Team Erika Brown hanging it up

From the team's Facebook page:

"We wanted to reach out to our family and friends to let everyone know that we, Team E Brown, have decided not to play competitively next year. Collectively we know what it takes to play at an elite level. Finding a balance between our competitive expectations of being medal contenders and our priorities and passions off the ice was no longer possible. We are looking forward to spending more time with our young families!

We love to curl, to complete, and we especially loved to play together; it is not often you get to do something you love with your best friends! We were proud to be Team USA in our last season together. We achieved many of our goals and we could not have done it without our vast support network.

We want to take this chance to say thank you. Thank you to our families. It takes a village to cover a curling season as you all know. We recognize the sacrifices you have made for us to curl at this level and we want you to know how much we have always appreciated it. To our friends and fans, thank you for all of the support and words of encouragement, it has made a big difference along the way. Finally, thank you to our sponsors - TDS Telecom, Korbel, Sanford Health, Balance Plus and TRIA Orthopaedic. Your ongoing support has been invaluable."

That sound you heard was the collective sigh of relief from the HP Program.

Rumor I heard was that just Erika and Natalie were retiring. Nicole and Allison are going to keep playing.

You know how rumors go though...

So what you're saying is HPP is causing Team USA to lose over 80 combined years of curling experience...

Methinks the "youth movement" might be going a little over the top...

why is it realistic? they were still in the top 20, coming off one of their best years together and , as i said by far the best team in the country.

i respect their decision but im puzzled by your statement that because the average age of the team was 40 it was a realistic move. there are teams who played into their 40's and still got good results. norberg, howard, martin, stoughton, ott and the list goes on

Sorry we won't get to see more of them next year, but hope they enjoy themselves and don't have any regrets.

Without any insight other than their statement I'm not going to pile on the HPP. Team Brown earned their way this year without being part of the program and were capable of continuing to do so.

Now it's time to look forward to the next season and watch what teams step up to fill the void they are leaving behind. And don't think the HPP is relieved, because to keep from an overall decline in results for USA Curling an HPP team is going to be expected to meet or exceed Team Brown's performance next season.

From what I have heard, Erika is done for good and Natalie is close behind. Allison and Nicole will keep playing but women's is off the map for a while. You might see them pop up in doubles or mixed perhaps.

It's also my understanding that the team never applied to get into HP, and were also never invited.
