Grand Slam Cd'n Beef Masters

The second event and first major of the 2018-19 Pinty's Grand Slam of Curling begins on October 23rd.

Fifteen men's and women's teams have been invited based on the World Curling Tour's Order of Merit. Of the top fifteen men's teams DeCruz, Bottcher and Ulsrud declined to participate. In the women's division Sidorova, ranked 15th, also declined

Through a sponsor's exemption Jamie Murphy and Kaitlyn Jones (no relation) were also invited.

The men's and women's divisions have been split into three separate pools each of which will have five teams. Following a round-robin within each of these pools, eight will advance in each division to the QF's. As with all Pinty's Grand Slam events, the five-rock rule will be in effect; counting to five (5) is not expected to become problematic.

Sportsnet, Sportsnet 360 and the CBC will cover it beginning October 25th.

Counting never a problem, ambiguous rules provided when not a conventional curling game can be a problem.

I’ve been watching GSOC events for a few years now, and I can’t recall them having any coverage, either online or on TV, of the Tuesday and Wednesday draws. Video coverage always seems to begin only on the Thursday.

WTG Casey, Chelsey, and Darcy. All three with challenging first opponents and chalked up the doubleewe. Scheidegger is an advancing force of the future. Carey has intermittent forceful power. Robertson has sage adaptability. It takes all kinds.

Good on Scheidegger. Absolutely nothing better than beating the world's number 1 ranked team right out of the gate!

So that junior team from Nova Scotia that got in on the sponsor’s exemption, Team Kaitlyn Jones....they’re 2-0 and took out Silvana Tirinzoni and scored three in the final end vs. the all-skips Kerri Einarson team. Huh!

Would you want to have to play them now? 😀

Having gifted a sponsor's exemption to Kaitlyn Jones, wouldn't ya think the officials who established the draw schedule might have at least attempted to place her in a reasonably competitive and balanced draw?

Yes? Well think again.

Actually she was assigned to the "shark pool" with Homan (OOM 3), Einarson ( OOM 4 ), Tirinzone ( OOM 5 ) and Fleury ( OOM 6 ). Clearly, they could not have made things any more difficult even if they had to.

So why in the world didn't they throw her into JJ's "goldfish pool" instead where the level of competition is significantly weaker?

While nobody expects her to win this thing, this draw schedule is anything but fair and balanced in my opinion.
It is not unlike the draw schedule in the Autumn Gold Classic earlier this month. Seems to me something is horribly wrong when officials habitually and consistently make it difficult for some teams but provide a relatively easy path for others to reach the playoffs.

i really would like to know if there's a formula for how the draws for events are made. at times it honestly seems like someone just sits there and picks names out of a hat and thats how they decide who goes in what group.

and the conspiracy theorist in me does think that, at times the host teams are given easier draws

Maybe, this is just a thought, but looks like pool A might be a bit less traumatic. Although, a couple of the rinks in pool A have given some really good games. I wonder what procedure is followed when these pools are set up. Hmmm. Just wonderin.

There should be a preset draw based on CTRS/OOM standings 2 weeks MAX prior to an event. I've said it before and I'll say it again, too many times the draw is left up to "LOCAL" interpretation as they see it. Or worse, lack of knowledge of how it affects the teams, or lack of care. Make it so that ALL events earning points must follow the exact same draw parameters. Simple. Easy. Fair for all. Seems so, but we'll see.

I'm enjoying the instagram feed coverage for this event! They show lots of good shots and interesting candid shots, like suddenly, to my surprise, Team Jennifer Jones has a coach! Wow! Victor Kjall! Who knew? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Kj%C3%A4ll

She just showed the rest of the curling world how NOT to play UP 4 WITH 2 ENDS TO PLAY. Why would you put rocks in play WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE TO SCORE. 5 rock rule schmozzled.
And then to purposely take 3 extra breaks on the last rock thrown so EVERYONE is watching...... and you missed. Memories of the Scotties in Charlottetown when she raised her arms in the air after the big last shot vs Holland from SK thinking she made it after waiting for ALL the cameras to be on her..... and she lost. Fitting.

Back from China yada yada yada. You're good, but there's 10-15 teams that WILL beat you on a regular basis.

Go Homan. Go young Jones.

Too soon? No.

In their prime several years ago, Savill and Laing were arguably the best front end in curling.

Difficult not to notice this season to date their percentages are still among the very best in the world.

Looking forward to Homan and Hasselbourg at 5:00 pm. Not sure about the Koe and Epping game. It starts at 1:00 pm. Wonder if it'll be over by 5:00pm. Indecision is Koe's biggest problem. Sometimes it works, on occassion it doesn't. Hoping Homan/Epping are the winners of this spiel.

That’s a game that in my opinion, Hasselborg did not win , but rather Homan lost it.

Nope Hasselborg won it by making her shots when she needed to. The chance was there and she made them. Just as the chance was there for Homan and she missed.

That his how you win in any sport, by making what you need to.

Congrats Hasselbor for winning!

On a different note, anyone finding this site annoyingly slow?

Exciting game for sure! No doubt the 2 strongest women’s teams right now. Hasselborg entire team has a great demeanour. If they were Canadian they would be the most marketable curlers ever. Very likeable.

Also enjoyed Epping winning another.

If I were part of the winning team yesterday and some witless person suggested that we didn't actually win the championship, the other team lost it, I'd tell that dolt to Take One In The Hat,

You need to hit the reset button, fella.

Draws in most events are seeded off the Order of Merit. What you are seeing though is the changes that happen between when a draw is created and posted to the time the event runs.

With some teams playing well early and others struggling, it does shake up the rankings pretty quickly too.

Nothing nefarious in either the Masters or Autumn Gold seeding.
