Kaitlyn may have struggled with her shots in the first half of the SF but she still contributed big time with her sweeping and calling shots and lines and keeping JohnnyMo calm and productive. And then this tiny little girl picked up the team on her shoulders and carried them home with some incredible shots and sweeping. And I hope 'those folks' are enjoying their pie. :D

Congratualtions John and Kaitlyn.

After watching this event, my respect for John has gone way up.

Maybe I missed something because my sound had to be muted watching early in the morning, but why did they get stuffed animals and not medals? Are they doing an actual medal ceremony at some point?

Yes, medals at special time and location towards end of day. Stuffed toy in lieu of the traditional flowers.

The international broadcasters said that there's a separate Medal Plaza where they're doing the medal ceremonies at a later time. Tomorrow, I think. And I think it's being used for most events.

iirc, Sochi had a similar set-up.

And frankly, it's a terrible idea. Ruins the immediacy of the moment and gives way too much time for the shock/emotions to fade.

Good on Lawes for her demeanor. Good on Morris for his restraint. Haha. So Glad for them both.

I think the "free agent" story is because Lawes/Kennedy actually didn't qualify for the mixed doubles Olympic trials - not enough points. Morris/Homan did, so it was Morris who was looking for a player at the trials.

This is where their Olympic experience came into play. Even when Switzerland was looking pretty good in 6, Morris and Lawes came through.

All of those rude comments about Kaitlyn in the SF yesterday - she played well today. And yes, I am bringing this person into play but there was a lovely photo of Kaitlyn and Jennifer on twitter yesterday. I'm sure seeing Jennifer was a boost for Kaitlyn.

Same for me. But a lot of that has to do with Kaitlyn's incredible on-ice demeanour - where she was extremely careful into not provoking John into any careless/reckless streak of consequence. In a way - Kaitlyn was the perfect teammate for John Morris.

But I go back to Jones - Kaitlyn learned a tremendous amount curling with JJ . . . . particularly how to handle a stressed out and oft out of sorts skip.

I wonder what this gold (and how it was obtained) does to Jones timeline about continuing on for another Olympic cycle?

Canada's first endeavor into the Olympic's Mixed Doubles should make Canada very proud.

From a broad Canadian prospective the really good news about their success, however, is that we have at least 4 or 5 other teams that are equally talented. Talented enough not just to compete but to win on the international stage right now!

Love to see what I'm calling a "MIXED DOUBLES BRIER" every year.

Due to shortness of games and only 5 rocks per game I could envisage 20 teams - 11 or 12 representing each province or territory plus TOP 7 or 8 invites.

Could be an interesting, fan-friendly and promotable event that could easily draw 800 to 1500 per draw - perhaps 2,000 or more to semi-finals and finals.

Perhaps Jeff Stoughton should start advocating this - on the cusp of Lawes & Morris bringing such attention to this alternative curling sport.

Congrats to John and Kaitlyn on their gold medal. So proud of them. Also, congrats to Jeff Stoughton for his direction. Congrats also to Teams Switz and OAR. Up early this a.m. to watch this game and enjoyed it completely. Looking forward to the medal presentation.

I wonder if they get to stay and watch the rest of the Olympics now or if you get kicked out of the village once your event is over.

Great late in career reward for Jeff Stoughton after a great curling career.

Jeff had some dire medical problems last year - and was touch 'n go for awhile.

The perfect person to lead the mixed D program. At one point in his storied career Jeff was an egotistical self-serving skip - possibly the best individual curler on the planet.

But a ton of braggadocio - not quite Trump levels but harsh for the curling community. Always had different players during his various Brier wins, 11 or 12 Manitoba titles. Until Little Jon Mead showed up he really had to cobble together teams of open weaknesses.

Had the one big run at an Olympic trials but fell to young Brad Gushue, who had Russ Howard come aboard as Goo's Brain. That said, Stoughton was 1/2 to an inch away from representing Canada.

Great career. Great guy. Don't think coaches get medals, do they?

Jeff lost to the Russ Howard rink which had Gushue throwing last rock.

Umm they already have that each year...its called the Mixed Doubles Curling Championship and has about 24 teams...maybe it will get a big title sponsor now.

This year, the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championships is at the end of March in Leduc Alberta: http://www.curling.ca/blog/2017/03/...nships-in-2018/
The winner goes to Oestersund Sweden third week for April for the 2018 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships. I do hope the get a title sponsor. Mixed Drinks? Mixed Tapes? Doubles? Lots of tie-ins.

Nothing new about Kate crumbing like a house of cards when the real pressure is on. She has always been that way which is why I don't know why Jones keeps her. She looks like a deer in the headlights when the heats on. Give Johnny Mo the credit for keeping them in the game and handing Kate. I really hope Jones keeps the new kid and hands Kate her walking papers.

Russian Bronze Medalist flunks drug test

The male half of the Russian mixed doubles pair that won bronze has tested positive for meldonium. It's the same formerly-legal-now-it-isn't drug that got Maria Sharapova suspended from tennis a few years ago.

if its a heart drug that was ok til 2016 , knowing nothing else about this case ,

it would seem unfair to take a medal away from him ...

i say this even though i quite liked the Norway team

my deepening dislike for the olympics lends me to believe that the morons that took 45 months to ban the Russians in December 2017 - before reversing it in January ( partially ) are perfectly capable of screwing this up too
