So...it's Shuster and Roth

Shuster hangs on by a toenail, Roth didn't win by much more than that either...

So, Team USA is set.

I don't mind our chances.

Good finals but I think better team won the Olympic berth on both sides

I think the two US reps are the most consistent teams this year, with the runners up not far behind.

Sinclair results vs Roth were W-L-W-L-W-L. Obviously Roth results were L-W-L-W-L-W. Format needs to change

How would a format change help? These are two closely matched teams, both playing well. We can only send one team. One has to win no matter what the format. Either team would represent the USA well in the Olympics. Interestingly, winning teams had a slightly higher OOM ranking, for what it's worth.

Although the competition format used to select our US representatives has somewhat of a Groundhog day feel, it does have the advantage of having the top teams play each other multiple times to get a better statistical representation of relative team strength. The chances of a significantly weaker team emerging as the US representative is very unlikely in what was effectively a 6-game match. Unfortunately for Sinclair's team, the last three games were more important than first three. Perhaps better this than a Page Playoff or a single-elimination knockout playoff format, where a significantly weaker team has a much better chance of beating the odds.

When there are only 3 teams deemed capable of playing, there is no good format. The real issue is not so much the format as that fact that USCA has not been able to develop enough good teams. It only makes sense that the format comes down to a championship game, which is why round robin does not work. With a decent field of teams, Page playoff works because it produces a championship game and it ensures that good teams meet in that game. At least this format sent team that won the event rather than sending a team that accumulated the most points over the past year. Bottom line is that USCA needs to develop more teams, and putting artificial limits on junior teams is not going to do that. [Sorry that i may have veered a bit off topic here]

Yeah. Looking at WCT for the season for the top events played, Shuster had more wins against top teams (Howard, Morozumi, Epping, Ulsrud). The only event McCormick won was with a (relatively) weak American field (St. Paul Cash Spiel). Matches against higher ranked teams were losses, so I would have worried how McCormick would have faired against international competition at the Olympics. Granted, the counter argument is look how Shuster did the last two Olympics. But, on paper, it looks like he's the better team.

On the ladies side, I would have been ok with either team going, although it seemed that Roth's team was on the upswing recently, especially with the win at the Canad Inns Women's Classic, and beating some noteworthy teams. Sinclair at the same event didn't beat any of the "high level" teams at that event. Sinclair did win the Shorty Jenkin's Classic, but really the only team of note she beat was McCarville, and it was back in September. Roth probably had the slightly better edge lately.

You've again hit on the important long term issue, which is developing a deep bench for the future. I think the two US reps are among our best if not the currently strongest teams, but the limits on access to high level coaching and competition will hamper future competitiveness in a nation with more curlers than any other but Canada.
