Junior Nationals in Victoria

The junior nationals are fast approaching.

Who you got for medals on the men's and woman's side.

Personally, I think Tanner Horgan's (NO) rink has a strong chance and medaling again. He looking to improve on his silver medal from last year losing to Matt Dunstone. With that team not there this year. I think the crew from Sudbury will be a force to be reckoned with.

I have not followed much of the girls provincial play downs. Although I think Team Clarke (NS) will be looking to repeat.

Broadcasting note: CurlingGeek will have coverage of several sheets all week long. At the moment we have parents for the AB & NL women. I strongly suspect Team Tardi from BC will also be covered.

For the men, I think the two frontrunners should be Tanner Horgan of Northern Ontario and Tyler Tardi of BC. Several quality teams at last year's Juniors failed to make it out of their respective provinces this year, most notably Calvert of Manitoba and Sturmay in Alberta. Mat Hall of Ontario should also be in the mix at the end of the week.

In terms of the women, there are certainly a few teams with plenty of potential at this year's juniors. Certainly the two names that stand out are Kristin Clarke of Nova Scotia as well at Corryn Brown of BC. Expect these two teams to be around at the end of the week. Manitoba always sends a strong representative and this year is no exception with a Burtnyk at the helm. Alberta seems to send quality teams as well. Much like the men, favorites last season such as Laurie St-Georges of Quebec and Justine Comeau of New Brunswick failed to make it out of their provinces so whoever gets hot by the end of the week could certainly make a push for the playoffs.

My predictions, for the men:
Tardi (BC) def. Hall (ON) in the semifinal
Horgan (NO) def. Tardi (BC) in the final.

For the women:
Brown (BC) def. Burtnyk (MB) in the semifinal
Clarke (NS) def. Brown (BC) in the final.

I like the picks. I'll go for Colton Goller (AB) instead of Hall (ON).

For the finals, 2.00$ on Tyler Tardi and Corryn Brown.

Agree with who will be in the playoffs but I will go with tardi over Horgan in the men's final and brown over clarke

Yukon did not send a U-21 team to the event

What If?

If any province or territory does not send a team to a junior national event, let the host province or territory have their runner up as a 2nd team? Great for local support and attendance.
Or is that just another can of worms?

That's another can of worms. The pool seedings are done based on the teams assigned to the pools - you can't add in a team that doesn't match the appropriate seeding.

Ontario women win gold and BC men win gold. That's my guess.

something weird going on with the standings on the curling.ca website. in the championship pool the mens standings are reset to only show how they pefmormed against other teams in the pool

however the womens standings have the win-loss record for all the games they played

They had to do that because of Yukon not sending a team in the mens. Results and carry-over in a pool of 6 teams and another pool of 7 teams is impossible. Normally at Junior Nationals, all games are carried forward to the championship or seeding pool so they have kept that system in place for the girls.

I would argue how they did the men's championship pool is the only CORRECT way to do it. That's the way most other sports run when you go from one pool to another, carry over ONLY the games already played against teams in the pool. Apples to apples. I actually hate the way curling canada carries over ALL the games as they did for the women's pool this year.

Well they are juniors, they have probably not been on tv before. Some people are always so critical.

Not enough curling on, boring curling on, terrible announcers.

A true fan will sit back and just enjoy!

Too bad Glenn couldnt have got a spare so that Rich could stay for the finals. That Ontario coach seemed useless, during the EE timeout, they couldn't even find him & the guy showed up for the last 20 seconds
