2017 Players' Championship

Ok, so hot off the mens Worlds we have this big event right away starting tomorrow, biggest of the year, all the top teams are here for men and women, except for Ulsrud who decided not to play for some reason, so it will be Bottcher instead, should be good, can Gushue and Edin maintain their levels, or will another team sneak it out. On the women's side can Homan continue her dominance, or will Jones or someone else surprise and end the season on a high.

Here are the pools for the women:

Pool A

Flaxey
Homan
Scheidegger
Sigfridsson
Tirinzoni
Wang

Pool B

Englot
Fleury
Hasselborg
Jones
Muirhead
Sweeting

Men's pools:

Pool A

Bottcher
Carruthers
Gushue
Koe
McEwen
Morris

Pool B

De Cruz
Edin
Epping
Jacobs
Laycock
Smith

So women's pool A is certainly easier than pool B, pool B is stacked.

Men's pool A is stacked, pool B is easier.

I'll be back later with my picks and predictions.

No imbalance in the seeding, they're ranked based on their results this season.

Not sure if it has any bearing on seeding, but these teams got in based on March 13th rankings.

Very interesting team lineup change in case people did not know, top young player Matt Dunstone is no longer skipping as he has now joined Laycock's team and is playing 2nd.

..with the Champion's Cup being held April 25-30th, and the World Mixed Doubles April 22-29th, I wonder what Joanne Courtney and Reid Carruthers will do since both of their teams are in to the Champion's Cup, and they won the right together to rep Canada at the World Mixed.

Reid and Joanne are going to the World Mixed Doubles Championship. This has been confirmed. I have not heard who will sub in for them at the Champions cup.

I would like to learn how each of these teams were assigned

to their respective 'pools'. Also, when you state they are

ranked based on their results this season, exactly what

results are you referring to?

I believe Gerry is referring to the annual OOM ranking. So one pool would likely have teams ranked 1,4,5,8,9 and 12 and the other would be 2,3,6,7,10,11.

The smart money should be on Muirhead & Jones - although at this stage JJ is a massive enigma.

You did know it's the top 4 from each pool, not top 2 that makes the playoffs right, at least the 8 best results.

I hear that Rachel Homan at the Players' is Joanne Courtney. I'm surprised that she can play the Players' this week and the World Mixed Doubles Championship in 2 weeks.

Now for the Champions' Cup, I hear that they did call a second team all-star second at this year's Scotties to replace Courtney...

Be a good choice, she sure proved herself at the Scotties.

While Team Homan is set to be in full force here at the Player's Championship, when Joanne is off with Reid at the World Mixed, they just announced that former Canadian Mixed champ Sarah Wilkes of Alberta will be stepping in for the Humpty's Champions Cup. Not sure if she'll be the second for the week or filling the alternate role, but that's the official word on it.

Does anyone know if Tirinzoni is bringing a 4th to Toronto? They've been playing most of their tournaments with only 3 since Manuela Siegriest went down with a knee injury in January. It got them to the final at the City of Perth, but they couldn't get by Team Flaxey at that one. That said to me it seems like Flaxey and Carruthers, the teams that would most likely have been in the mix had next year's Scotties/Brier structure been in place, are the ones that have the most to show here in Toronto.

And if Jones is an enigma, what about Sidorova. Last year, it was her and Ben Hebert that seemed to be ubiquitous on the posters, now it's Lawes and Nichols. After she gets that silver at World's the best they could pull last week at the Russian championships was a bronze. Meanwhile Team Moiseeva was split onto three different teams for that event and took the gold, silver, and 4th slots. I would have liked to see some Russian women at this event, thanks to their European victory at least Moiseeva will bring their brand of fun on ice to Humpty's.

A bit surprising a top team like Tirinzoni still has not brought someone on to fill in.

Let me get this straight, the Russians had their nationals last week, AFTER the Worlds?

Hardly the 'biggest event of the year'... Despite some top teams being there, it's really mainly a made-for-tv event. After the World Championships, this is definitely an anti-climax.
It's overkill. Really, the season should rightfully end with the World Championships.

Yeah the Russian Women's Championships were last week, after the Worlds. They determined the team to play the Worlds in a 2 team, best of 7 showdown in a hangar with no audience that they called the SuperCup. The top 2 men's teams were on adjacent ice for that, though it seems they took the skip of the loser as their alternate to Edmonton, but given their showing they could have taken anyone and not done worse.

Originally the plan was just for one of these SuperCups at the beginning of the season, but when Sidorova lost in September to Moiseeva, they scheduled a second one to happen before Worlds. They might not have done that if they realized Moiseeva was gonna win Europeans, but the decision was made before that was played. This Championship was a bit different though as they broke teams by their home clubs rather than national teams. For Sidorova representing Moscow, that merely meant they lost their alternate Alina Kovaleva for the tournament as she skipped Adamant 1 out of St Petersburg. Team Moiseeva was broken across 3 teams for the tournament, Moiseeva skipped Adamant 2, while her vice Vasileva played second for Kovaleva. The other 3 team members (Arsenkina, Guzieva, Portunova) joined up with Olga Zharkova representing Krasnodar. The final wound up with Zharkova beating Kovaleva 5-3, and Sidorova taking Moiseeva in the bronze game. Russian Curling had good feeds on youtube for some of these games, but you really need YouTube to do an autotranslate on the chat to decipher much of it...

Cathy O. has been listed as their 3rd for quite a few days now, but of course, you wouldn't know that.

The Players' has never been Homan's favorite event. In 6

attempts she has lost the QF's 3 times, the SF's once and

the finals twice. Close but no cigar.

By comparison, Muirhead has won it 3 times, Jones 4. These

two just can't wait to come to Toronto and pick up more

gold booty! Serious gold diggers for sure.

Despite this background, I'm predicting Homan will finally

win this extremely competitive* event after facing off

with either Scheidegger ( bet that got your attention ) or

Tz. in the finals.

* No doubt in my mind, each of the Grand Slam Majors is

considerably more difficult to win than either the Canadian

Scotties, or the Worlds, or the Olympics.

I'll agree after the World's it is anti-climatic. However almost all (not some) of the top teams are in Toronto. Instead of watching Homan and Gushue smash through a bunch of non-elite teams in matches that were mostly over early because of a huge disparity in talent, the Player's will have way better curling on display...just not as much drama. I for one am happy with the Player's and the Champion's Cup being on the schedule. Like dessert after the main course.

Thanks to the Ryerson Varsity Curling Teams for once again volunteering to share the non-televised games from the Player's. Coverage starts tonight at 7pm eastern, and we should have 4 or 5 sheets being shared.

TSN Coverage

Perhaps this has been mentioned, I did not read through the whole thread.

Last night I was checking the times on TSN coverage, that was starting Thursday on TSN.

Since I can't remember what I did 5 minutes ago, I just looked again now, and see no coverage at all.

Am I missing something?
