US is hosting, and therefore automatically in for 2018. Canada's the 'vulnerable' country for that one year.

Excellent, I hope Brazil does challenge. Having Canada play in this challenge might wake people up to the current unfairness in the Zone's. It might have made sense a long time ago but with the rise of curling in Asia it is time to at least have a look at how teams qualify for the world's.

Would be fun to see how Curling Cananda would select the team to play against Brazil since the challenge happens well before the Brier...guessing it would be "Team Canada", ie. Koe.

Hey Monticello...were you the alternate in 2015 ?

FYI: There are 54 members of the WCF. You can see the current rankings here. Note that the Swiss moved ahead of Canada on the women's side due to recent results.

Serbia....curling passion .and no ice to play on..

quote:
Mother and son Mixed Doubles pair, Dara Gravara Stojanovic and Filip Stojanovic, explain that 2016 marks a ten-year celebration of curling in Serbia, where the interest in the sport is growing.

“In Serbia] we have more than 350 official curlers, and 20-30 active curlers,” said Dara.

Dara, the Vice President of the National Curling Association and the President of the Belgrade Curling Association, explains that they have
no ice to practice on in Serbia, but they find ways to continue playing.

“We made a sheet of ice under a tent in front of a shopping center,” Filip said.

His mother [Dara] added: “In less than two months, more than 2000 people tried to play curling, which tells us people are interested.”

To practice, the team travels twice a year to meet with coach, and Olympian, Camilla Skaarberg Jensen – who won Silver at the World Women’s Curling Championship 2007, in Aomori, Japan – in Copenhagen, Denmark for intensive training sessions.

The pair hopes to one day have ice in Serbia and they claim that competing at the World Mixed Doubles Championship is a stepping stone to achieving that for their country.

Serbia also demonstrated their curling ambitions by hosting the World Curling Federation Congress in Belgrade, Serbia in September 2015, which put curling in Serbia on the map for the first time.

They *can't* do a "promotion/relegation" system yet, for several reasons...

1. The event (as a Worlds, at least) is still too new to have a history on what nations should start at the top and who should start lower

2. A good chunk of the goal of the event is to encourage new nations to get into the game...it's a lot easier to encourage them by letting teams try their luck than it is to say "Hey...welcome to the club, you're in eastern zone 5...enjoy that"

3. It's Mixed Doubles, no one is really *good* at it yet, everyone is figuring it out...hell, the *RULES* are still experimental (remember the CC timing debacle?)

Once things settle out a bit, then there'll likely be a consolidation...I personally think the top 24 teams at Worlds is appropriate *for this event*, as it keeps the athlete count on parity with Men's and Womens (48 on both if you don't count alternates, which aren't an option in mixed)

And the team that got blown out this year may be the team that beats you next year...that has a way of happening...

I was thinking 24 would be a solid number for a top-tier event. Maybe 12 teams get byes to that event while others play in qualifiers.

(Yes, I know, I'm changing my position from the Davis Cup pro/rel system to a World Cup qualification system, but I figure we're still talking about teams just playing one regional event each year and then Worlds if they advance. So it's still not as time-consuming as the World Cup.)

I kinda like (some aspects of) the way Cricket does it for their World Championship (in one format of the game at least).

Admittedly, they have it every 4 years, so they have more time...but...

At the start of the cycle, every nation that enters has a *chance* to be World Champion.

Teams are sorted into "leagues" depending upon their performance...Cricket has World through League 5...curling would likely only have 3...maybe 4...depending on the size desired for each league.

The Cycle begins with each league playing a tournament. The winners of those tournaments advance to the next league up, the last place teams go down (some leagues promote/relegate 2...the principle holds).

So a traditional promotion/relegation model.

However, there are enough cycles between World Championships that even a team in the 5th division could, conceivably, make it to the Worlds this year. They'd have to win advancement in every tournament consecutively...but it's *possible* (not bloody *likely*...the record for advancements in one cycle is 2 levels, IIRC)

What I *dont'* like about Cricket's model is they protect the top 10 teams, to the point that they are protected from relegation...they get free passes...forever...*that* is a model we need to not follow.

Right -- in a way, it's a hybrid between pro/rel and qualifications. Something like that could work here, though we'd probably want no more than three tiers so we can have a Group A World Championship more often than every four years!

I'm sure it's not a popular opinion but if a country doesn't have a bloody sheet of ice I don't think they are ready to compete at a World's.

Cart before the horse for sure IMHO.

feel for turkey.they played a great 8th and had a shot to win but the thrower was wide and rolled out.

thats a country that hasnt been in the sport long but is developing fast. might not be long before they break through and get to a worlds from euros.

The author has nothing to do with this. Curling is a family-run business in Serbia and it won't get anywhere anytime soon.

And Hungary goes down in the round of 16.

A couple upsets, I'd say, with Estonia winning and Scotland over Hungary....

The loss puts the Canadians into the bracket for 5th-8th place. So, the answer is still "depends on how they finish out and how they do next year", but looks more likely than not.
