Worst kept secret in curling. Now we'll have 8 teams forced to play a 2nd, meaningless round and some of those in the consolation group will compile a better overall won-loss record than a team in the championship group which makes the playoff-unless they follow the silly format of the Jr's and Sr's playing only against the crossover teams from the other group.

We ready have a simple, inclusive championship open to all that has, as proven historically, consistently produced world champions and medalists. We are fixing something not broken and doing it, quite likely, just to appease a few with their own self interests and not that of the game.

Also pretty tacky to release the news on Father's Day to avoid attracting attention to an idea in huge disfavor with the majority of the curling population.

I have ranted so many times about this. So wrong for many reasons. Summer is here and I'll choose to ignore curling Canada as they ignore me, lol. Go out enjoy the sun.

Happy Father's Day.

It's all about the money. To get the most funding from sport canada they must include everyone. It will ruin the game and quickly. It will become another Slam event except now Nunavut will get crushed seven times instead of three times.

Thumbs down

Atleast for the Mens teams, the only teams who are going to benefit from this are Epping, Howard, McEwen, Koe, Bottcher and Carruthers who are all touring almost full time. I still think getting rid of Northern Ontario and combining the Territories into one spot is the best way to go at it.

Yep, Fathers Day is always big news... that's why nobody schedules anything on Fathers Day like the US Open or NBA finals game 7.

Brilliant timing to make sure nobody notices this.

I think its strange that the CTRS team is named after the provincial playdowns. would make more sense to do it before? Now the Nr 1 in the CTRS is gonna play the provincial, but theyre gonna be guaranteed a spot in the brier anyways?

ALso wonder what the name of the CTRS team is gonna be? Team CTRS? Team canada 2?

What a JOKE!

Until last season they could have just called this spot team McEwen.

Whats next? All teams are picked from CTRS points? Just make it another slam event already and save us a couple years. That seems to be the way its going.

Sure seems like they really are trying to narrow the gap between the big teams and the tier 2 teams. Its not all about money. (HA!)

Again, what a JOKE!

If I'm Northern Alberta or some other Association within a province I'm lobbying to get my own berth in the Brier. Can we get it to 24 teams

Well ..i have to say this really pisses me off and i dont know if i will be watching this sport in a few short years. just pure stupidity. Just undermines what the events are about by allowing teams a bye based off their crts standings. even the canada team at one point earned their name. Its a joke. just sad that its gotten to this point.

Well sadly its all about money and results at this point. as its been said they are toying with something thats not broken . only problem is they arent making it any better they are just destroying it. who really is going to want to watch any of those games in the 2nd tier pool? moreover who is going to want to play them

they just dont care. like you said ,it seems like, soon enough all teams will be decided by crts standings. possibly within the next 10-15 years they'll go that route. and then registration and interest will plummit.

well done to the cca. bunch of idiots and cowards. probably the worst governing organization in sport today..after football.

two things:

there won't be any 2nd tier pool games. those teams go home if they don't make the championship pool.

the cca doesn't entirely make the decisions on the Brier, Scotties, etc. The member associations hold the majority of the voting power, so blame your province or territory... they voted this in.

Except for the fact that they basically sway half the votes their way by giving the bubble provinces the option voting against the motion and being in a position of relegation or voting the way the Curling Canada board wants and getting an automatic berth into the events.

I also find it interesting that a lot of the people that were involved in the coup detat gainst the OCA have now been rewarded by Curling Canada.

Yo, numbnuts. Don't pass the buck to blame provincial reps and get your facts straight.

Teams that don't advance to the championship round play a second 'seeding' round and have to stay and play.

Second, this has been pushed on the CCA by forces outside and within to make our sport more like hockey and more coach controlled. Yes, that's right. There are people in the bureaucracy who want long term, paying jobs and the best way to get that is to ultimately make it so YOU no longer get to pick your teammates but THEY do.

This is about control and greed. 'Nuff said (thks Stan)

Actually you're the numbnuts dude. "Teams that don't advance to the championship round play a second 'seeding' round and have to stay and play." Sorry bud, you are WRONG. This happens in juniors, but will not be part of the Brier and Scotties.

And you are wrong again about the provincial/territorial reps share of the blame. They hold close to 3/4's of the votes. How the heck don't they shoulder the bulk of the load for this format change? Only a delirious person would try to reason otherwise!

I'm not one to defend Curling Canada... but one could also easily take the position that this more inclusive format will help the weaker teams improve, as they'll have the exposure and challenge of playing against better teams at the country's most significant event. True, the incentive to qualify for the Brier/Scotties was always there before for the weaker (northern) teams - but now, with a guaranteed spot, they will get to actually experience the event - and that can only help them improve.

Sad to see so many weak teams added to the field. Players from the north get a free pass, an all expense paid trip to the Brier/Scotties with little or any playdowns to speak of. In some cases they will just sign up and go directly to a canadian championship.
In the past Brier/Scotties round-robin games were important and long time rivalries were interesting to watch. With the new format, first round games will be too often boring with top teams crushing teams from the north. Tradition, competition, earning your way in is pushed aside by politics. Shameful. Don't they have any pride? I predict that after being crushed a few years in a row certain northen associations won't even field a team.
