Curling fans care less and less each year. This event is hardly even on their radar. Long-time curlers have been turned off by USCA and HP. Newer curlers have never gotten interested.

Hard to care after watching the afternoon game on Four Seasons TESN. The caliber of play in the women's field is pretty poor.

Hard to excited to get about a system that does not send an national champion to the worlds.

Agree that they system has turned off lots of veteran curlers and it has kept new curlers from getting interested at all.

I'd be thrilled to watch -- an editor with whom I worked is the lead on the Findlay team. But I don't get much from the TESN feed, and we've got Olympic trials in other sports this weekend.

I'll happily watch nationals. I don't care if the winner goes to Worlds. It's a national championship. You don't hear us Georgia fans complaining that the winner of Monday's football game doesn't go to Worlds.

On the other hand, non-HP curlers treat it like UCF, where they can't get the prize even if they win.

So why bother playing?

Just a heads up. there is no worlds to go to. But go Dawgs!

Most curlers who might be interested in nationals remember when winning meant a trip to the worlds... and they liked it that way.

Should be this week or next.

Not at all sure who they're gonna pick, either. All of the "usual suspects" have qualified, one way or the other, at least on the Women's side.

Are they still limited that they *must* pick teams that at least attempted to qualify (ie they have to pick teams that did not qualify at Playins)?

If so, the logical pick on the Women's side would be Team Findlay, since they are the team in the first non-qualifying spot, and they defeated team Birr in the only head to head they played. But, I would expect Midwest bias to result in a Birr pick regardless.

On the Men's side, I kinda expect Stopera. They came close to making the cut, and they have enough cred to get picked.

Still a lousy system though.

USCA news piece about the qualifiers noted that 2 entrants had withdrawn, but that they were still eligible to be discretionary picks. Since there is not strong woman's team left, my guess is that they pick Farrell [?] who signed up but later withdrew.

Agree that Stopera is likely mens pick.

Strongly agree that this is still a lousy system.

Misinformed

You all must not be paying attention. This year the rules have been relaxed to allow any team with at least 40 points or be in the Top 75 of the WCT OOM one year or two year list to be eligible for the World Championship. It likely will not stay this way but there was much more to play for this year. And, just to note, enough of the Mid-West bias jabs! We've settled that argument years ago.

And there's your problem.

After years of being told "You aren't good enough to represent the US", teams are being expected to flock back to the competition after being told "well, okay, we'll let the scrubs go to Worlds if they win this year, but only because it doesn't matter"

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Right To Play.

Observations…
1. Women’s competitive curling is DEAD in the USA. Just think of all the names that are missing from this year’s National competition. Women's Nationals might be a farce this year...
2. I’ll say it for the 100th time! The fear of the longshot winning Nationals and flopping at Worlds is a MYTH. Name the last longshot (she wasn't) that won? Hmmm… Nina Spatola/Roth in 2015? Oh wait! Isn’t she the Olympic skip this year?
3. The HP men’s and women’s teams are doing better on the WCT. But at worlds, they are both traditionally 4th to 7th place teams. They might have the odd medal showing (and I hope it’s this year at the Olympics!), but the HP Program hasn’t changed anything on the World Stage because the USA is still a 4th to 7th place finisher. So the HPP/USCA killed competitive curling in the USA to have the same outcomes at Worlds/Olympics.
4. With or without the HP Program, Shuster would likely be the Olympic team. The HP Program needs him more than he needs the HP Program (well, I'm sure it likes their money!).
5. What has the USCA and the HPP done to promote and encourage competitive curling in the USA? (I know! Gerry is gonna say something like... "they know what it's gonna take to be competitive, so they just need to go out and do it.") But honestly, if the bar is set so high that I can't compete with the money and resources that the HPP teams have, why bother?
They only need to make one change... let everyone play for the national championship! If they win they go. (YOUR HPP teams aren't going to get beat! They're good and better!) Just let other teams know the possibility exists for them. THAT'S an incentive to compete!
6. The USCA has made celebrities out of the players in the HPP, that's impressive......

I know, same old story. Sorry.

Interesting to see that they selected Farrell on the women's side and Connolly on the men's side without even announcing it.
