Based on Curling Canada's website, it looks like Koe wins two berths this year, with the extra spot being filled by the top 2016/17 CTRS spot not already in the Trials.

Doesn't matter. Spot comes from the 2016/17 CTRS.

There are 7 direct entries and 2 bonus spots earned by the next 12 teams. 3 teams have clinched their ticket to Ottawa: Koe on the men's side, Homan & Jones on the women's side. With one tournament where Canadian teams are involved, we'd have those teams that would right now be qualified for the pre-trials in Summerside, but not for the big thing in Ottawa. So, there's some work to do, but they want to qualify themselves through, because you have less to worry about . Still, 6 spots on the men's side not in, and one would expect that 5 of those spots would be claimed by those 6 teams. It's possible for them to have a bad year, but even there, they're so much better than the other teams, that it probably doesn't matter.

Men
McEwen (Canada Cup)
Jacobs (Best team in 2014-15 CTRS)
Gushue (Top 4 teams in 2015-16 CTRS not qualified)
Carruthers
Epping
Laycock

Women
Sweeting (Canada Cup)
Middaugh (Best team in 2014-15 CTRS not yet qualified)
Carey (Top 4 teams in 2015-16 CTRS not qualified)
Rocque
Einarson
Fleury/McCarville*

Next year's Canada Cup seems like we'll have the usual suspects, barring a team change.

Koe, Gushue, McEwen, Carruthers, Jacobs, Epping, Laycock

Homan, Jones, Sweeting, Carey, Rocque, Einarson, and a team from Northen Ontario. *

*Fleury could possibly lose her spot to McCarville if that team makes it to the final of the Champions' Cup. I say possibly, because I don't know how many CTRS points will be awarded to the winner and finalists. I didn't put Lawton in it because even if she gets in front of Fleury, she will have a new team because she's losing 2 members of her team next year, so she would probably have to forfeit her spot. On the men's side, I think it's pretty much settled, because Laycock's the last one in and the only team that could catch him is Howard and he hasn't qualified to the Champions' Cup. So, I'm putting Laycock in.

Jones has only clinched a spot in the Pre-Trials in Summerside. Don't know why anybody thinks she has an Ottawa Roar of the Rings spot yet. Read below.

That's a blog post about the process. It doesn't say what happens if a Brier/Scotties winner doesn't medal.

Here is a more complete set of rules:

http://www.curling.ca/team-canada/2...cation-process/

That's where it specifically says "If a team that wins the Scotties Tournament of Hearts or Tim Hortons Brier does not win a medal at the world championship, the berth assigned to the event winner will go to the highest non-qualified team on that season’s CTRS."

It's true Jones isn't technically in the Trials because the season isn't over, but Curling Canada said that. It doesn't say what happens if the Canadian Champion fails to medal at the World's in that qualifying process. Curling Canada however mentions how it works in that case in that article that is a week old or so.

http://www.curling.ca/blog/2016/04/...s-championship/

quote:
First the CTRS implications: When Calgary’s Chelsea Carey failed to earn a medal at the Ford World Women’s Curling Championship, she also failed to earn a direct berth to the 2017 Roar of the Rings in Ottawa. Instead, that berth will go to the highest non-qualified team on the 2015-2016 CTRS. While Ottawa’s Rachel Homan has a huge lead on the CTRS, she also previously qualified for the trials by winning the Home Hardware Canada Cup. That means we have to look at the next names on the list: Jennifer Jones (365.784), Val Sweeting (338.565), and Carey (307.013).

Winning a Grand Slam event will likely earn you more than 80 points, while just qualifying for the quarterfinals is usually in the neighbourhood of 35 points. That being said, it’s plausible that Jones or Sweeting seem poised to take a step closer to locking down that berth.
Of course, there is yet another Slam on the schedule with the Champions Cup, meaning that ticket won’t be officially punched until May 1st.

Now, the rankings after this is Jones 394.102, Sweeting second with 340.161 and Carey at 308.312. Let's say Sweeting wins the Champion's Cup and Jones fails to qualify. Sweeting's 8th result is 21.3675. So, if she wins she would need to get 75.3086 points to pass Jones and Muirhead got 76.8075 at the Player's. But the players' had those teams in OOM. Top 7, 9, 11, 12, 17, 19. Champions' Cup will have right now. Top 5, 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 22, 27, 30, 70. Looking at the top OOM Points won in a tournament, the other slams and the Canada Cup had those numbers. But here's the problem, the other slams never had more than one team outside the top 25. This one has currently 3 (Fay Harrison & McCarville). I don't think that she would get the 75.3086 if she wins. Hence Jones gaining that spot.

OK, I'll buy everything the above two posts cleared up for me.

I find it curious that Koe won "two" spots this year so that means an extra CTRS 2016-17 men's team gets in but the fact Carey came in fourth doesn't mean an extra CTRS 2016-17 woman's team gets in (which was my assumption). For some reason Curling Canada decided this year's CTRS team should get Carey's spot which makes less sense to me on the surface. (Or at least I don't understand why the Koe's extra spot is decided differently from Carey's missing spot.) To me it would make more sense to include "hotter" teams from the 2016-17 season. Either way I know Jones would have made it into the Roar anyways but I was confused to say the least and am happy to be corrected by the above posts.

Despite the greatness of Jones - and Muirhead being 2 down without hammer - Eve never gave up - she put JJ in her cross-hairs and executed a brilliant triple and roll on her last stone to magically lie 3 stones (all full four or biting 4) and forced Jones to draw the lid cold. It was one of the most brilliant games of the tournament - and in my mind the greatest women's curling game ever played. The sight of Princess Eve calmly telling an agonized Anna Sloan that "I've Got This" while Jones was in the hack preparing to toss her final draw said it all. Muirhead had set an incredible booby trap for Jones, Jones fell in it asshammer over asshammer and still managed to make her final shot for gold - facing total medal eliminaton!
