Junior Provincials

There's some junior hockey thing going on now, but the real exciting competition is many Junior Curling Provincials are starting this week with PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Northern Ontario, BC underway!

Some great stories with defending World Junior Champions skipped by Kristin Clarke are playing and hoping to repeat without last year's skip Mary Fay who left the team to pursue a heavy school schedule.

Tanner Horgan has had a great season, but their number one goal this season is the Canadian Juniors and they start this week in Northern Ontario.

Tyler Tardi has proven they're a big favourite in British Columbia and are looking to get to the Canadian Juniors to challenge Horgan as one of the favourites to win it all!

Brooke Godsland and Greg Blyde won last week in Newfoundland & Labrador while Team Pinksen and Team Siksik who will be representing Nunavut at the 2017 Canadian Juniors in Esquimalt, British Columbia.

Check the scoreboard on the right side for all scores and results, we'll be covering them from start to finish!

What are you looking forward to in the Juniors?

Is there any web streaming of these events?

yeah, horgan and tardi have to be the teams everyone will be looking at this year. think tardi has more opposition in british columbia than horgan does in northern ontario though. if neither one gets there id look at nova scotia and alberta if matthew manuel and or karsten sturmay are representing them but the tournament would be really hard to call if they dont get there.

womens side nova scotia would be a favorite with kristin clarke but british columbia has 2 really strong teams in sarah daniels and corynn brown and lets not forget justine comeau out of new brunswick. would say those 3 would be the favorites.

one thing for me is want to see if matthew mccrady has found a way to better manage his energy on the ice. he made for an entertaining final last year against tardi but at times it was a bit much so i hope he makes the tv game so i can see that.

Not sure if you all have forgotten about Braden Calvert of Manitoba....he has Dunst ones old team and will be skipping them....MB has won the last 4 Canadian Jr titles so I think they are the heavy favorites

I had actually assumed they aged out of juniors by now. Well then yeah, you have to add them in the mix

Dunstone's teammates from last season play with Jason Gunnlaugson on the Men's Tour and are teaming up with Braden Calvert for Juniors. They've had a very good season and will likely be the favourite to win it all at Junior Nationals.

Manitoba Provincials go next week, along with Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Quebec.

NB Juniors

Upsets abound in Miramichi after two days of curling at the U21 provincial championships!

In a wide open men's side, with the departure of a few curlers who aged out this season, almost every team had a legitimate shot at the title. Now the triple-knockout field narrows a bit as the younger teams fall off the pace, but it is still way too early to predict a favourite.

Team Tracy won the "A" bracket, defeating Team Marin. Tracy has, including himself, three of the four members of NB's 2015 Canada Games team. Marin would be considered a strong contender, having won a couple of U18 titles. They will be facing Team Smeltzer, the bronze medalists from last year, in a "B" semi-final.

Team McKinley, another top team that includes two of the defending champions from 2016, takes on Tracy in the other "B" semi-final tomorrow.

Team Robichaud, led by the only other U21 winner in the field, struggled out of the gate with two quick losses. This team had been on a great streak, winning a cashpiel undefeated as well as earning the #1 seed at the provincial preliminary event. Don't count them out for a run through the "C".

On the women's side, two-time defending champion Team Comeau has suffered two losses, and has yet to make a qualifying match. The first came at the hands of Team Park in the "A" semi-final, and the second to Team Crook in the "B" semi-final. Some may panic in this position, but the defending Canadian junior bronze medalists have been in this situation before. In their previous title runs, they only took one bracket each time, then rattled off a string of victories to secure the provincial crown.

Team Crook has the early edge by defeating Team Park in the "A" final. Crook's dominance so far is no surprise to those who are familiar with the NB junior curling scene, as they have been battling back and forth with Team Comeau in the past few years. Tomorrow's "B" final will be a rematch against Team Park, who should not be taken lightly either.

Not many junior teams this year in the province, but both champions will represent NB well at the national championship. In my opinion, the ladies will contend for a medal regardless of who emerges. More updates to come!

Watching some of the Nova Scotia broadcast (excellent production quality) and noticed several sweepers with their hands at the very bottom of the handle. Isn't there a lot of loss of pressure and don't they still teach the 1/3, 1/3 hand position anymore?

NB Juniors

Team Crook has won the provincial championship undefeated, taking down Team Comeau twice in the process. Two very talented teams that could undoubtedly win any province, but it was Team Crook who emerged on top this season. It will be a first time representing NB on the national stage for Team Crook. Expect them to be on or near the podium in Esquimalt.

Team Tracy has a double life in the playoffs after defeating Team McKinley in a "C" bracket extra end thriller. They will face Team Marin, who is now in a must-win situation. Both teams are evenly matched, having split their two games 1-1. The first match is currently underway and can be watched on Bell Aliant TV1's livestream with commentary.

Is it the top 3 teams that make the playoffs in the BC junior playdowns or top 4?

If it's only 3 then Tyler tardi is in a win or you're out situation tonight

Re: N.S. JR. Women's Curling Championship

Another curling powerhouse along the lines of Homan, capable of not only winning the Canadian championship but the Worlds is quickly developing in the Maritimes.

At this juncture the outlook is very promising for the Clarke team.

Yeah, the Atlantic provinces definitely have some fantastic teams coming up . Kristine Clarke, Justine comeau, Rene comeau, Matthew Manuel. New Brunswick and nova Scotia looking strong but Prince Edward island and new foundland are a little behind. No disrespect intended to those provinces but they just don't seem to have anyone coming up at the level of New Brunswick and nova Scotia.

Kinda late to join this thread. Sorry!

First the boys.

As in any other Provincials, it comes down to one game - winner takes all - final (except NB, PEI, NS who have full triple knock out systems).

With their track records at Nationals and playing on the tour, you have to consider B.Calvaert (MB) and T.Horgan (NO) as potential National champions. T.Tardi (BC) and K. Sturmay (AB) are certainly in the mix to make the playoffs. It will be interesting to see the Bison squad as they have not been playing together this season. For those who think that the departure of M.Dunstone will be a fatal blow, I believe this team will be even better under the command of Braeden. That young man can make the big ones AND he is SO cool under pressure.

The provincials in the Maritimes being over, it will be interesting to see how newcomers to the national scene will do. This will be the case of G.Blyde (NFLD) and L. Marin (NB). Contenders or pretenders? M. Manuel (NS) will be back for a third time (fourth?). Have they done their homeworks seriously enough to make it to the next level? As the addition of C. Gallant throwing third for the T. SMITH rink (PEI)sufficient enough to make them competitive in the Championship round?

Provincials playdowns coming up this week will be interesting. Who will take over from power house J.Hersikorn (Sask) and F.Asselin (QC) who have aged out after many appearances at Nationals? Ontario has been enigmatic lately. Lots of good teams but none shining at the Big Dance. This could be the year for P. Michaud to emerge. For those of you who have never seen brother Decebal sweeping, have a close look. I believe he is the most powerful sweeper, pound for pound, in the country.

If you have never been to a National Junior Championship, you are missing on a great show!

Not putting tardi in yet. Habkirk has a good shot at the upset win. That team is on a major roll and tardi hasn't looked overly convincing this week

Tardi did finish on the podium at Nationals last year. They have qualified for Tankard. They have played on the tour against the best and have won their share of games. They have to be considered one of the best junior team in the nation.

But as I said, it comes down to one game and Habrink will give it 100%. May the best team win.
