13 teams at world championship now

So Asia is getting a 3rd slot from now on. (I believe I predicted this in a thread last year). Also six teams now make the playoffs with first and second getting a bye into the semi's while third through six play to get to semi's.

This was always going to happen for sure.

Also motions to change the insane mixed doubles world championship format were voted down. Sadly no surprise there.

This is the one of stuff you want to believe is a really early or really late April fool's joke. I'm fine with the addition of a third team from Asia/Pacific but 6 team playoffs and all that other crap? No.

No surprise really.

More teams in Worlds, giving the berth to Asia = more opportunity for the Asian market, which is where the growth potential and therefore money is.

More teams in the Playoffs = more "important" games, both in the last couple of draws of the Round Robin and in the playoffs (5 playoff games with meaning rather than 4...I'm discounting any 3rd place games).

I'm not sure that a bye is really a better reward for the 1st and 2nd place teams vs the "You can lose your first game and still have a chance at the final" of the Page format...but it ain't my call to make.

It's not a dumb idea, from a marketing and money perspective.

The biggie I just noticed that might have slipped through the cracks...

Tiebreakers are GONE.

(quote)
Effective from 1 October 2017 ...
• There will be no tie-breaks and in competitions with more than one pool teams will be placed
into the play-off games based on their ranking (Rule C9)
(end quote)

So...the battle for 6th of 13 will now be completely determined by LSD.

The elimi ation of tiebreakers just doesn't make sense to me. They want more games to get more money but then that eliminate tiebreakers. Tiebreakers are needed .teams finishing n the same record should have to playoff to determine who goes through. I'll never think otherwise.

Even after having had time to digest this I still don't think having a 6 team playoff wth the top 2 getting byes is a good idea. Why should 6th place be good enough for the playoffs in a field of 13.the only thing that surprised me with this is that I thought they were trying to figure out how to speed the events up . The won't help

The 3th team idea and the five rock rule being introduced are the only changes I can get behind. I know on a lrger scale my opinion doesn't matter but...I'm just saying.

So many change going on right now in this sport I just don't like.

By expanding the playoffs to 6 teams from 4, they essentially eliminate the need for tiebreakers. The teams who are 5th and 6th are teams that would have been in potential tiebreakers.

The reason they wanted to get rid of the tiebreakers was the uncertainty of creating a schedule. Now they're guaranteed that one draw where the Quarterfinals are played instead of a possible tiebreaker. It makes scheduling easier from their perspective too.

So reading the proposals and amendments a little more closely I think Pacific Asia got an extra spot only for 2018 which makes 13 teams

For 2019 I think they have added a Qualification Event before the World's takes place

World Championships 13 Teams
2 - Americas
2 - Pacific Asia
8 - Europe
2 - Qualifiers from Qualification Event

Of course this is 14 teams, the catch is whichever zone had the last place team in the previous world's gets one less spot then mentioned above which gets us down to 13 teams

Qualification Event 8 Teams
1- Host
1 - Americas
2 - Pacific Asia
4 - Europe

I like this format a lot better than what we have now to be honest. Interesting that instead of just having one qualifier and no zone loses a spot they have two qualifiers and the last place finish costs their zone one automatic spot. So the upshot for the Americas is Brazil will not only get the Challenge Round but they will also get a chance to go to the Qualification Event. Any word on if Brazil is going to challenge Canada this year for the 2nd Men's spot ? (USA hosting so if Brazil challenges Gushue or somebody has to play them I guess.)
