What should the Mandate be for the next CEO of 'Curling Canada'?
in full agreement with 'cornerblitz', here's a new thread, with hopefully a constructive focus ...
Given the current state of the Canada's national curling organization --- what should be the primary goals for its next CEO? And let's contribute to the mandate, and not the person. The mandate should resolve whom the selection committee formed ultimately decides upon.
Here's my list of challenges for the next CEO:
1. Live audiences at major curling events are shrinking. This needs to be turned around.
2. While the eyeballs watching curling events is healthy, the sport's coverage in traditional media -- TV sports news, newspapers, magazines and on radio -- is problematic. For the sport to grow, it must be a part of everyday conversation. To become a part of water cooler dialogue, it needs to be in the news more, not less. And that still means in the traditional news sources more. New platforms (... ie., websites, Facebook, Twitter, web-streaming, etc.) generally target disciples, not the virgin masses curling and curling news needs to reach to garner new momentum.
3. While targeting Olympic Gold is great, it seems to nurture a focus on building an elite. How does curling encourage competition at other levels -- encourage competition for the pure love of the game.

I like where you are at with the above.
Can't disagree.
I think the mandate also has to find a way to not just expose the sport, but generate a legitimate interest in kids.
Curling will be in tough if it does not move on this soon.
There are so many options for kids and for parents to spend their dollars that it is cut throat out there to compete for kid's attention.
Enough catering to only the events and the elite.
That has been looked after in an amazing way by the current staffers. The CCA has gone from a joke in 2007 to likley the best amateur sports body in Canada today. OK, Hockey Canada and maybe soccer have a lot to brag about too.
But, it is a quick fall from here if they do not target kids and dump a lot of money into a progressive strategy for how to attract kids to the sport and make it slick.
I would add that to your list above, but otherwise like your ideas a lot.

Prairie dog gets it right. More than anyone on this or the Stemlaw thread.
Unfortunately, good luck changing what is now an entrenched culture of entitlement PD.
It would take a paradigm shift of universal size to get the coaching set up changed from the few to focusing on the many:juniors and new curlers. As well, imagine the hue and cry if say, team funding was reduced/eliminated and channelled into other areas needing that money?
Unfortunately the lust for Olympic gold, fuelled by the mistaken belief it attracts more curlers to be competitive (it doesn't. All its done is shrink the number of teams), has the people in power blinded to the real issues which need addressing.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with the statements made in the opening post. But unless a miracle happens nothing is going to change. Sorry to dampen your enthusiasm, I may be at heart an optimist but I'm also a realist.

And how do you propose the CEO turn around attendance? Any great suggestions? TV, cost and other alternatives have killed attendance and I don't think it will ever go back to the numbers from past years.
Die hard curlers will buy week passes but Curl Canada needs to continue to work on single tickets at a reasonable price.
Family tickets, senior tickets, student tickets all will add to the bottom line. Better to offer a seat at $10 than have that seat empty.
We are an aging population and the attraction of staying at home with our favourite brew in hand, watching it on Tv is sooooooo very attractive.
When it is cheaper to fly to Cuba or Mexico for a winter holiday than go cross country for a Brier- really is there any debate?

Attendance is a problem. Getting kids interested in the game is crucial.
Since money for the televised events primarily comes from the broadcasting rights, how about FREE admission to all kids and their parents?

I my view, CCA has to be of some benefit to the clubs. It needs to generate interest in curling via advertising and create a real grant program.
Second it needs to trim down staff. For what it does it's wage budget is ridiculous along with it's staffing numbers.
You need a real corporate manager, not some washed up PT major!

When Tim Hortons became the Brier's title sponsor, one of the concepts Bill Moir at Tims proposed was a Timbits curling program ... similar to what was done for hockey ... and since for soccer. But the then brains at the CCA nixed it. Tims foresaw and was wanting to fund (use part of their commitment) to launch it. New management today at Tims but the idea is still sound ... and it still fits Tims strategy of being attached to the essence of Canadian culture.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the CCA's decision was due to the Capital One Rocks and Rings program. However, that's dry land compared to an on-ice program. Still, it absolutely galls me that the CCA would nix an idea that's proven to be successful, is easily adaptable to curling and provides great promotion for the game.
My six year old daughter is currently part of a local Timbits soccer program and loves it. The idea is a perfect, natural fit for curling. I would hope the new CCA manager will revisit this and implement it. Unfortunately, given the strange decisions made in the past (hello? relegation anyone?) I doubt we'll see it.

Bill Moir's 'Timbits Curing' vision was long before Chad hatched R&R ... was when Tims was bidding for the rights against Nokia. The CCA's pass (... along with their pass on a Brier ticket sales drive utilizing Tim Hortons locations across Canada) was based on a 'we can do it better our own way' just give me cash thank you very much ... and Al Gilchrist's bid was a cash only one, albeit of lesser 'worth' than the valued Tims bid.
