Rule question

From rule book
(a) A! team! that! commences!a!game!with! three! players!and!expects! the! fourth! player! to!
join! the! team,! the! fourth!player!may enter!an!end!already!in!progress!providing! they!

blished!delivery!rotation.!Prior!to!the!
next!end,!the!team!may!reRestablish!the!delivery!r
otation.

Sorry cut and paste did not work. Interpretation ? if a lead is late and the second has already thrown first lead stone, can the lead throw second lead stone? Big in club argument today and no official officials around.

no the lead cant toss the seconds stones. because his stones have been tossed. he can sweep. that is all till the start of the next full end, in which he can start at his position.

Wait, in the OP, hasn't the Second only thrown one of the Lead's stones?

If so, then the Lead could still throw a stone in the end, and so could join play, right?

Conversely, if the Second has thrown both of the Lead's stones, can the late-arriving Lead even sweep in that end? Seems to me that he/she would not be able to "enter an end already in progress" at that point.

Of course, I stand to be corrected.

Rules Question

Actually, the lead can throw the second stone of the end, then the second would throw the next 2. The rule states that the player must be able to throw "a" stone in the rotation to join in the end. So long as there will be 2 stones for the skip, the player can throw a stone in rotation. At the beginning of the next end, the team can re establish the delivery rotation. That means the player joining in could throw the 6th stone of the end and then throw lead to start the next end as they re establish their rotation. Also, If a player does not throw a stone, then they cannot sweep till the beginning of the next end.

But the established delivery rotation has already been set by the second throwing one lead rock? If you can't throw a rock, you can't sweep.

I agree with oldtimer.

If you start with 3, the rules of play for 3 players are such that a person throws the 1st 3 rocks, the next throws the 2nd 3 rocks, then the last throws the last 2 rocks. You can never deliver more than 3 rocks per end.

A player coming into the end has to deliver a stone to be eligible to play that end (ie. sweep). So unless they are going to throw a stone that end (ie. if they are the lead and lead rocks have already been thrown and they don't want to throw rocks 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8, they can't be on the ice).

That player can throw any single rock going forward in that end, but they must throw at least one.

I've always played without the player until the next end just to avoid the confusion and possible conflict.

Guess we're just politer about our league games...we just agree between the skips before the start "Bob's gonna be late, we'll go with 3 until he gets here, if Bob shows up in the middle of the end, can he sweep the rest of that end and throw the next end?" "Sure, no problem".

Admittedly, some of that may be because our club is in one of the most notorious traffic hells in the western world...so players not making the 7:15 start time for early draw despite leaving the office at 5PM happens...a lot...

I could see someone being more of a stickler if it was a playdown or something...but at a club level, one sweeper isn't gonna be *that* much of a difference...let the guy get a little stretched out by sweeping a stone or 4.

rule 5(5)(a)of general play and 5(6)(a) for officiated play; A team that commences a game with three players and expects the fourth player to join the team, the fourth player may enter an end already in progress providing they are able to deliver a stone within the teams established delivery rotation. Prior to the next end, the team may re-establish the delivery rotation. The designation of skip and vice skip may also be changed at this time.

so you could establish the missing person at second stone, they would throw and then after the end could be switched in the rotation to lead, or providing the person could throw a lead stone enter the game and throw his/ her one stone. If they can not throw a stone they would have to wait until the next end to join in.

that being said in our stag leagues or even our club championship league we will usually let the sweep the remaining portion of that end.
