Happy Birthday: Remarkable Jennifer Jones
The great lady of curling turns 44 today.
Her legacy is already sealed – with amazing results over a 20 year curling career.
Which really didn't start until she was nearly 30 (law school, management law position with investment company, etc.)
The great lady has spawned a major change in how women play the game – even juniors have taken to her aggressive strategy.
Now, at 44 no longer able to rack up the amazing high percentages she once routinely produced she's still a heckuva gamer – able to make the most out of lesser results – still winning cash spiels – still taking on all comers – still tossing caution to the wind – still throwing up the odd putrid/cold-as-ice game.
Now advancing into her 45th year with a major change (first in several years) in Jocelyn Peterman coming in for Jill Officer. But advancing with a Scott Tournament of Hearts pass in her pocket.
Whats to stop her from STOH #7? Well, for one a rejuvenated team of Ottawa Mean Girls – fully recovered from near-decimation last season. When R. Homan is on her game – even Jones cannot stop her. At 3rd the score is pretty much even – but Kaitlyn Lawes has shown a propensity to not match her counter-part at 3rd. 2Nd about even but slight edge to Homan cuz her 2nd is easily the most powerful woman in curling – a brutal brusher – and won't have the disadvantage of a long learning curve as Peterman will no doubt have with JJ.
Leads about equal. Dawn usually had slight percentage advantages but no longer – they're about equal. And equal too on the brushes.
Jones creates the odd trap for herself with over-aggressive strategy – which an active and efficient Homan will no doubt take advantage of.
Right now if they played a best of 10 series – Homan easily wins 6 and is borderline for a 7th.
So tough chore for Jones to lasso her 7th STOH gold – cuz Homan is out there and wants to grab her a 4th.
The real question for 2019 is whether there's anyone out there who can dislodge Jones or Homan?
I think not!
Happy Birthday Jennifer and her wonderful family.
So many amazing games, titles, cash and memories over the years. So great in mixing with curling fans around the world – although in recent years Jill & Lawes have taken much of that burden off her.
I'm one of the good guys now!
