it was a weird game newfoundland controlled the whole thing and then had one bad end that gave steve a shot for 4 which he missed.

steve had a huge miss with his first in the 10th that gave brad the opening for the win

The Brier never has been "the best teams in the country," it was intended for the best team in each province. That promoted healthy provincial rivalries and gave the Brier its subtle, arcane but unique qualities. Now it's becoming a veritable "tour" event, and that's something it shouldn't even try to emulate.

Besides, two Alberta teams in the final would certainly not be in the spirit of the Brier's traditions.

Even the record book is going to be trivialized and compromised. Manitoba tops the table at the moment with 27 Championships, with Alberta in second on 26. So if Morris manages to win, the title does not go to Alberta, it goes to a "non-provincial" entity known as Team Canada.

PS: Although you don't strike me as someone with an open mind, I would suggest you buy and read Bob Weeks' excellent Brier history: "The Brier." He captures why we love the traditional Brier.

0-2 isn't DEAD MAN'S TRAIL - but it sure helps set the tone!

honestly with the way that game went newfoundland would have been more disappointed with the loss. saskatchewan was always chasing with the exception of the 8th end when they got 3. i think the better team won in the end

and i agree that 0-2 isnt dead but in this field its a bad thing to do to dig a little hole early

Had he taken the easy tap-back deuce, he's up 1 without in 9 ... almost home free. That shot was worth the risk in the 3rd end, not in the 8th down 1.

Too bad, because Manitoba played a solid game ... certainly good enough to win. Big game tonight. Manitoba can lose to Canada, Northern Ontario and Alberta because they're probably going to be there at the end. More than one loss to the rest of the pack is probably too many.

We are already have lost to China, Norway et al thanks partially to our talent helping them out and to them to have money from their government to play in our world curling events. So your point is quite frankly is mute. That's not all a bad thing at all. Having said that, the David Murdoch's et al would have a hard time getting out of Manitoba and Alberta play downs especially as they do lose to the part time touring teams a fair bit.

I think the Briar could continue as an all inclusive canadian event. This relegation stinks and if they want more entries include them in some foremat. The big problem for me given the competitive nature and professionalism of teams spawned by the Olympic attraction is that our canadian representative can no longer come from the briar. As noted some of Canada's best teams are not here. With the further expansion of slams and top level tournaments where all our best teams participate, it would be very easy and fair to pick our best team. The briar concept and all its history would continue with all its records and concepts in tact.

Heartbreaker for PEI. Did the stone pick or did he just throw it that tight and/or light?

I love how people here defend the inclusion of mediocre teams to the Brier because of tradition.

Lets go back even further to more tradition and make everyone own their own stones and play 12 end games.
No more push brooms, everyone must use corn brooms whilst smoking!

Tradition, phffft!

Apparently you would consider Mark Dacey's team "mediocre" in 2003 also at the beginning of the week (before they beat Ferby to win the Brier). You cant tell which province will win the Brier until they all play in the Brier for the week. You would consider Jack McDuff "mediocre" and due for relegation at the beginning of the week of the 1976 Brier too (until he won the Brier).

You would consider Reid Carruthers not "mediocre" but they have started 0-2 and at this rate may go 0-11, and Manitoba's not "mediocre" team (in your opinion) might just get Manitoba into the relegation round at the rate they're going.

Nova Scotia has won more Briers than PEI, New Brunswick, NWT, Newfoundland and Quebec, yet PEI, New Brunswick, NWT, Newfoundland and Quebec are all curling in the Brier this week despite wining far fewer Briers than Nova Scotia.

Great game by Team Kean considering they are so young. Here's hoping they can win a few more. Good for B.C. too, knocking off the favorites amidst all the hype about the "all star" team. This was a day of good curling, so much better than the ladies I hate to say.

Nova Scotia has been in every Brier played since 1927 ...88 years not counting the World War 2 Years when it wasn't played.

It's a sad day for Nova Scotia Curing,A Sad day for MacLeod Burgess and team and a sad day for Canadian Curling. For all those Curling administrators who don't have any idea how difficult it is to win a Brier spot...shame on you. I have represented NS at more than one Brier and to think of the hard work, the hours put in....the years of paying club dues.....to win a Brier spot and then be told to sit out!
IT IS WRONG.
Shame on the CCA for not finding a way to run a 14 team week.

Manitoba is 0-2 after day 1.
Let's all cheer for the Bison Boys to implode this week and be stuck in relegation next year. Then we will all see how Mediocre feels.

jim was a really good sport about the heckling last night but thats just disrespectful and not a part of our sport. hockey maybe, tennis sure but not curling and what happened last night was fross.

on a more positive note it was a good win for team kean. pei will have the morning off so they can recover from that. adam looked just so lost after that miss. i know it must hurt him in particular because he was brilliant and lutch all night. he made a ton of great draws to save ends for pei.
