About Rachael

This is a nice story. Noticed it on twitter and wanted to share.

Right after today's Team Canada playoff loss we were standing around in the HeartStop Lounge at Mosaic Place when we spotted a young girl on the verge of tears. Canada's alternate Cheryl Kreviazuk approached the girl holding a sign she'd made for Team Canada and had wanted to give it to Rachel Homan. She was visibly upset from the loss and not being able to meet Rachel so Cheryl called Rachel who delayed some downtime with her family and Rachel told her to meet her in a behind-the-scenes area of the arena. Cheryl took the girl and her mother to meet her idol. We were just about to leave the arena when we spotted the young girl walking back in and she was now in tears and my heart sank a little, thinking they hadn't been able to connect. But I saw her mother now holding a signed Homan jersey. She had given Rach her "Let's Go Canada" sign she had wanted her to have and in exchange Rachel gave her one of her signed jerseys and chatted with her. She lives here in Moose Jaw and is a huge fan. Her mom said she burst into tears of excitement from the meeting and wore the jersey around the Lounge all afternoon. As disappointing as today's outcome was it was probably one of the most exciting days for one girl. Kudos to the ladies. I am fortunate to get a second row seat to some of the demands they are under and it isn't easy, especially after a loss, but they all handle themselves so well and I'm extremely proud of them.

Wonderful gesture from "mean girl" # 1. It says a lot about what great sports they are and I'm sure it's not easy to come to something like this with a target on your back. At 25 yrs of age, Rachael et al. have many many more years ahead of them to win everything on the planet. I'm also a huge fan, and I hope I'm around a while longer to see their future successes.

yes thanks with sharing this heart felt story with the rest of us, because it surely would of gone missing .... Rachael is no doubt a 'cut above ' the rest even at her tender young. age builds character and then same, she need not hang her head for what she has accomplished this curling season for her team and her Province .....hats off

That is such a sweet story! Great of Cheryl and Rachel to do that for a fan especially after such a tough loss. That little girl will never forget that act of kindness. It's always great when athletes take a little time out of their lives to make a fan's day like that. I've always been a big Team Homan fan and I'm even more proud to be one after reading this.

So great to see them relaxed and enjoying bronze medal game. I bet Richard told them to relax and have fun. Nice if it happened more often.

Good grief. When is the statue going to be erected to honour Rachel? Why are Rachel's fans so desperate to try to make people like her?

While Rachel may come off a cold and standoffish on the ice and interviews, I have seen personally on numerous occasions where she gives up her time for the fans of the game. She's genuinely interested in ensuring the fans get a great experience and handles that part of the game very well.

Virtually all of the curlers are great with fans and spend a lot of time talking to them and signing autographs and whatnot. Why do Rachel's fans feel the need to make a big deal out of it? It's part of the job of being an elite curler and selling the game and Rachel's not a special snowflake because she has finally grown up a bit and has for the most part stopped being a petulant brat.

That's great that all virtually all curlers spend time with their fans. It should be commended. This one special moment that Rachel shared with one of her fans in no way takes away from the other positive moments shared by other curlers and their fans.

That's the best part of positive news and is a nice treat compared to the usual negativity that can be contagious on the internet.

Well I'm not a Homan fan....but this was a great thing to do and her kindness should be acknowledged. We see these people in their game face, same for Jen Jones and people make up false impressions based on no evidence other than a look.

Jen is a great person as well....so I expect are many of the best...good to see Homan fits the crowd. Kodo's to her.

Maybe this will be a seminole moment for Rachel, in that, she might alter her attitude while on the ice and mic'd up. She's a huge talent---no question there. I'd like to share a related story. Last year in Toronto I took my son to see Jennifer play as he's a huge fan. JJ lost the game and I was reluctant to ask for a picture with my son--as it eliminated her and it was seconds after the final shot. JJ didn't flinch, she asked what my son's name was--put her arm around him and say hi. I snapped a quick picture and thanked her. She's obviously going to make a terrific mother!
