Cheese food product music video

Thoughts on this new video?

Here's a few. I always enjoy seeing Vernon Davis since I saw him first try curling many years ago in San Jose. He is a true gentleman and lots of fun, too.

Matt H. can dance!

Should we soon expect at all US curling clubs a cardboard Throne of Brooms for photo ops at learn-to-curls? Or maybe a print at our cost selfie backdrop plastered with cheesey product logos and that cat with a Scottish accent?

How much income are any curlers getting for this video appearance? I hope a lot. Or is this just one of the things one must do for free when one signs adhesion contracts with USCA and USOC?

I plan to live long enough to see these sorts of cheese food products be treated like cigarettes for TV ads.

They shot this at the ice facility just outside our club.

The club made some money for renting our equipment to them, and providing some folks to act as technical advisors. (I believe they got paid as well)

Frankly, I don't like it. I don't particularly like the entire cheese related snack product promotion, and I think the USCA chose poorly signing on with it.

But....money...

Seriously Allen? You have been calling for sponsorships and an American tour, yada, yada for years! And now a big company steps up and you don't approve? Wow.

I think it's a big step and I hope it opens the doors for more.

There's a difference between supporting the game and, frankly, making fun of it as a snide poke "Hey, look at the squares who think this is a sport" to the hipsters.

This commercial doesn't celebrate the sport, nor does it celebrate the curlers...it makes fun of our team.

This kind of "love" we don't need.

Is it suppose to celebrate curlers and the sport? It's the first major ad they have done. Maybe, just maybe they are trying to make it a little more hip, a little more attractive for younger crowds. I thought the production was great and Matt was a good choice. Why would we judge their entire campaign on the first fun video? Don't you think the ad agency and the marketing group of this company has a strategy that was cleared by the Usca and they are protecting the brand?

Face it, we love the sport but most people think it's quirky at best and not a sport at worst.

I guess they could have just shown me and my old buddies throwing a few back after Wednesday league. That would honor the sport.

I'm not judging the campaign based on the first video, I'm basing it on the following:

1. Curling already has a problem with being perceived as a sport for non-athletic athletes, even at the elite level. Yet we are hanging our star on Junk Food? Really? How does this help our sport's image?

2. The entire launch of Cheeto's announcement of the sponsorship was all about "We picked a sport that no one plays, and we're going to fix that"...makes us sound like we're nonexistent. Umm...no...we're an Olympic Level sport, with an international professional tour, and an increasing number of clubs opening in the US every year. We get high ratings every time we're on TV. We aren't desperately grasping for attention.

3. The entire Hip-Hop "Hey, let's celebrate the sport with loud music and (awful) dance moves" feels like it comes straight from the minds that brought us the Mixed Doubles 30 Second Shot Clock debacle which embarrassed the sport back at the Continental Cup a couple years back.

4. That video used curling as a joke. One of our Olympic Athletes was derided for not celebrating a shot with enough flair. Umm...when last I checked, the Spirit of Curling document says right in it that you shouldn't rub your opponent's nose in your wins with excessive celebrations...a choreographed dance move...yeah...that's the very definition of excessive celebration.

5. "Do The Curl"? Come on...really?

6. I can't say why I know this, but this commercial isn't alone in "Hey, let's poke fun at curling, it isn't a real sport" from major companies. And it disgusts me that we're letting them do it. I've heard through the grapevine that one effort along these lines may have been ended, but the trend discourages me.

This campaign is an attempt by Frito Lay to make money at the expense of the USCA. Yeah, maybe the USCA got a taste (at least, I sure hope they did, although I don't see our dues going down or any announcement of any new programs as a result of this sponsorship), but this isn't elevating our sport, this is diminishing it.

And yeah, maybe that makes me a curmudgeon, but I'm not going to sing the praises of something destructive. There *is* such a thing as bad publicity, and this is it.

I don't love the commercial, but I love the few months every 4 years when people pay attention to our wonderful sport.

With 1/100 of 0ne percent of the USA population curling, picking a sport that "no one plays" isn't far off statistically.

Junk food and soda along with beer dominate sports broadcasts, you think were going to get Cadillac or Lexus?

There is no such thing as bad publicity. Anything that drives viewers to the TV and folks to learn to curl events is a plus.

Are you looking for something more on the line of Puppymonkeybaby?

Even Tuck agrees.

I would have been fine with damned near any product that didn't feature a smartaleck Cheetah who makes fun of the subject of his commercials as the "mascot".

For that matter, Cheetos could have done a respectful commercial.

They chose not to.

And, it appears, so much for the concept of this being a "major ad campaign"...

Today is the fifth day of the Olympics, and I have not seen a single cheetos ad of any sort...nor have any of my friends who I've polled.

Did they pull the plug? Are they planning on a huge week 2 buy? Who knows?

You seem to be confusing sponsorship with advertising.

They aren't the same thing.

Just an FYI.

That video hasn't gone viral as Frito-Lay, Inc and USCA, Inc. had hoped. The tune was not memorable and the snarky-ness against nice curlers didn't trigger the good vibes needed for a video to go viral. Not one (? so far) do-it-yourself knockoff such as the "Call Me Maybe" for the London Olympics by the US swimmers or the multiple ones from Pharrell Williams' "Happy".

I'd rather see photos of new learn-to-curlers set to "Happy" than that cheese product music video ever again or see Olympian curlers and their families one-up-ing the North Korean cheerleaders as spectators in the stands.

Fun to see on Facebook what curling clubs are doing to promote the sport. Hollywood has some fun graphics for Valentine's Day.

Hey Fritos: Mr. T has had more viral impact on curling than your music video has had. Hmm... what was the theme song to his "A Team" TV show?

Saw today a TV commercial for the new Disney "Incredibles" cartoon with Jack-Jack slicing a curling stone in half with his laser vision. Have yet to see a Cheetos commercial in the Olympics.

Do "we" really need Frito-Lay's help to promote our sport?
