One cool thing about the world mixed doubles is all the countries competing. What other international team competition can say they have 32 different nations at the final stage? It's also a great chance for countries who aren't "curling nations" to bring the game exposure (such as Brazil, Spain, or Estonia)

so 4 countries have qualified directly for the QF:

Russia
Switzerland
Norway
Sweden

these countries are either qualified for the playoff to determine the other 4 quarterfinalists:

Hungary
Canada
Czech Republic
Australia
Spain
China

These countries are in contention to get to the playoffs. They should get there but things could still get complicated for them:

Korea (win and they are in)
Austria ( they need to win and need Korea to lose and then those 2 will play a tiebreaker to determine 3rd in the group)

Scotland(win and their in)
Finland(need to beat Canada and have Scotland lose and they will play a tiebreaker to determine 3rd in the group)

so apparently everything's been decided

the playoffs look like this:

hungary v.s Scotland
Canada v.s autria
Czech republic v.s china
spain v.s Australia

the 4 winners move on to the QF and join Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and norway

Qualification scores:

Hungary 7 Scotland 5
Austria 7 Canada 6
Spain 7 Australia 6
Czech republic 6 China 5

so the Quarterfinals look like this:

Hungary v.s Norway
Austria v.s Switzerland
Spain v.s Russia
Czech republic v.s Sweden

european domination at the event continues

should be noted that all 3 teams the medaled last year (Hungary, sweden, czech republic) are still alive and could all be on the podium again this year .

interesting to note that as of now 3 of the 4 teams that got a bye to the quarters are losing at the half way mark

well 2 of the teams that got byes turned things around. russia lost on an extra end steal

so the final 4 are:

Spain
Hungary
Sweden
Switzerland

semi finals go like this:

Switzerland v.s Hungary
Sweden v.s Spain

Of these 4 the only team that really surprises me in terms of being there is Switzerland. This team didn't look that strong to me going in but they are obviously better than i gave them credit for. It doesnt seem to matter who the suisse send in this discipline they are always there in the end.

I think were heading toward a rematch of last years final which would be Sweden v.s Hungary. Those 2 teams have looked to be the class of the field all week.

Semi-finals are actually:

Sweden v. Hungary
Switzerland v. Spain

Semi-finals are determined by a draw out of the hat....kind of random

Both semis played at 10:15 BST

Cheers,
Ray

are you serious? that is absurdly stupid. There is a draw sheet all drawn out on the main page too that makes it seem like the semis i thought were happening.

Well in that case i predict a sweden v.s switzerland final

spain v,s hungary in the bronze medal game

although personally id like to see hungary win the whole thing again. I think they got a few fortunate breaks in the final last year or sweden would have won and the swedes look bound and determined to go one better this year. Though if anyone's going to stop them Hungary is the team with the best chance of it

It sucks though that the 2 best teams there are meeting in the semis.

Misty, agree with you. Don't get it.

Check out page 40. There is nothing in the rules about this event with more than 30+ teams. I can only think that the "re-seeding" of the semis is to address the scenario that there are 2 teams who were seeded #1 in pool play who advanced, so they would be on opposite sides of the draw. Or I defer to guycan who said it was "out of the hat". Either way, where is it written down? The WCF rules address 21-30 teams, but with 34 teams here perhaps they are making up the rules on the fly.

The most egregious thing with the "rules" is the Pool A final results with Austria and Korea. These teams finished tied for 3rd place, BUT, Austria was given the spot in the #2 vs #3 seed qualifier based on head to head. This conflicts with section C9 rule (a) which we all know is this...

"A team tied for a place in the play-offs is not eliminated in any way other than by losing an extra game"

This rules is why curling has tie-breaker games. But this "rule" doesn't apply to the Mixed Doubles? Again, no problem if it doesn't apply, but where is it written down?

congrats to switzerland. They really are the best in the world at this discipline. I never picked this particular team as title threats but good for them

sweden finished runner up again

i really cant think of a country that has lost so many big finals (not just here) as sweden.

and a huge congrats to spain on their first ever curling medal..even if it comes at the expense of my favored hungarians.

Looks like the Swiss are a country to be taken very seriously, judging by their performances at the Women's, Men's, and Mixed Doubles World Championships this year.
They're obviously doing something right over there.
