Cheryl Bernard Addition to Homan Team

I just read on Twitter that Cheryl Bernard will be joining Team Homan as their alternate player at the Olympics in S. Korea. This is really good news. Her experience at the Olympics will be a benefit to the Homan Team.
What a great addition.

I sure hope their original alternate is not too crushed. Kind of sucks for her.

Hmm...was this CCA mandated? The other alternate did fine for them at the worlds. What if Cheryl has to play front end? Let's see who is selected for Koe! Does he get to keep Scott or will he be saddled with a CCA selection?

Sheer brillance? What kind of MJ do you have out there in MB? It is bordering on the hallucinogenic.

IF THIS IS TRUE it begs the question who replaces her on TSN? Jennifer Jones?

ML? And go.

Just read this on twitter. Thought I'd send it out there. This was posted by Team Homan.

Huge thanks to Cheryl Kreviazuk for her support at the Roar and at Scotties and Worlds. Alternate players had to meet certain criteria for Olympic selection and although Cheryl didn’t meet that, we love her for all her support! ❤️

Curling Canada

Anyone know where this "criteria" is posted on the Curling Canada website? And what is it? I can't seem to find it. What a terrible way to upset the "team" dynamic as they head to the Olympics.

On a side note, what is the "criteria" that allows a Curling Canada member to attend the Olympics all expenses paid on our behalf?

Whatever the criteria for choosing a 5th player is, I'm sure the Homan team believes Cheryl Bernard is the best choice. You have to prepare for the slim chance that Homan herself might need to be replaced. Replacing a front ender will be less significant that the last rock thrower. Having said that, I am surprised that current skips weren't chosen. Possibly work commitments, personality issues or other factors must have contributed to the decision. I find it hard to believe that a current, suitable 5th player couldn't be selected.

Curling Canada really screwed up here. People talk on and on and on about how chemistry is so important on a team with a fifth player.

Cheryl K. throws the rock just like the other members of Team Homan as she practices with them. She knows the team dynamics as well and all the personalities.

Cheryl B. Does not release the rock the same way at all (doubtful either 5th would have been pushed into service) but more importantly has zero history or chemistry with the team. I have no doubt curling Canada gave Homan a list of suitable candidates and they picked one from the list. Really short sighted.

As for Team Koe, Scott P. Is a three time world champion as a member of Team Ferbey and got another as a 5th. He is their defectors coach on timeouts and no doubt passes whatever criteria Curling Canada had.

Cheryl Kreviazuk, like her other two sisters, is strictly a Front End player.

Should she have qualified as an Olympic alternate she - and not Bernard - would have been the team's first and only choice.

And should it have become necessary for her to replace a team member who was unable to play, she would have been parachuted into the lineup in the Lead or Second position only. The same for Bernard. Should she join the team on the ice for any reason, it will be as Lead or Second.

The plan is straightforward: If Weagle can't play, Bernard will play the Lead position; If Courtney cannot play, Bernard will play Second; if Miskew can't play, Bernard will play Second and Courtney will Vice. And if Homan can't play, Bernard will play second and Courtney will Skip.

To entertain the thought of bringing in an 'established' skip to replace Homan would be inviting disaster with a capital "D". That skip would not know how to "ice" any, repeat any, of the existing team members. She would soon wish she had never left Canada.

The Euro and Asian teams juggle players in a tournament all the time. I'm rather surprised at the choice of alternate. Jones took Kirsten Wall - who had been sparing for them at Skip. That did not change after they won the trials. Cheryl is up there in age - although in great shape. But suppose she has to sweep for a couple of games - very different from skipping. I too would love to know the criteria. Pfeiffer is still the Koe 5th - has he skipped before?

There's absolutely no reason to believe, Curlerbroad, that either Homan or Koe will be required to use their alternate at any time during the Olympics, except perhaps to carry the luggage now and then.

But if you think there could be a problem with Bernard having to play 2 or 3 games in succession, that's nothing compared to what will happen to Koe's team should he need a few days off.

Hebert has never skipped, nor has Kennedy, nor has Pfeiffer. Laing did give it a try back around 2003 or so but he quickly found out this was not his forte. Subsequently he became part of Howard & Co.

So talk about potential trouble!

I was just about to post the same article from CBC. Just read it on twitter. Perhaps this, hopefully, will put some of the doubters minds at rest. Lets hope. I think Cheryl will be a great benefit.

Another more practical reason is that most of the top women curlers are busy qualifying for the Scotties. If they chose someone and that person made it to the National Scotties, then they would have had to choose someone else.
