost of others we could find. The display is pretty small, but it works fine. It is inexpensive enough to consider purchasing for personal as well as club use.

Would people be interested in a wired solution, small display, split times, not after release velocity, but priced more in the personal use range?

I've got the basics of a hack/design in mind and plan on building it for myself, just curious.

the Brower system is over $1300. The Tractronix system is about $350.

The wired systems tend to be a pain in the butt.

We have an older one.

You wrap them up, then the cords get all tangly and slide around on the ice as you try to set them up.

Plus, no matter how clear you label everything, someone always gets confused as to which wire goes where. This particular box has to be set up in a particular way, otherwise the numbers are all screwed up.

I spent a half an hour setting it up, just to have it die on me after one rock was thrown. On top of insult to injury, I had to go find a screwdriver to remove the battery case to put a new battery in.

Not only that, but its just more things for everyone to trip over.

My two cents.

Cyn

So recently I've hacked something up for our team/club.
The design works really well and if there is enough interest I cold try to draw the circuit designs I used.

I'm using a Traktronix system with the "extra" large scoreboard display so you can see your time after every delivery. The infrared sensors (you need two pairs) can be programmed to re-arm themselves after a user-selectable time period. I use 5 seconds and it works well. About $500 complete, with the large scoreboard. The whole thing is wireless, except for the scoreboard, which needs the power brick plugged into 120V AC.

I use one of the edge sheets at the club, and put the scoreboard on the sideboard halfway down the ice. When you go to the other end to throw rocks, you just take the sensors with you and flip the scoreboard around.

We use it for teaching throwing to back-to-tee splits, and for learning how to throw various hog-to-hog times on takeout. Great learning tool.

Cheers.

Is there a web site for the traktronix system?

Go to http://www.tractronix.com/products/dual_beam.html

This is a link to the dual beam system. The large LED scoreboard is extra, and they build them to order. The numbers are large enough to be seen from the other end of the rink. It is not listed on their web site, but if you contact them via email they will get back to you with prices. I found the folks at Tractronix really easy to work with, and they knew exactly what I would be doing with the unit for curling.

Put a 5 second re-arming delay on the IR beams and you've got an ideal self practice system. I use mine to train more advanced college curlers to improve draw weight and learn how to throw various hit weights on command. (I also use it myself when I can squeeze in.) I throw the whole system, including scoreboard in a carry case we take back and forth to the club, and can travel with for instruction if necessary.

Cheers.

Chronocurl is new on the market and works wonderfully. It's only 250$.

It's a single device that works over bluetooth enabled smartphones and tablets. No complex setup like the speed trap, just a single device and a reflector.

The pro-version of the companion software comes loaded with features, it even lets your hear your split times over headphones.

Take a look here www.chronocurl.com
