Boston Pizza Cup 2019

Seems like a weird/stupid idea to me to have the provincials on club ice rather than arena ice, which is what the Brier is played on:

Lots of demand for arena ice, perhaps there was none available or it was too expensive.

But surprised they didn't book it last season...

Also a horrible name for Provincial Playdowns - 'Boston Pizza Cup'???
And a bad title for a thread - how many people will know that this is supposed to be the thread about the Alberta Playdowns/Tankard?

Many people will think the 'Boston Pizza Cup' is yet another bad 'made for TV' idea.

In any case... both Bottcher and Koe lost on Thursday.

It is lucky they have a three leg system in AB. In MB - Koe'd be waving bye bye and fighting for the play-in for the Brier. Feint Hope Clause exists in AB. Same team is doing the toppling - Team Vavrek. I do not recognize these curlers and none are named Vavrek. They must have an interesting story, and they are good curlers!
EDIT: Vavrek is not curling. Third Lautner stepped into the house and there has been a mixup - Lizmore at lead. New formula is working. Link a sports journalist's story if you find one. Interesting.

Regarding the Vavrek team, to the best of my knowledge they are playing with their regular lineup. I think there's been a slight mixup in the CurlingZone web site with respect to the players they are showing.

Regardless, this team did make it to the Alberta men's semi final last year and there is junior national and world championship experience on the team so they aren't quite coming from out of nowhere.

I'm a stupid American and I know the Boston Pizza Cup is Alberta's Tankard.

Thanks! They curl out of Sexsmith, which is north of Grand Prairie, and here is a link to their team profile on the event website. I will follow these up'n comers. https://www.2019bostonpizzacup.com/teams

Both Koe and Bottcher immo are sand-bagging a bit, trying to fortify their A-game and get ready for Sunday finals.

Don't get ahead of yourself boys. There's young guns comin' for you.

The nightmare scenario for Brendo Bottcher is both he and Koe get bounced in Alberta - and Bottcher can't make up the points spread on Mr. Epping to qualify for the Brier play-in.

Sandbaggers prediction - both Koe & Bottcher will lurk Sunday.

If Koe can't make Brier, I suspect B.J. Neufeld will be issued a 1-way bus ticket back to Manitoba!

Koe needs five wins now with no losses to make it through. A tough task, but not impossible for this team although they are probably not in a good mood because the event is being played in a curling club, not an arena. I don't think any team against any level of competition would feel good about needing five consecutive wins.

Bottcher lost to a different team than the "10 yr olds" that beat Koe. Appleman lost the provincial final in Alberta a mere two years ago.

BJ is not the weak link on this current Koe squad....

Get rid of Team Canada, get rid of the wild card. You want to play in the Brier, you need to get out of your Province or move North...

But if they don't make Brier - and even if they do and falter vs. the other monsters I don't see BJ staying with the program.
BJ might still be carrying the stench of playing with McEwen for so long and batting their heads against the wall - first in trying to get out of Manitoba - then after breaking thru - failing to capture a Brier.

It's their first year together - relax. Although they have struggled here, they have qualified for other events and may be going through a growing pains, so to speak, but I see loads of potential for this team. They are humans first and foremost, crap sometimes happens.

koe

Way too soon to count them out here. Even if they lose here they have the second chance at the wild card game.

Vavreks father, Mike , May be the best curler in Alberta to not have won a provincial title.

Tight game for Koe, corrected as it looked as though the scoreboard was switched. Still in contention.

I must say I like the triple knockout. Every game counts, no meaningless games at the end.

Appleman won A side as well as 1-2 in page playoff. Normally that team will win final.

The only way Koe doesn't play in the wild card game is if he wins Provs. If Bottcher loses he has has to hope Appelman doesn't win.

All for a new team, non subsidized pro team. LOVE when the underdog comes through. Yes, not over yet but at least somebody who wasn't expecting to, is headed for the wild card.

Anyone else just see the illegal sweep by hebert? Swept the bejesus out of the rock waaaaayy before it crossed tline. Koe's last in 8 barely nicked appleman rock ABOVE the tline and he jumped on it like it was the last scoop of mashed at the buffet. Appleman should have thrown the hip into him. Vote him most sportsmanlike player. Not his first sweeping incident. Ask Richard Hart.

Congrats to Team Koe! Also great sowing by Appelman. Great day of following Curling with a few favorites puling through (Koe, Macruthers, Jamie Koe) and a sort of upset (though I was rooting for him) in Kirk Muyres.

you know..this is just disappointing. for me anyway. i was really hoping for appelman and lyburn. i dont know,im just tired of watching the same people all the time at the brier. its fun to watch new people break through and accomplish their dream. plus its nice to see new faces on the biggest stage

its no knock against mcewen or koe, they deserved to win .

at the same time this backdoor wild card game is bull****. i will never like it. if you're going to have it there needs to be some kind oif requirement. like you need to make the final.

i just will never understand anyway why someone like bottcher deserves a 2nd shot at getting to hte brier over someone like lyburn or appelman. this game is already giving enough benefits and advantages to top teams and here's another one
