Clarification:

Kris wore Pink because that is the new tradition for the Friday Night Oaks during Derby Week. Her surgery had nothing to with wearing pink. She is recovering well under my slip-shot nursing.

We will not be going out for The Derby. Probably over to my mother's house or staying home. Something more relaxing as Kris gets back to normal. Getting back to normal is important because she spoils me something terrible.

Kris has a very stylish hat to wear while watching The Derby on TV. I hope it's a lucky hat. All women should have a stylish hat for Derby Day...even if they don't like the races.

For our Canadian friends:

Java's War and Golden Soul are owned by a Canadian. He lives in BC and owns a huge diamond mine. I believe his name is Charles Fiske or something like that. His stable rides with the jockeys' silks in white/yellow sleeves/blue diamond on the back with the initials CF.

Alas, GoldenSoul is so slow that I think Brady Clark could beat him in a fairly short race. Bred to run all day and all night, however. The race does not always to the fastest.

For any Scots snooping in the USA threads, Vyjack's mother is from there. Alas, Vyjack got easily distracted by the scent of the fillies...so they had to make him a gelding. I think that comes from his Scottish side. True story. From the time he turned 2, he couldn't be ridden nor handled if their was a filly close by. Typical Scot.

Ben Tucker
Java'sWar? Maybe.

The owner's name is Fipke. There is a good article about him in today's Globe and Mail.

Rain will change the game. Borel has 2 of his 3 wins on a wet track. Revolutionary does not mind the slop. Here is your three horse mudder exacta box - Revolutionary, Palace Malice and Vyjack.

The Tuck, Willy, JH special - Palace Malice, Orb, Vyjack

I will be keying Orb, Revolutionary and Goldencents in exactas and trifectas.

Pletcher and Mike Smith won the Oaks and will be looking for the double with Palace Malice, that would make Tuck happy.

JH
time to go watch some early coverage and maybe the weather channel before heading to OTB

Da Derby

Only one Rider in the field batting .300, 10 starts 3 wins nobody else is close. That either makes Castellano a genius, or Borel luckiest guy in the world. Castellano's a great jock and took Normandy Invasion over Revolutionary for a reason. These two could finish 1-2. Throw in Orb, Goldencents and Java's War. For your 5 horse box. But who's gonna win? He was left at the gate in the blue grass, gave the field 5 lengths before he left. He will love the distance and will be coming late. He has speed to his inside which should get him out of the gate quicker, there is nothing more thrilling than a last to first Winner. Its Java's War at a big number. Make no mistake this is one of the best betting Derby's ever, you can make a case for 10 or 12 of these. Enjoy, and remember bet with your head not over it, Bet your birthday and don't listen to Tuck, Palace Malice? Really? LOL

derby day

My boy Julien Leparoux, starts derby day with a 13-1, 110 dollor double. Wheeled the 3 in first race, but still collected 550 for 70. Let me see who's Leparoux on in da derby. Speed may be holding, watch out... JH who's the real speed..

I bet the Willy, Tuck, JH exacta box. So, Java Man for the win and Palace Malice for 2nd should more than get me to break even. Would be my only winning ticket however.

JH
bets are made, rain or sun, hopefully got it covered

The real speed will come from Falling Sky, who's father (Lion Heart) supplied the speed in the Derby years ago. He held the lead on a sloppy track until the last four jumps and finished second.

Varrizano, Goldencents and Oxbow will try to go with him.

Palace Malice, whom Willy laughed at, is the son of Curlin...who loved the slop.

If I hit the Superfecta, I am going to crash Peskoff's summer curling party.

Crap. That was fun, but...crap.

My theory was good. Putting two horses that I thought would hit the board (Orb and Revolutionary) with three longshots into a box was a great plan. I just picked the wrong three longshots.

Golden Soul? I guess these top three will bring back closer looks at bloodlines. All three are beautifully bred for distance. Golden Soul, slow as he is, could be a major player in the Belmont Stakes mile and a half.

I begged JHcurl to pick Orb. Begged him.

This is the second Derby that Mike Smith rode like a teenager and cost me money. Willy has defended him in the past. This race was so stupid that even Willy will have to admit a choke job. I have no problem with him taking Palace Malice to the lead on the slop...but those opening fractions blew PM out. Choke. Amateurish. Stupid. I suspect we will see this horse again in the Belmont. I hope we will see a different jockey.

I had Orb on a boatload of tickets. Also had the 3rd, 4th and 5th horses. The effing Canadians effed me again with Golden Soul getting 2nd. If someone had hit that horse with a crowbar would have had multiple extactors and trifectors (Canadian terms). As in most cases when betting on the ponies.....woulda, shoulda, coulda.

On the "plus" side, I did tell you Orb would win (not that I cashed a ticket) and also picked the last place horse (Falling Sky) which at least got me a beer from a few friends.

Oh well, will have to see how the Preakness shakes out.

JH
I told you Orb was gonna win, did you box him with the field? Yah, me neither.

Orb, at 2:02 and change over a sloppy track, must now be considered a seriously good horse. Greatness, however, must be a term reserved for the Churchill Downs track crew. They kept a lot of horses safe and sound on a crappy day. Truly a wonderful accomplishment.
